Thread: Retro Scents?

  1. #1

    Default Retro Scents?

I seem to fall in love with scents that are a throw back to the old days. Scents like M7, Helmut Lang EdP/C, Rive Gauche, and By Man. Anyway what are some others that you guys like?

Depends on which old days we're talking about but a few that come to mind are:

    Azzaro pour Homme
    Old Spice
    Gucci Nobile
    Eau Sauvage
    Antaeus
    Aramis
Boss 1 (or Original as I believe it's also referred to)
    KL Homme
    Acqua di Selva
    Trussardi Uomo
Chanel pour Monsieur (the one and only)

Oh crap...just realized you were speaking of more recent scents which invoke the memory of the likes of those which I listed before my palm hit my forehead.

    Never mind.

The scents you mention suggest older fragrances, but you can still actually buy a lot of older fragrances.

Those are thowbacks to the old days?
I've never come across the Helmut Lang, but the other three don't smell like the retro/classic stuff (that I wear almost exclusively) at all. They're either much too feminine and/or synthetic. I hate to say this, and maybe I'm all wet here, but: they just don't make 'em like they used to! I mean, literally!
Just one (34 year old) man's opinion, and I don't mean to offend. Different Strokes and all that!

Well Rive Gauche, M7, and Gucci PH are actually meant to be retro according to Tom Ford. Clearly Rive Gauche is, since it's basically new and improved Brut. M7 is kinda iffy, but shares some similarities to the 70's. Helmut Lang reminds me of some old scent my mom wore back in the day, and By Man just has an old time feel to it.

    Mouchoir de Monsieur (1904)
    Blenheim Bouquet (1902)

    Eau Sauvage (1966)
    Trumper's Wild Fern (1877)

I have a 2 part theory of why recently created but "old school style" frags are so rare

    - many true old school classics are still available
    - most new but retro frags, many directed by Tom Ford, have not done well in the market. So the evidence any other companies will see is that of risk, and likely lack of success.

And these Tom Ford-directed retro scents would include what?

This noob would love to know.

    Thanks in advance.

Most of the time I am very proud of the Basenotes community. Time after time I have witnessed the thoughtfulness, empathy & genuine friendship that members of this community extend to others - oldtimers & newcomers alike. There are other times, however, when egos get the upper hand and civility goes out the window. My philosophy is that I won't say anything here that I would not say if you were standing in front of me. Welcome to Basenotes, each and every one of us. ~ TwoRoads

I'm not sure all of them he's referring to Daryl J, but to me, TF Italian Cypress smells like a modernized, slightly refined version of Polo.
