    Default Sharp Herbal Cyphres?

I've recently been enjoying Romeo Gigli Sub Est a lot, and find myself compelled to seek out more scents like it, since it is discontinued.

Sud Est seems to be a hybrid of a light Mediterranean herb scent (Baime, Virgilio, Tuscany, the the AdP Blu Mediterraneo series, etc.) with the more substantial cyphre category.

So I started trying to think of herbal cyphres. I came up with the Aramis Devin and Caron Yatagan...but IMO they are definied more my their leathery notes than their herbs and don't quite fit the bill.

Guerlain Coriolan is the closest I've come, but it's also discontinued!!

Please help me think of some more sharp herbal cyphres! Bonus points for a nice jasmine or some other floral note in there, like Sud Est.

Loewe Pour Homme = Loewe Para Hombre, yes? If so, this has been on my test list for a long time.

yes livejazz ,that┤s right ....we are talking ┤bout the same scent , the only objection is that the current version is softer and less spicy than the vintage one.

Aramis 900 and Aromatics Elixir are the sharpest herbal chypres I know. Loewe pour Homme is excellent but it's more of a lively spicy fougere than a chypre. Doesn't matter anyway. It's great. I haven't tried the new stuff but they say it's been attenuated significantly. Same goes for Jules. It's a fougere that works in the way you want. Chanel 19 and Diorella are excellent. Or Black as well, though it's more bitter than sharp. Probably the most bitter fragrance I've smelled. It's been awhile since I've smelled it, but Balenciaga Portos is sharp and herbal. Not a masterpiece but many seem to like it

Hmm...now forgive if these are not true chypres, but when I think of sharp and herbal, I usually come up with Quorum and Krizia Uomo. Both, to me have floral (or floral-esque) hearts, but some find Quorum's leathery base a bit too much.

Another vote for the wonderful Eau du Sud.
Mazzolari Mazzolari, although it's so resinous that it maybe has more the character of a fougere to some. To me it's the closest thing to fresh rosemary crushed between the fingers.
And Azuree certainly deserves a place on this list. Green, floral, herbal and a very clear and satisfying oakmoss chypre note.
And one last suggestion: PdN Le Temps d'Une Fete is farther toward the floral end and less herbal than the others but there is a wonderful lush greenness to it that is balanced with a bunch of other stuff. Sorry I can't be more articulate than that at present but I do think it's worth a sniff or at least further reading.

Forgot to mention Nino Cerruti pour Homme (1979), herbal, relatively sharp, but mainly just a rich green. An excellent and very complex fragrance, and by far the best thing from this house.

My SOD is marvelous and fits very well into this category: Parfum D'Empire's Eau de Gloire. Meant to evoke the scents of the Corsican maquis: lavender, rosemary, anise, olibanum, herbal notes. If you like Gigli's Sud Est you would like this.
I like this style, often in what I call "garrigue".

I don't usually respond to this type of thread because I just don't often notice similarities between fragrances.

I agree with Bigsly. I doubt that it's a chypre, but I was just beginning a review of Pheromone by Marilyn Miglin a couple of days ago and the first thing I thought at first sniff was Sud Est - and it seemed to keep that character throughout its long run. I got my sample from Beauty Encounter.

+1 for Sous le Vent - I can't enough of this one.

Something from left field - if you happen to find yourself in a Duty Free check out Estee Lauder Brasil Dream for Men. It's a 50ml 'Travel Exclusive' still, I think, been around for a year or so - there's more to this than the name and packaging suggest. It has quite a herbal, slightly spicy, modern take on a classic 70ish masculine feel to me, oakmoss and all.

Reviving this thread to note that I haven't found anything really like Romeo Gigli Sud Est. It's potent, dry and its herbal character goes the whole way through. The slight soapy iris note gives it a nice balance, while a rich almost ambery balsamic accord in the base prevents it from getting too harsh. Great stuff.

Azzaro Acteur, Quorum, Grey Flannel, Bowling Green, Halston 1-12, Yatagan, Sunwater by Lancaster, Intuition by Estee Lauder, Eau de Givenchy (quite bracing and bitter to my nose), Green Water by Jacques Fath, Polo by Ralph Lauren, all come to mind.

    adding to the suggestions:
    O de lancome
    Knize Forest
    Esencia Loewe
    Givenchy Xeryus

also, a fragrance I came so close to buying blind (someone did just before me) is trussardi action uomo. Trussardi is a brand I respect, and the note list for uomo makes me salivate:

galbanum, bergamot, artemisia, mint, jasmine, lavender, coriander, rosemary, juniper berries, cedar, moss, tonka, amber and musk
