    Default Suggestions as to leather

Hello all, I'm new to your forum, and am a keen observer and user of all manner of colognes.

I have recently been given a samples of Knize 10, Creed Old English Leather, Truefit and Hill Spanish Leather and Caron Blond du Tabac (which is a woman's scent). I rather like the Knize, and wold be interested in suggestions from the more experienced and aware of you out there for some leather-based colognes I might try,

    Thanks,

    Chris

Cuir de Russie by Chanel and Knize Ten by Knize, both excellent leathers. Also Bandit by Robert Piguet, Bel Ami by Hermes and 1740 by Histoires de Parfums, haven't tried the 1740 but I hear it's good.

Tuscan Leather. The only leather I've tried so far that doesn't smell like old-persons room. Not saying other leathers are bad, but not very wearable for me.

If you like Knize, Serge Lutens Cuir Mauresque is a good one to sample. It's coming to export soon, too.

    Welcome!

I would say my favourite leathers are (some echoed by other members):

Cuir Ottoman by Parfums d'Empire (jasmine and leather with iris)
Chanel Cuir de Russie (aldehyde floral with leather and civet)

    Subtle leather here:
Habit Rouge by Guerlain (leather and citrus with vanilla)
    Chanel No. 19 (green leather)
Maitre Parfumeur et Gantier Magnolia Pourpre (floral with leather and vanilla)
Creed Royal Delight (jasmine with vanilla and leather)
Histoires de Parfum 1740 Marquis de Sade (leather with patchouli)

The 1740 is not too common, but here is a link for more info: http://www.basenotes.net/threads/213...arquis-de-Sade)

I'll chime in with a few leathers in a variety of styles that might be worth exploring, starting with further endorsements of Chanel Cuir de Russie, Knize Ten, and Bandit. In addition, enjoy Parfum d'Habit, Cuir Pleine Fleur, Idole de Lubin, Eau d'Hermes, Déclaration, Oud Cuir d'Arabie, and Derby.

Another vote for Tom Ford Tuscan Leather, which is the most straight-up leather of any frag I've tried.

I also very much like Parfum d'Habit, Cuir de Russie, and Bandit. But they're all very much "leather plus something else".

    Many great suggestions already.

Try some Rien from Etat Libre d'Orange, and Aoud Leather from Montale. Great stuff!

    Some others I'd recommend are:

    Parfumerie Generale Cuir d'Iris
Estee Lauder's Azuree (honest, nothing feminine about this classic Chant creation, and it's very affordable.)

Wow. I'm amazed at the knowledge base here, as well the array of colognes I have yet to explore. The Oud Cuir d'Arabie and the Knize 10 Golden Edition are most compelling, among others.

Thanks very much to all who responded for your quick replies, and the trove of information provided. Before buying, I'll try and winnow down the choices based on description, since I live in a somewhat remote location that precludes casual visits to major department stores and parfumeriers. Are there preferred web-based sites used by the mesdames and messieurs of this forum to procure said olfactory requisites? I'll walk down the path used by the cognoscenti here, before rushing to buy from the most expensive e-tailer out there.

Again, I very much appreciate your input,

    Chris

And sample! I realize that you can't sample in the store, but there are online sites that provide samples by mail order. LuckyScent and Aedes have fairly inexpensive 1ml samples of much of what they carry; The Perfumed Court has more expensive samples (well, decants - they don't sell the bottles at all, just the samples/decants) of darn near anything. Samples do cost money, and it can be easy to rack up the price of a bottle in sample and shipping fees if you try a bunch of things, but without them the odds of regretting a bottle purchase are, IMO _extremely_ high. Better to burn the price of one bottle in samples and the price of another on a bottle you love, than to buy two bottles you don't much like.

It's so easy to just start with the epitomes of leather: Cuir d'Iris, Cuir Ottoman, Patchouli 24, Lonestar Memories, Cuir Amethyst and Tuscan Leather; but I think it's just as important to add those with a strong leather note like Cuir de Russie, Bel Ami, Antaeus, HOT Always, and Helmut Lang's Cuir - among (so many) others.

I'm not sure which one you're really after, though. I mean, the former are basically leather, leather and leather but the latter ones are leather chypres or something with a prominent leather note that adds to the overall symphony of notes.

Histoires de Parfums' 1740 (Marquis de Sade) starts off leather but the immortelle kills it on me, unfortunately. All the others are worth sampling or tracking down.

I've been happy with LuckyScent, Aedes, Parfum1, BeautyHabit, and BeautyEncounter - and The Perfumed Court for samples. There are plenty of other sites with great reputations, those just happen to be the ones I've used.

LOL! Off-Scenter, I adore Derby! I also forgot Cuir de Lancome, so another head slap for me!

I agree that the leather in Parfum d'Habit is subtle.

I have recently used Fragrancenet.com and they have a 15% discount for the code "basenotes."

Try Aramis. It's ubiquitous (here in the States at least) and the closest thing to Cabochard since Cabochard's reformulation into obscurity. It's an IBQ leather (like Bandit, Azuree, etc) and definitely worth smelling even if it doesn't end up being your cup of tea.

I recently found a 50 ml bottle of Cuir de Lancome on Amazon for $35 and free shipping! Great buy for a truly great, classic leather fragrance.

This Cuir is leather from opening right on through to the beautiful floral dry down. This is by far the most feminine true leather fragrance I've ever tried.

I got my sample off of Theperfumedcourt.....they're not very cheap, but they have a pretty large selection. I agree with the recommendation for Tuscan Leather though...I enjoyed it....lasted most of the work day as well.

Nobody has mentioned Quarum yet? pine topnotes and leather & usually you can find it in discounters(marshalls ,ross,tj maxx)for $10-15 .
I second Azuree -as long as it is the spray .It really is not very floral .I have the spray you will find widely availiable and an odd vintage cologne splash. The vintage cologne is a lot more floral.
