Default Givenchy Gentleman - What an amazing fragrance!

I've never owned an animalic before, and this is quite the introduction.
The opening blast instantly reminded me of the animalic notes I had smelled in Kouros, but as Kouros turns into a musty, rose, pretty boy fragrances, Gentleman never subdues the animalic presence, with just a small spritz on my hand creating a huge aura around me.

Very enjoyable and intoxicating stuff. I can't say I've ever felt as attracted to a fragrance just by sniffing the bottle. You do an immediate double take.

Very affordable too. Snatched a 100ml for 49 euro.

I'm a fan of this one too from the leather opening and patchouli dominant drydown to the slight musky basenotes due to a hint of civet. Excellent fragrance.

    Which version do you have?

Personally, I find the patchouli something of an overdose, and can't enjoy it as much as Monsieur de Givenchy.

I just bought it at a department store, so I imagine it's the most recent formulation

Okay, that's the new one. I thought I liked it but it caused throat irritation (second one to do that, after Krizia Uomo), but I like the vintage and it doesn't bother me. Vintage bottles have a label that wraps around the entire bottle, just so you know. The vintage opening is monstrous but then within an hour it's a great frag.

Love, love, love it. I've also gotten more compliments when wearing it than almost any other fragrance.

GG was the first aftershave i ever owned, i received it as a present. Really enjoyed it at the time. Tested it again recently and it doesn't seem to have changed at all in all these years. It's not really my thing now though, but non the less, a great fragrance.

I am only familiar with the vintage version. One of my all time favorite fragrances. The drydown is sublime.

I was so regularly drenched in this in my teens that I prefer to leave the olfactory associations unsullied.

I guess the drydown makes up for any unpleasant top notes or middle notes

I don't find the opening unpleasant at all. In fact, I can't stop whiffing the bottle, and I love the powerful opening spray.

Then again, it is a reformulation I have. Maybe other members' experience comes from the apparently more potent original

I can't stop sniffing this, it's completely intoxicating.

    Anything else that's similar?
Only fragrances that I've smelled with resembling notes were Kouros and Antaeus if I recall correctly.. I have no experience with animalic fragrances

Ulrich Lang's Nightscape is like an updated GG. It's lighter (what isn't?!), easier to wear, and more 'masculine' than many a modern patch.

Not as classy, but you could try Daniel Hechter. It is sweeter and maybe does not have the civet, but it is ridiculously cheap, (In Britain about £10 for 100ml.

Sampled it yesterday, on the basis of this thread, while I was on a fragrance safari. Very nice, I must say. Almost bought it on the spot, but decided to shop a little more for a better price, and/or maybe a vintage bottle.

Thank you to the Basenoters for introducing me to this fine fragrance.

I'm not sure I want lighter. I've always worn 'light' (by GG standards) and 'modern' fragrances, but I'm absolutely addicted to this.
It's so strong and invigorating. I feel like a Man!

Just got the small flacon of GG in 100 ml in the new formula.

I used the original GG back in 1986-1987 as a young teen (believe it or not) and back then the opening was stronger AND BETTER. Now it's a toned down version - not sure I'm so crazy about it any longer

Still very nice 'gentleman' cologne but a pale ghost of the original IMHO. I had the glass bottle with white label and black Givenchy logo.
Now it looks and smells plainer....still good but not great anymore.

then.. I don´t want to try the older formule. Must be devastating! the current is fire and last for eternity.

H.O.T. Always by Bond 09 is very similar to the vintage formula; civet included! Index Patchouli Pure by Fresh is also very similar (sans civet). I believe that the fragrance and flavor company behind both is Robertet.
I've often wondered if the concept of plagiarism is recognized in the fragrance industry?

I also adore Givenchy Gentleman! I recently obtained it and I've been talking about it on the boards here quite a bit. Here's what I said about it in the dark, creepy fragrance discussion thread:

"Do you agree? It's got the dirt, the wood, the wood stain, the musty dankness, and, most importantly, the smell of rot long after the biological processes of decomposition have ended and all that's left is a small amount of mildew and mold spores."

I think it's far more antique cabinet than leather, and it is not any worse for it. I just wish the top notes would last longer.
