    Default Strangest fragrance house?

What fragrance house to you think has the strangest ones. E.g. most acquired tastes.

IMO, L'Artisan takes the cake. They use some of the strangest spices, musks, and animallic notes. Few of their fragrances are enjoyable to me, and even less are wearable.

I don't think L'Artisan is that strange at all.
I think Etat Libre d'Orange and Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab are the strangest houses. BPAL has hundreds of fragrances, limited editions, and their own forum with a cult-like following. I've tried a few and wasn't impressed.
Oriscent, AgarAura Pure Ouds, Creed, LIDGE, Patou Pour Homme, tons of niche and rare stuff for sale!

I'm a sucker for strange fragrances but personally I find ELDO's compositions to be anything but weird (with the exception of SM, Charogne and Rien). The strangest/weirdest houses are, IMO, Humiecki & Graef, Nico Uytterhaegen, Neil Morris, O'Driù and Comme Des Garcons.

CB I Hate Perfume. They have some unusual compositions that I think take their scents into more art territory than fragrances, and they use water as a carrier instead of alcohol.

I think they use oil - the bottles say "water perfume", but the liquid itself is much oilier and more thick-flowing than that. I'm pretty sure it's not water. CB does have an interesting and pretty "strange" lineup, I agree - and I like some of their scents a lot.

L'Artisan by far. Serge Lutens may be 2nd. Their fragrances I know are well liked but 90% of them I do not like. Chergui and Gris Clair are the only ones the I have liked but not loved.

I agree regarding ELDO, the imagery and a couple of scents play with the extreme but the majority are pretty normal arrangements with a twist.

So far I say CdG. I can't think of another house with this sort of variety of unusual fragrances.

Of course there are so many houses I'm yet to try that there could well be far more fantastic oddities out there.

Thanks for the other houses you've mentioned alfarom, I'm going to see if I can hunt these down.

Diptyque is "strange" because its lexicon of smells seems borrowed more from room scents than from traditional skin perfumery. Great smells, not always wearable.

As far as the designer realm goes, I'd probably say Mugler. Most of their scents are daring and different from most popular designers and often require more than one wearing to appreciate them. (A*Men and all of its flankers, Womanity, Angel, Alien, etc.)

Comme des Garcons has a number of fragrances that have no relation whatsoever to classical perfumery, but are instead realistic recreations of real-world smells. The strange part is that they nevertheless market them as perfumes.

For instance, Series 1 Leaves: Tea exactly recreates what you smell if you stick your nose into a bag of Twinings Lapsang Souchong tea leaves---it is quite a marvel. I am undecided on whether it is useful as a personal fragrance, though.

Sadly my testing of them is pretty limited. I seem to remember that Mike Perez and Unger Woo have tried quite a few a while back. The ones I gave a full wearing:

Cowgirl Grass - Lutens' Cedre with sage.

$ - my favorite, a kind of harsh jasmine with soft leather.

Siberian Snow - cold, minty narcissus.

But I really want to get around to Resin, Cowboy Grass, and their Orris.

I checked their website, and it seems they blend water and oil. Here's the discription:

"The Ingredients in all CB Water Perfumes (...) are: Distilled Water, Fragrance, PPG-26 Buteth-26, PEG-40 and Hydrogenated Castor Oil. (...) Oil & water are what the skin naturally needs to hold fragrance the longest – I use those as the bases for all my perfumes".

Oil AND water! It seems we were both right. I love it when that happens!

Ditto on that. All this talk about strange perfumes is driving me crazy. I'd like to hear some names of the ones folks are alluding to.

Particularly the ones that are strange....and good.

"Good" being assumed to be subjective, of course.

Who knows. CdG is certainly avant-garde, but I wouldn't say they smell very "strange," and most of them are quite easy to wear. ELDO is just tongue in cheek.

I wouldn't call an entire fragrance house strange based on one fragrance, but I will say, smelling Jicky for the first time is still probably my most strange, cerebral/visceral moment in my perfume journey.

So many p*ss poor fragrances and so expensive.
The bottles too... at first you think "Wow they're pretty impressive" and then the dreadful lids and grotty looking liquid inside just feel like pure doom and gloom.
It is strange that they are allowed alongside Robert Piguet and Amouage in luxury department stores...

Six strange perfumes from Comme des Garcons that I think are worth trying:

Leaves: Mint & Shiso ( Mint new-mown lawn in a bottle, with mint; Shiso is the same accord, with cumin )
Synthetic: Tar ( tires in a bottle - Bulgari Black shorn of mainstream appeal )
Stephen Jones ( brittle, metallic violet with aldehyde overdose )
Guerilla No 1 ( fleshy champaca floral with burnt-out appliance smell )
    Odeur 53 ( strange synthetic magazine-smell in a bottle )

They do make some safe scents ( and some quality ones at that ), but there are more oddballs in CdG's line than most.
