    Default Longevity VS Sillage

Do sillage and longevity of a fragrance go hand in hand? Is there a one with low sillage but high longevity?

They don't go hand in hand.

I've found that EDTs can often be better for projection and sillage where EDPs usually do better in longevity...

nope, they're often different... but the question is why?

Design - it could be built into the frag, example it's loud and then dies because it's poorly designed or cheap, or maybe it's an Eau de Cologne so it's meant to fade out quickly after a burst of smell

Application - the wearer dabs/rolls it on instead of spraying it on, so the scent takes longer to evaporate but doesn't project as far, or they spray overly liberally so it lasts all day but only because they put on so much,

skin type - for some people, the same application has different results. I have dryer skin so frags tend to not last that long on me for example.

Concentration/carrier - EdP's and oil based frags tend to project less and last longer

    etc...
NEW STUFF FOR SALE - TOM FORD, Guerlain, Acqua Di Parma, Serge Lutens, Byredo, Diptyque, etc. .

Most of the time I am very proud of the Basenotes community. Time after time I have witnessed the thoughtfulness, empathy & genuine friendship that members of this community extend to others - oldtimers & newcomers alike. There are other times, however, when egos get the upper hand and civility goes out the window. My philosophy is that I won't say anything here that I would not say if you were standing in front of me. Welcome to Basenotes, each and every one of us. ~ TwoRoads

Just few examples from my wardrobe:

Low sillage high longevity: Gucci PH II
High sillage low longevity: JOOP! Nightflight

Also fragrances like Encre Noire or Pi when applied lightly have great longevity (12+ hours) without ruining life of everyone around you with high sillage.
Current TOP 5 from my collection:

    1. Gucci Pour Homme II
    2. Chanel Coromandel
    3. L'Instant de Guerlain Pour Homme Extreme
    4. Encre Noire
    5. Dior Homme Intense

    Examples abound, such as,

Extreme longevity (4 or 5 days) with low sillage is found in Annick Goutal's Sables.

Gucci Rush easily lasts 12 hours, but can hardley be smelled after three hours, if not reactivated by perspiration or some other moisture.

Old bottle Guerlain Vetiver EDC lasts 14 or more hours, but with low sillage, compared to old bottle Guerlain Vetiver EDT which last five or six hours with high sillage.

Longevity is measurable by time albeit different times for different people. Question is there a measuring tool for sillage? Do we say "close to others" "same room", "leave a trail". Is there a more exact science available to measuring Sillage for instance 2 metres - 5 metre - 10 metres or another way etc?
