    Default Blind Sniffs in 2011

Is there any interest in doing Blind Sniffs again starting in 2011?

Is the previous 3x3 format convenient?

Once a month -- around the 15th -- however long it might take, up to 7 days, with a break in July?

If you were to change anything, what would it be?

Please post your thoughts. For the new people, go to Advanced Search, type in my screen name and look for "Blind sniff" or "3x3".

(typed in, hit search, dove out) OMG, what fun!
I'd love to sniff. I am way too new to be able to contribute, but maybe some day down the road?.. (dove right in to finish reading)

Oh Wolfie, your Blind Sniffs are awesome - fun and dynamic and educational, and one of the things that I relished when I was just lurking way back when. By all means, please bring them back and count me in! Also, please let me know if I can contribute anything to the challenges, which I'm sure I'd be better at than the actual sniffing...although I'd love that too!

And Warum, don't be shy! Your nose works just as well as anyone else's, and even if you don't guess any of the actual notes correctly, it's always very enlightening to realize how others perceive certain notes and accords.

    Thank you.

You know what I enjoyed most? Besides sniffing and reading people's impressions? Working with Miss Tao and later DarkDreams as a team, when one springs in when another one is away/asleep. It was a gut feeling, choosing partners, and I think all our other people can attest to that. I can't recall any team that did not pull through. All fragrances have been successfully guessed, BTW.

Here is a list of fragrances that have been sniffed so far (last updated in June, 2011):

I tried being a guesser last year and it was ridiculously hard!

    But fun...

I'd be willing to be a "host" this year, though I fear that it may be next to impossible with the search by notes function on the fritz...

    Thank you, E.!

At the moment we have three sniffers (Warum, Evangeline and Twolf) and one hosting team (Rogalal and Haunani) or two independent hosts if they choose so, thus January and part of Februrary (?) is taken care of.

We need about 20-25 more people, both sniffing and hosting.

I may regret this (probably not) but I'll volunteer (to sniff anyway) ! (I love the idea, it will be interesting how our noses "get" the scents.)

For those interested in what is in there for me -- nothing much material, just a set of samples, like everyone else sniffing, friends and fun are the most important part. Not like I am doing it for a research or anything.

I would also like to host one of them sniffs down the line.

Twolf, I have PMed Rogalal about how he'd like to proceed. This will be fun! I encourage others to sign up as sniffers. I was nervous about it when I tried it, because I'm not experienced at identifying notes, but I had fun and learned a lot. I also enjoyed the process of playing with the clues and being a sleuth, both as a sniffer and unofficially as an observer.

Once again, thanks for your responses.

H., could not agree with you more: a playing observer part is the best -- you are sitting in front of your screen, putting two and two together, PMing the host your guesses -- and again, the more -- the better are your chances of naming a correct one! -- and having all the fun.

    More volunteers?

If it hasn't been set in stone, I'd rather do February while Haunani does January. It doesn't work that well for us to be pair, because we're both in the same time zone.

If you're a sniffer, please have your wardrobes updated. We can't be sending you things to guess that you already know!

Anyone in Europe or Asia want to be my backup?

I'm almost embarassed to admit it, but I've already been imagining themes for my 3 mystery samples...

Ooh... this means I have to inventory and check my wardrobe list! Maybe this is the excuse (scratch that... REASON) to get a scent cabinet to better arrange 'em! :grins:

But I think I have everything accounted for in my 'drobe, except for some samples and decants that I need to inventory. Even so, double-checking the 'drobe inventory list would make a fun autumn evening activity!

Rogalal, I'm thinking of themes for January. When I settle on one, I'll let you know – or you let me know if you decide first! That way we won't pick things too similar. This will be fun. Good advice for sniffers to update their 'drobes! :-)

    OK, here we go:

January 2011 -- Haunani -- Warum, Evangeline and actiasluna.

    February 2011 -- Rogalal -- Twolf, Nostalgie, DavidBond007.

March 2011 -- Twolf -- moondeva (UK), FrouFrou (Netherlands), hilaryjane (UK).

If there are other suggestions, please let us all know. Nostalgie is standing by for January if there are last minute cancellations and moondeva is standing by for February.

    Still need more sniffers.

Our good friend kbe has agreed to be my backup for January. As Twolf has suggested, all sniffers please update your wardrobes, especially your "Tested" lists! We will plan to begin the January round on about the 15th of the month, if that works for my sniffers.

Oh, well that's very generous of you Haunani, but my sniffing experience (as well as my sniffer!) is no match for Twolf's! Besides, you've got nothing to worry about - we're the ones in the hotseat! I've already accepted the fact that I'm going to utterly embarrass myself...really, I'm okay with it.

R., I can do in April, but somebody will have to host me for sure. "snort" Will you be willing and able to send the samples to the UK to moondeva then?

