Nino Cerruti 1881 (1990) Martin Gras Aromatic Oriental
•Top Notes: Bergamot, Lemon, Clove, Basil, Tarragon, Cypress, Rosemary, Lavender, Juniper Berry •Middle Notes: Ylang-Ylang, Rose, Blackcurrant •Base Notes: Sandalwood, Wood Musk, Balsam Fir, Amber
A top note accord of citrus with green and aromatic notes yields to a floral-fruity heart undergirded by woody oriental notes. This is one I had nearly forgotten, but wanted to revisit after reading Luca Turin's review in "Perfumes: The Guide." I confess that I thought the top notes a bit harsh, but now I see that they lead to a beautiful masculine floriental with delicate resonances that are well worth wearing for their subtle radiance.

Have I told you about the scent of jasmine? Have I spoken about the smell of the sea? The earth is scented. And I perfume myself to enhance what I am. That's why I can not wear a perfume that bothers me. Perfuming is an instinctive wisdom. And like all art, it requires some knowledge of yourself..."

Yesterday's SotE: Empress of India by Essentially Me.
Top: orris, rose otto, neroli, green mandarin, bergamot, coriander
Middle: rose absolute, jasmine, orange blossom, tuberose
Base: opoponax, vanilla, tonka, sandalwood, frankinscense, musk
I was doing other things than paying full attention to the scent last night, but my first impression is that this is pretty feminine. The top and middle are mostly floral, with only a very small amount of citrus/spice at the top, and a rather femme floral, at that. The base moves into what is mostly sandalwood, and not very sweet, either. I'll have to pay more attention next time.
SotD: Thu by Sigilli.
Top: lavender, anise
Middle: sage, ferula
Base: lavender, ferula, musk
Gerald wrote that "Thus is focused on anise...", but I find this to be much more centered on the sage, very herbal/green, and not very sweet. It is the Pyrgos from Sigilli that is the anise monster.

I'm still trying to figure out if I like this or not. There is a certain accord in this, that annoys me...a metallic, aluminum-foil-floral sort of smell that I can't seem to place. It gives the scent a velvety texture that I'm sure is pleasing to certain noses but to mine I wish it would fade. I will most likely test this again in the winter cold weather, to see if it wears differently.
