Default What is Everclear made of?

Does anyone know what grain Everclear 95% 190 proof made of?

    Thanks.

No. However, why should that matter? It's pure 95% ethanol. Distilled, so there's likely nothing else in it. The most obvious candidate is corn. But if it was my distillery I'd use anything that's sweet and fermentable. It really doesn't matter.

    It matters for Passover issues

The company will be open on Monday (it's too late already), so I though someone here would know...

Everclear, as with any of the many grain neutral spirits produced, can be made from all types or mixes of cereal grains

Wow, that's an aspect of the "what shall I use for my alcohol" question that I'd never considered before!

Does distilling make grain okay? I'm no Rabbinical scholar, so I have no idea. But I guess it's one reason someone might choose to spring for that pricey grape alcohol when making fragrances.

Just got a reply back from the company. They say Everclear 95% is made of corn. Ok for Passover.

Does anybody know, where can I buy Everclear or Perfumers Alcohol in Toronto, Ontario, Canada? I would really appreciate the reply.

I know you can get Everclear at the duty-free shop on the way into Canada. It's pretty cheap, something like $8 or $10 for 750 ml/fifth US gal.

Or you can get 151 alcohol and spend $5 on molecular sieve and have 200 proof absolute alcohol.

Dear chemistwithanose, can you please give more details on this $5 molecular sieve and where we can get one? Also, will it work to remove the denaturing compounds from 95% denatured ethanol?

Sure will work to remove denaturants. I always thought it amusing when they put things like methanol or pyridine or what have you into the cheap ethanol. It does deter 99% of people, though!

You want 3A molecular sieve to remove water and methanol (a denaturant) in ethyl alcohol.

And you can bake them in the oven on clean to regenerate them!

keep in mind that 5lbs will do about 50 lbs of alcohol (they'll hold 10% their weight in water or more).