And I am not that brilliant of a player, I just spend a lot of time reading and posting. I am also fickle -- not so well-versed on men's scents, do not like many niche scents (to be a ***** a fragrance has to be either exceptional or affordable, or both!) and if I do not like something I put a wall behind me and a thing I do not like, to never look back. So, do not be intimidated.

I would love to be a sniffer -- I'm not even going to TRY to identify actual perfume names, but I'll contribute impressions.

I recently sniffed my daughter wearing something with a peppermint leaf opening and thought it was orange at first, so don't expect too much ...
This scent is great, but ... MORE KITTENS!

You ladies better believe it -- you are going to surprise us and yourselves, guaranteed! Just be open-minded and cry your heart out with as many words as possible. It has been noticed during the course of years -- the more you speak at all, the more are the chances that some of your guesses are correct, you know?

    Here is the latest:

January 2011 -- Haunani -- Warum, Evangeline and actiasluna.

February 2011 -- Rogalal -- Nostalgie, DavidBond007 and moondeva (UK).

March 2011 -- Twolf -- FrouFrou (Netherlands), hilaryjane (UK), Thalia.

April 2011 -- Evangeline -- debbborra, Twolf, claresauntie.

    May 2011 -- debbborra -- Kiliwia, ____________. ____________.

The first person in each group of sniffers will be sniffing the previous month's fragrances in case there are any cancellations.

Let's start talking about the January game! It turns out that I'm booked (hula classes) for the weekend of the 15th/16th, so I'm hoping that Actiasluna, Warum, and Evangeline are all available for at least part of the weekend of the 22nd/23rd. We could start on Friday the 21st, if that is mutually satisfactory. Kbe and Twolf, does that sound OK with you, too?

I will plan to ship the mystery decants in the first part of the month. I will PM the sniffers to confirm/obtain addresses.

Haunani, that weekend is fine for me. Projects are coming in and one is going to be wrapping up about then but we are on "short" (37.5 hr) weeks and don't work weekends so that should be perfect.

If I've more or less got it, I'll sign up to sniff. I'm not going to be great, but would LOVE the fun and education!! Lol (and the excuse to update my wardrobe here, since I got bored and stopped clicking).

Ohohoh, we would LOVE to have you here, claresauntie! April or May for you?

You are correct: as a sniffer, you and two other people will receive 3x1ml unlabelled vials with fragrances (niche, designer, mass-market -- but this is not a rule set in stone, we had three designer fragrances, we had all three niche scents, we also had three vintage scents from the same era they were produced when this gradation between Niche and Non-niche was non-existent) and you will sniff them and post your impressions. It does not matter how personal/subjective they are -- just write your heart out, please, as the more you say at all, the higher are the chances that some of your guesses are correct!

The rest of the readers will try to guess what IS the fragrance you are sniffing at the time and might post here on the board or contact the hosts in the PM about their own guesses giving you an opportunity to shine and come up with the name of the fragrances. There might be some unexpected twists and turns as well -- one time I was a sniffer we had a six question ONLY opportunity to guess a fragrance (in a bonus round) and, believe it or not, we --a sniffing team of three people! -- were able to do it with the help of everybody behind the screen. It is all up to the hosts, really: how difficult/popular the scents are and how verbous they are themselves while answering our questions.

    GoodEST luck!

There is a singular joy in the experience of receiving perfume by mail. It is one of life's great little pleasures - one that more should have the pleasure of knowing.

I remember one y'all did last Christmas - YouCanCallMeMo was a sniffer (where the heck did Mo go??) and they were taking stabs at what turned out to be Jungle L'Elephant. Mo insisted she was smelling cherries and nothing else - isn't that interesting? But actually, I think the culprit turned out to be the heliotrope! So ...see? Sound like a lot of fun, huh?!

Anyway, you should definitely join in claresauntie! It's exciting - I'm really looking forward to it!

Thank you Twolf, but I'm not advanced at all, so that's why taking this on is a little scary. But, you all make it sound so fun I'd like
    to try.

I am too! Is there a theme, like it was in the previous ones?

The mystery samples have been shipped to sniffers Evangeline, Warum, and Actiasluna. Would you all please let me know when you receive them? No sniffing, though, until Friday, January 21!!!

Kbe, you will also get a package with the samples and fragrance info.

I will start a new thread next week for the game, in which I will announce the theme and rules.

For hosting my round, I also need a partner. Are you in, darkdreams? Will you, please?
Just now I read this. Sure, I can offer whatever help I can, if it is still needed. Looking forward to the new Blind sniffs.

Yippeetee, DD, are you available in March as my backup for hosting? I am not that rough at all, not if you know me like you do and if we have done a few of them sniffs together. Will you be able and willing to sniff yourself in mid-May? If not, when?

I don't get scared easily, don't worry. I should be available in March, however, I cannot guarantee I will be at my computer all day, every day. If I spend the day in the library, my Internet access is limited. But we should be able to coordinate somehow. I would love to be a sniffer someday, but my life is getting close to becoming a little chaotic so...I don't want to make promisses I can not keep.
