With the exception of Muscs Koublai Khan, all of the Lutens frags smell basically the same to me - warm, smooth, and boring, with pointless spicy notes that go nowhere.

Granted, I haven't smelled all of their line (I've tried probably 8 of them), but every time I try a new one, my opinion has stayed the same. Yawn...

P.S. I'm not trying to turn this into a "most overrated.." thread. I say Lutens is the most disappointing because of all the hype they get and the high prices they charge.
I also have been let down by sl, but i am trying to give them a second chance lol.

Comparing to their notorious history and contribution to the fragrance industry, Jean Patou and Lanvin are disappointing fragrance houses!

Is a lot of this hate for RL due to the overall suckiness of the Big Pony line? I enjoy Polo Blue despite it being a relatively generic.
It is a nicely constructed and versatile summer fragrance that gets slightly above average longevity, I can get about 6 hours out of it. I enjoy Double Black, but haven't gotten around to finding a good sample of it to really get a sense of if I want to buy it. I was really unimpressed with Black and Explorer and haven't tried the Romances or Purple Label. But I suspect a good deal of the hate is coming from the recent line of Big Pony crap.

Sorry, but I can't stand anything from Cartier. Bond #9 is another of my least favorites although I do really like Chinatown.

I don't think I've ever been "disappointed" yet because I don't ever really expect much. Having said that, quite a few Creeds left me unimpressed. Bond no.9 as well, but I was already familiar with their reputation so I wasn't surprised that I didn't enjoy a good portion of them.

    Yves Saint Laurent

The classic YSL scents are everybody's darling on basenotes. They are well crafted, strong and have very good staying power - but to me they are also coarse, offensive, old-but-not-in-a-good-way, lacking refinement - they are, in one word, graceless. I can see why so many basenoters prefer them over the shallowness of Hugo Boss (and all the other generic cheap modern scents), but to me they were a complete disappointment when I sampled (and in one case bought) them with the high expectations I had because of the general appreciation they enjoy on basenotes. Different to most current run-of-the-mill scents? Yes. Better? No.

L'Artisan has some great concepts, but scents often lack depth and balance. It's a good house, but dissapointing, because it could be so much more. I dislike everything about Bond No. 9, but it's not really dissapointing. Expectations are very low, and some of their scents are actually quite good copies.

Oh, I totally agree! Lutens, definetely... only supassed by Xerkoff and Clive Christian.
    Awful contributions from main-stream houses:
Boss, Benetton, Gucci (with regard to their latest creations like "Flora" or "Guilty").

Really!?!? Maybe they should raise the price of all their fragrances to above $60/bottle.

Honorable mention is Kenneth Cole (for poor quality and abysmal longevity).

but I have to agree with those who are disappointed by Serge Lutens.

Every scent I try seems fussy and lacking in clarity.

I'm surprised at the YSL mention. Even though they have the occasional misfire (who doesn't?) one can ususally depend on them for something of quality and complexity. Although, they are starting to stray into the new release every six months/flanker territory. I guess that's just part of the business nowadays. And sadly, quality slips. But when they hit the ball? Le run du maison!

I'm shocked and impressed at the civility displayed in this thread. There isn't really any one house I'd choose as most disappointing, to be disappointed I'd need to have elevated expectations, and while there are houses that consistently put out poor scents, I wasn't expecting much more. Serge Lutens' haters are out of their mind though.
