    Default Best Sandalwood ever

    Hello Basenoters,

I would like to purchase a Sandalwood based Fragrance. I do realize that due to environmental reasons Sandalwood based fragrances can be very difficult and expensive as well , any suggestions?

    Cheers,

    1. Vintage Santal Noble by Maitre Parfumeur Et Gantier
    2. Limited Edition Bois De Santal by CREED
    3. Sandalo by Lorenzo Villoresi

Those are my top 3 for perfumes containing large amounts of genuine Mysore Sandalwood oil.

My candidates would be vintage Santal Noble, Bois des Īles, and Dawn Spencer Hurwitz's Sandalo Inspiritu. The latter actually contains Mysore sandalwood, which may explain why it was recently discontinued. According to Luca Turin, Santal Noble uses Australian sandalwood, but the vintage formula is magnificent, no mater what the origin of its materials. I wouldn't venture to guess what Chanel uses in Bois des Īles, but the stuff smells too good to worry much about what's actually in it.

It's not environmentalism that's restricted sandalwood generally, it's that Mysore Sandalwood trees were grossly overharvested and are now restricted. Other sandalwoods, such as Australian, are available and there are sandalwood aromachemicals used in conjunction with real sandalwood oil in modern perfumes.

For 'real' Mysore sandalwood the least expensive is vintage/original formula Guerlain Samsara, especially the EdP and parfum. It depends on what you're looking for in a sandalwood perfume, but I like the "barbershop" style sandalwoods like Crabtree & Evelyn Sandalwood and Caswell Massey Sandalwood. Over the weekend I sampled a wonderful sandalwood - Royal Parvati (oil) by Ava Luxe.

+1 for Santal Noble and Bois des Īles very different, but both beautiful.

Here is the monster sandalwood thread where Vibrant Violet went through a bunch of testing with sandalwood frags over the course of a couple years. Great reading, if now a bit dated: http://www.basenotes.net/threads/171844-Best-Sandalwood

My experience is limited but of what I know,

    Creed Santal Imperial
    D. Tam Dao
    SL Santal Mysore

There is something sharp in Santal Noble that doesn't jive with me plus I don't like such a huge does of vanilla.
Is the juice worth the squeeze?

+2 for Santal Noble, Bois des Iles & Sandalo Inspiritu.

Santal Noble is heading downhill so older is better IMO - still great but it starts falling apart a bit after a while when the bitter cedar-woody-synthetic-whatever (?) element comes out of hiding.

I'll add Amouage Santal Attar & La Via del Profumo Santalum Album EDT for a straight-up approach to Mysore.

There are several that I'd praise as superior, all listed already on this thread by good friends. I'll say the first sandalwood I fell in love with is the discontinued one from L'Artisan.

As much as I love and support his vibrational theory, he says some off the wall stuff in his book reviews.......even the newer Santal Noble formula doesn't smell like Australian. Perhaps all the arid dryness of the cedar note in Santal Noble threw him...as Australian smells much drier and less buttery than Vanuatu or Indian. I presume the newer maitre formula uses Vanuatu, as it still has some deep buttery goodness, just not like the vintage.

Art of Shaving is an excellent example of Australian Sandalwood oil.

    Thanks, DULLAH.

Well, no wonder the "vintage" Santal Noble by Maitre Parfumeur Et Gantier was one of my winter favorites.

( I had to put vintage in quotes because it was still genuine mysore back when I bought it in, what? 2006?)

Good Lord! You'll all be looking for "vintage" Bulgari Aqua, Carnal Flower, Idole de Lubin and A*Men Pure Malt on eBay within a year or so. What's next?

Which brings me to Vibrant Violet's monster thread (Thanks for posting SlimPickins.)
Could anyone tell us which of the ones she lists as containing mysore sandalwood still do?

    Cheers,

Tam Dao is probably the best imo. People say it's an overdose of Iso E, but whatever. Smells like sandalwood to me. So does Kanon Norwegian Wood, althought a sweeter sandalwood, a little ore synthetic, a little less natural, but what do ya expect for such a low price. Then there's a little gem called Quicksilver. An awesome take on a natural sandalwood, with some added citrus notes. It may take you a few wearings to realize how much sandalwood is there, there's a lot, and it smells pretty natural, and can be acquired for hella cheap.

+1 for Sandalwood by Crabtee and Evelyn...My favorite Sandalwood was made by Fresh.... Sandalwood-Petitgrain it lasted on the skin for a LONG time.....very nice...you can still get decants of this @ The Perfumed Court. I've often wished that someone could capture the smell of Nippon Kodo burning sandalwood incense....THAT would be a fragrance to die for!

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the King yet.

    Richwood by Xerjoff

Richwood centers on sandalwood from Mysore, one of the most beautiful--and rare-- materials in perfumery. Crowning the sandalwood's mellow warmth is a halo of crisp citrus. Patchouli and dark rose tinged with cassis lend the fragrance the elegant earthiness of a premier cru Bourgogne. Just as vintage wine opens in the glass over time, revealing a tale of complex character, Richwood continues to unfold on skin, enticing the nose to return again and again to experience its splendor.

    XJ Richwood Notes
Mysore sandalwood, citrus accord, rose, patchouli
