Red face January 2011 Blind Sniff: Paint the Town Red!

For our January Blind Sniff, we are going to extend the recent holiday season a bit and celebrate the advent of 2011 with a virtual party. Our theme is Paint the Town Red! We’ve booked a chauffeur, so let’s dress up in our slinkiest dresses and best ties (red ones, of course!) and have some fun! We'll enjoy drinks and dinner at the ritziest place in town, catch a concert (or tear up the dance floor at a club or two?), and perhaps indulge in some late-night flirtation with our sweeties.

Here’s how this works: There are three mystery fragrances, labeled “A”, “B”, and “C”. We will sample them, one at a time, in that order. Our sniffers, Actiasluna, Evangeline, and Warum, will post their observations, impressions and guesses, with the goal of identifying each fragrance. Here are some questions to get them started:

What is the color of the “juice”?
    The concentration: EdT? EdP? Parfum?
Do you think it’s marketed to men, women, or both?
Is it a drugstore cheapie? Celebrity fragrance? Designer? Niche?
What notes do you think you are smelling?
Development? Are there stages, or does it stay the same throughout?
How might the fragrance choice relate to our theme?

The more discussion the better. As the host, I will throw out questions, confirmations, and hints. Our good friend kbe has kindly agreed to be my backup. He also has the samples and fragrance info, and will help with the hints and questions as needed and as he likes.

Sniffers, please feel free to guess specific fragrances at any point in the game. Spectators are encouraged to have fun with this and to freely post comments and questions. If those playing along have specific fragrance guesses, please PM me with them so that our sniffers have the time they need for sleuthing.

We'll begin tomorrow (Friday) evening at about 5:00 PST!

Shoot - I had 15 minutes to get a glimpse of Wolfie's intuition and I blew it!! Well, I have a few guesses of my own I suppose, and if I know anything about Haunani or this game, there are probably several clues in that first post! Well done, btw, H - very enticing! I'm certainly up for a night on the town!

I'm waiting for my Sinan to be gone for good, and it will take a huge effort to keep me from spraying something new, but I'm going to be fresh and fragrance-free when it's time to spritz.

So, that's in about ...four hours. Pooh. I'm going to have to go and busy myself!

Default Re: January 2011 Blind Sniff: Paint the Town Red!

I don't recognize it, but there is something familiar about it.

It's becoming more vaguely floral, and there's some fresh citrus. It's getting less detergenty and I'm liking it better now, although it's reminding me of scented feminine hygiene products - white flowers and clean musks. It's pretty ....not in a fluffy pink way, but this must be marketed to women.

Well, Jon, just in time for a discussion of feminine hygiene products, LOL! I won't say too much yet but Evangeline has hit a few correct buttons already!

In those top notes, E, does any particular floral note pop out?

  24. #24

Default Re: January 2011 Blind Sniff: Paint the Town Red!

Nothing very floral was jumping out at first , but now I think I might be getting rose. It's changing pretty quickly so I'm going to spritz again on this arm. Okay, lessee...

That sort of shrill, very familiar but a bit fleeting note, is that lily-of-the-valley?

A: definitely a soapy and little loud opening... (achoo)and is that aldehyde (my code word for eye-watering smells I don't recognize...heh.)

I swore when I spritzed it on the paper I smelled a little rose behind the loud (also) but not sure now that I've sprayed on skin.

May be musk like E says, ... and Lily of the Valley? (I'm behind Evang. so I think she's right.) It's a "greeny" sort of white flower on the start.

Now a sweeter note coming up on the paper (but not on skin)...I'm not getting citrus but right now citrus topnotes are smelling vinegary to me so who knows? (my nose is weird, thanks for asking btw!!! ) Yup, a little sweetish rose note for sure on skin.

Orange blossoms, maybe....but they're not very warm. It's fresh and bright - there must be bergamot in there too, right? Isn't bergamot in everything? I'm still getting a whole lot of clean and musky from the top, and something rosier and warmer coming from the heart.

Good going, luna - even knowing it's there I don't get the lavender.

Wow - I don't get honeysuckle either. I'm terrible at this game - let's play something else!

E, try respritzing and see if you get it at the beginning.

A, no frangipani or lemongrass listed.

You are doing great, E – you identified rose and musk right out of the box! This is SUPPOSED to be hard.

I don't see cumin listed in the notes, A.

Whatever "hovery" note seems to be carrying both the soapy lavender and an almost spicy, sweaty note. hmm.

It's almost like beeswax, but not smoky-ish like castoreum. Hmm.

Hi Darkdreams! I'd say this almost has an eighties vibe to it, which would make it likely designer. My guess anyway.

Well then, you did a good job. It is hard.

You know what - I smell the lavender in the bottle, but not once I sray it - isn't that strange? Once I spray that soft lavender is replaced by detergent for a while, until it morphs into the soapy and clean but pretty floral a la Playtex Light Days...

Now it's reminding me of Bath and Body Works Moonlight Path on this arm and Caron's Or et Noir over here.
