Default Musc Ravageur v Muscs Koubla Khn

I was convinced that Musc Ravageur was the way to go for musk, a fantastic scent. However, today I sampled Muscs Koublai Khan and it is extremely nice also. They are quite different in the top and middle but similar at the basenote. Which one do you like better and why. Also, are there any other musks that I need to ry before making a purchase or do these two stand above all others?
Five that I am enjoying right now

    1) Sel de Vetiver by The Different Company
    2) Spiritueuse Double Vanille by Guerlain
    3) Bois des Iles by Chanel
    4) Devin by Aramis
    5) Coromandel by Chanel

I seem to be anosmic to the musk in Musc Ravageur. Thirty minutes of cinnamon rolls and then nothing on me. I got a chance to test wear MKK and I must say I kind of liked it. It has to me a horrible intense "animal in a cage" opening, but in the full wearing, it's a sort of creamy musk on me that flirts with dirty.

Not sure if it's considered a "musk" per se, but I am an advocate of PG L'Ombre Fauve. That's my go to for that kind of animalic scent.

I definitely prefer MKK. I like Musc Ravageur, but I feel it is both less refined and less animalic than MKK; unlike stylinla, I do perceive a musk more clearly in MR, but it is sweeter and much less strong than in MKK. MKK is warmer and more complex, and I especially like the civet addition. I agree with stylingla that the opening, on paper, can be a little scary. But it's more mellow on skin, while still retaining the animalic character.

I cannot think of any other comparable musks. Kiehl's musk (both in spray and in oil) is good, but more simple and hippy and I wouldn't put it next to the other two. However, it is much cheaper.

MKK reminds me of something I can create for free if I get a bit sweaty. MR is just an amber frag, though I can't say how good an amber frag it is because I don't like them, in general. If you want a really musky, animalic frag that doesn't smell like human sweat, I suggest Vermeil for Men.

Musc Ravageur for me. MKK is just to weird for me to handle.. It`s a very "intresting" smell, but on a human? -No way!

For me MR is a cinnamon-creamy nothingness. Have tried it 3 times, just cannot understand the love for this. Most over-rated fragrance ever for me.

Now MKK is an altogether different beast. A true animal.

I love MKK, you may want to try Urban Musk by Tom Ford, it's pretty good stuff. I find MR too sweet for my tastes.

I love MR. Even though it is a musk I don't consider it one. Never have gotten a musk smell or vibe from it. Haven't tried MKK yet.

I love them both. Lets put it this way. Scene = Nightclub 4am in the morning and the harsh lights are coming on for closing time. Only a few customers left!
The large drunken rugby player at the bar slobbering over a blond that is old enough to be his mother - He is wearing MKK.
The guy whose at the bar celebrating his job promotion - He is wearing Musc Ravenger.
The toting rolex owner with greased back hair in the monkey suit .. - He is wearing .............. (what is he wearing??? NB's) as he leans across to the barman toting up the till after a busy night and not yet finished because the waitress has agreed to come back to his flat for the first time tonight - He is wearing .........(what is he waring BN's?) Answers please (A) Owner (B) Barman

Both are good, but I like Muscs Koubla Khn. Layering is an interesting idea.

I find Musc Ravageur to be a boring and ultimately annoying too-sweet gourmand. Neither sexy or masculine to me, i fail to see the point of it, unless you want to smell like a posh dessert. And this is coming from someone who enjoys vanilla notes.

MKK on the other hand is a quite different fragrance, almost a masterpiece with really no faults, the sexy masculine "come hither" scent par excellence, a veritable sex bomb that will make the right women swoon and rraawrr during naughty time (resist the temptation to explain to her that it is a hard to find niche and expensive fragrance. Don't be that guy).

So, there is not even a comparison between those two for me. I have used both for, ahem, intimate occasions (THAT'S WHAT WE ARE TALKING ABOUT HERE GUYS, AMIRITE?) and MKK is head and shoulders above MR.

Both are good. Just wait for cinnamon to subside on MR for true animalic musk. Trust me, I dislike cinnamon but bought MR.

Answer to OldSchoolCharm post 27 February 2011: From what I've smelt, like a magazine (Tom Ford Urban Musk) compares to a book (Muscs Koublai Khan).

Did a HUGE u-turn with MKK. Found it to be terrific on humid, sweaty days.

Can't warm to MR though, it's just too "busy" for me.

MKK is more complex and daring, while MR is a bit safe but more wearable, and tolerable by others. It really depends on what you want, and the occasion. I prefer MKK but it wouldn't hurt to own both, or to even layer.

I've been told that Tom Ford's Urban Musk smells fecal.

Some say a comparable fragrance to MKK/MR is Absolue Pour le Soir by Maison Francis Kurkdjian, so maybe give that one a try?

Agreed. MR smells like something you could buy in the women's section at Ross. MKK is a bit over the top but you can't deny its raw power.

MR for me. I wanted to love MKK but it was too unwashed-body-parts on me.
