Default What is Basenotes' Acqua di Gio?

Acqua di Gio has taken over America.

Which scent has taken over Basenotes?

    Acqua di Spray. Kidding.

TdH, Rive Gauche seem to be pretty well liked by many. Not too long ago, I see many suggesting Guerlain Vetiver, but much lesser these days. Couple of months ago, I think NR was also pretty hot.

Scents that have had their 15 minutes of Basenotes fame (ie: were raved about for a period of time and everyone was interested, or are relatively unknown outside of BN but still get frequent mentions as 'best in category'):

Terre d'Hermes (more like 15 hours of fame!)
    Black Aoud
    Rive Gauche
    Encre Noire
Domenico Caraceni 1913 (remember the DC1913 madness?? )
    Ambre Precieux
    Ambre Sultan
    Musc Ravageur
    Jubilation XXV
    Live Jazz
    ...others? Help me remember, guys!

I remembered when everyone was co-signing Iceberg Twice as the bargain bin favorite. What happened to that? I got a sample of it, dabbed it, and I hated that one.

In my opinion, apart from TdH and Rive Gauche

GIT, Mugler Cologne (up to a certain point), BDP seem to also belong to the frags getting much attention here on Basenotes

Default Re: What is Basenotes' Acqua di Gio?

AH yes, of course how could I forget GIT, Mugler or BdP.

The most recent one, perhaps, is Creed's Windsor. I think that it's fame will be short lived though as it is essentially unobtainable now.

Another perennial favorite is C&S No. 88, although it hasn't been talked about as much this last year for some reason - perhaps because of the reformulation.

You missed L'Air du Désert on the 15 minutes of fame list! That's, ahem, an Unforgivable mistake.
It is known that there are an infinite number of worlds, simply because there is an infinite amount of space for them to be in. However, not every one of them is inhabited. Any finite number divided by infinity is as near nothing as makes no odds, so the average population of all the planets in the Universe can be said to be zero. From this it follows that the population of the whole Universe is also zero, and that any people you may meet from time to time are merely products of a deranged imagination.

L'Air du Desert Marocain was hugely popular when I first arrived here. Now, people don't talk about it half so much. As much as Basenoters like to think of ourselves as preservers of the classics, we're just as prone as the rest of the world is to going "Look! Shiny! Want!" And dropping our current obsession for something new as soon as it catches our fancy.

Hell yeah, I'd also say TdH and GIT.

l'adDM not so much imho, since it hasnt gotten half as many threads as other and since its fabulous
The mentioned CoolWater (im sensitive there ) doesnt it get bashed pretty frequently in comparison to GIT? For 1/3rd of GITs price, I think its better than a third of GIT.
M7 has been hyped but as an trend-leading designer, doesnt it deserve to be?
Rive Gauche?Well, people like it, its a more than decent frag, so yeah, anything currently liked would turn up every once and again but it's not overbearingly discussed, is it?

My thoughts run along the same lines.

Here is a list, in descending order, of the twenty-five male fragrances most reviewed on Basenotes:

    A*Men / Angel Men
    Terre d'Hermès
    Vetiver
    M7
    Green Irish Tweed
    Kouros
    Gucci pour Homme
    Dolce & Gabbana pour Homme
    Cool Water

    Dior Homme
    Fahrenheit
    L'Eau D'Issey pour Homme
    Armani Code / Black Code
    Envy for Men
    Pi
    Bulgari Black
    Joop! Homme
    Le Mâle
    The Dreamer
    Eau Sauvage
    Silver Mountain Water
    Habit Rouge
    Allure Homme
    Rive Gauche pour Homme

What were some scents that were really all the rage on Basenotes though, for a brief (or longer) period? I'm talking about scents that really took over the boards like DC1913 did for awhile, where it seemed like EVERYONE had ordered a sample of it within a short time. Then, just a month or two later, it was rarely talked about at all.

I don't get how "the AdG of basenotes" morphed into "15 mintues of fame" the nature of basenotes is such that ... it's asking for a square circle to try to divine what is the AdG here. I think GIT has a sort of presence at least on BN so as to claim some sort of toppermost of the poppermost status. LDDM is most definitely not a 15 minute fame fragrance it is a revered staple around here (I prefer incense rose myself) but it's not got quite the universality of GIT in terms of ... presence. If you mean what fragrance is popular that you wish would go away cause it's too popular for me that would be Black Aoud. All that said I think Terre D'Hermes is a good answer too, and also am not nuts for it.

I totally agree on Terre d'Hermes (one of only two fragrances, the other being M7, I finished a bottle of). I also agree on Black Aoud, even though I've never smelled it.

But we totally forgot about the By Kilian line! Us Basenoters talk about them in Creed-esque terms now so much that it's almost legendary! And this is coming from a huge fan of Straight to Heaven!

It seems like us Basenoters, myself included, talk about Straight to Heaven, Cruel Intentions, and (as of more recently) Back to Black quite often. The other By Kilians, not so much. Why does Beyond Love not get much love?
