What qualifies a scent as formal? Does it have to be not-erotic? In that case I would exclude cuir de russie although it iw one of the classiest smelling scents I know. Does it have to smell distanced? How does that smell like? Or intimidating? Maybe with lots of sillage as a sign of confidence and dominance? Curious about your thoughts.

I really cant qualify any scents as formal. Maybe because I never go to any formal events.

I like PWJ's split to business formal (where I would pick either Mark Birley or Amouage Epic Man) and non-business formal (YSL Rive Gauche PH Light and Amouage Jubilation XXV). Awesome thread ...

I don't own too many formal scents, but I think these qualify somewhat...

Heritage--I love it at all times but I tend to wear it to formal events and weddings, funierals, state events. Perfect always and always perfect.

I have to agree. I don't feel right wearing Heritage to anything less than a once in a lifetime event. It's far too adorned to be a scent of the day, I find. It is fantastic, though. I can't wait to wear it once the weather gets colder!

Dicontinued years ago, lucky to still have two bottles left.

The Dreamer from Versace: what does this scent have that is so alluring and enticing towards the opposite sex ?

Guerlain Vetiver. I think a minty fresh vetiver is utterly formal without being somber.
