Timbuktu smells formal to me. I do wear it with jeans, but I always feel like I'm getting away with something.

Pleasures or La Nuit. Inexpensive and do just that.

For me there are two types of formal - business formal and pleasure formal.

Business formal is cerebral, cold, subtle, clean, serious. I think fresh, woody, green, soapy, metallic, mineralic notes. Bvlgari PH, Platinum Egoiste, Grey Vetiver, for example.

Pleasure formal is mysterious, rich, smart, complex, seductive. I think woody, spicy, oriental, mossy, smokey notes. Sycomore, Chanel PH, PdN New York, for example.

Probably my signature - Encre Noir on the bottom, Tom Ford Grey Vetiver on the top. When I layer the two, I seem to have a circle of people wanting to talk with me.

Formal...that doesn't describe me very well. But when I want to be noticed in a good way and in formal environments I tend to Guerlain Heritage, and Dunhil for men. They remind me of hugging my grandfather when I was a kid, or those gentlemen who wear suits to work.

rive gauche for me, it screams out confidence and says listen to me because I know what i'm talking about. Its the scent of a leader

Though I have never used them in a formal setting, Egoiste and Pour Monsieur both strike me as very formal fragrances.

Boucheron Pour Homme for me as well. Same bottle for a few years now and it's still as good as day one.

+1 on Chergui. Bought it with the intent on wearing regularly through fall/winter. After a couple of wears, definitely get the feel that this is a pressed shirt, silk tie scent.

On the other hand, Creed Millesime Imperial is currently my favourite formal scent to wear casual. Sort of like 'dressing up' when you are dressing down.

I would have to say the most "formal" ones I have are:

    Chanel Antaeus
    Chanel Pour Monsieur Concentree
    Puredistance M
    Polo Double Black

I would even say Creed Aventus would fit in nicely. It fits in nicely in any situation I think.
    Current Summer Favorites:

    1. Creed - Original Cologne
    2. Xerjoff - Nio
    3. Creed - Aventus
    4. The Different Company - De Bachmakov
    5. Dior - Homme Sport 2008
    6. Tom Ford - Grey Vetiver
    7. Montale - Aoud Legacy
    8. Dior - Homme Sport 2012
    9. Tom Ford - Rive d'Ambre
    10. Creed - Virgin Island Water

    AdP Colonia Intensa
    Grey Vetiver
    Rive Gauche
    Tuscan Leather
    Brooks Brothers NY Gentleman
    Ralph Lauren Purple Label

....and that's my 500th post on Basenotes!
