    Default Balenciaga Pour Homme

Reading about this fragrance on the forums, it seems to get a lot of praise. So, it's a powerhouse?

If so, just how powerful is it, what smells similar, and can I still find it online?

I find it to be pretty strong, but not overwhelming.

The closest fragrances I can think of, and the usual ones it is most often compared with, are Lapidus Pour Homme and Kouros.

It is less animalic and sweeter than Kouros.

Kouros is readily available, and I believe that the Lapidus can be found relatively cheaply. If you like those, and can imagine a blend of the two, then you'll probably like Balenciaga, which is most likely considerably more expensive.

Yes, it's a powerhouse - the sweetest powerhouse of them all. It was discontinued way back when, so you won't find it easily at all. Nothing smells similar ....

    Top notes:
Ceylan Cinnamon, Italian Bergamot, Coriander, Thyme.

    Body notes;
    Patchouli, Sandalwood, Cypres, Cedar.

    Dry notes:
Oakmoss Yougoslavian, Vanilla Bourbon, Amber, Musk.

    OR: Osmoz list them as:

    top note
    Lavender, Coriander, Bergamot, Green Note

    middle note
Jasmine, Lily of the valley, Caramel, Honey

    base note
    Vanilla, Patchouli, Sandal, Benzoin

It's a large fragrance but it actually wears like one of the less sweet orientals due to its being cut with an abundance of dry woods and herbs, and a base dominated by oakmoss more than amber or any other sweets. It's easy to initially perceive it as sharp but the edges are soon rounded off with precision. There are only a few orientals ever made that approximate its quality and it also makes an amazing scent for women: I know because my girlfriend wears it. It was made by the great Gerard Anthony, who blacksmithed Azzaro pour Homme. For what it's worth, Balenciaga pour Homme is considerably better than any niche of it's kind.

It is accurate that the last batch of BpH they made was slightly sweeter than the original.

BpH (1990) is Ho Hang Club (1987) with the artemisia and basil taken out, and lime and honey and a little clove added. The two Balenciagas have similar structure and feel. HHC is discontinued but still available online.

Balenciaga PH is one of my favorite designer scents. I assure you that nothing smells quite like this. If Kouros, Lapidus PH and Lorenzo for Men by Paolo Conti had a threesome that resulted in offspring, it would be Balenciaga PH.

If Kouros never existed, Balenciaga PH would be my favorite powerhouse.

I wore this all the time back in the mid-90s, went through two full bottles of it, and it was practically a signature scent for me back then. I miss it terribly, and regret not buying backup bottles 6 or 7 years ago when Marshalls was selling 3.4 oz. bottles for like $15.

This thread made me go get my bottle and spray myself a few times. I am ALWAYS reminded just how rich, dense and just plain good this scent is every time I wear it.

Balenciaga PH......along with a handful of other designers are truly "designer-niche"; especially when they stand toe to toe with current releases.

A great fragrance. Very similar to Lapidus pour Homme, (grey bottle and grey marbled packaging). Perhaps LpH has a stronger tobacco note, but these two fragrances VERY similar. The advantage with LpH is that is is still produced and can be found at a fantastically low price. I do not agree with the comparison to Ténéré. I find no similarities whatsoever.

The similarity between the two, smell-wise, is from the honey they both have in quantity. BpH is incense-y though, which makes the honey association easy to miss.

Pardon me if I change direction of this thread for a moment. Since Lapidus Pour Homme is being mentioned for comparison reasons ( and for good reason), Lapidus Pour Homme would be even closer to Balenciaga PH if it wasn't for the dominant pineapple note.

I need to bring into vision Lorenzo for Men by Paolo Conti. Lorenzo is a superior and more wearable version of Lapidus. It possesses the same denseness, sillage and longevity of Balenciaga, Kouros and Lapidus, but is more related to Lapidus for it's use of pineapple.

It's a better implementation of the fruit note and balanced perfectly. All four of these masculines are first cousins.

Hi Pollux. I had mini's because I couldn't find a large bottle, but 2 months ago, an ebay seller posted a slew of 100ml NIB for around $27 shipped.

I didn't pull the trigger because no one bought them and I ( wrongly) thought they would be relisted.

There's one on ebay now for $69 plus shipping. I asked the seller to contact me if he ever drops the price I saw it for previously. He ignored my message.

If you like Lapidus, you will like Lorenzo even better.

I definitely smell the similarities b/w Balenciaga and Lapidus PH, but I don't get it until Lapidus dries down. There are remarkable similarities at that point. However, I should note that it's been about ten years since I last smelled Balenciaga PH.

Lapidus is an awesome fragrance, a real powerhouse, very macho. It has brutal strength. However, I find it hard to wear every day, and I do prefer Balenciaga Pour Homme, which I used to wear every day.

Perfume houses re-release old fragrances all the time, but I don't think Balenciaga PH will ever see the light of day again. I think this style has seen its day, and even back in the 80s and early 90s, it was still pretty out there. It really pushed the powerhouse envelope. I'm surprised Lapidus PH is still being made, and that was released before Balenciaga PH!

It's in complete opposition to today's sensibilities. I thoroughly enjoy it in cool to cold temps and as heavy as I normally apply scent, 2 spritzes of all these bad boys is perfect. Anything more is intrusive.

I think I remember my dad having a bottle of Lapidus Pour Homme. Trying it on my own, pineapple is among my least favorite fragrance notes, and thus the opening put me off severely. If I got the chance to try it again and let it dry down, I certainly will.

As for the Balenciaga, there's a lot of fragrances I've been buying and getting lately for Christmas, so this one will have to wait a bit

Nowadays, you rarely run into a designer frag that is rich, dense and lush with amazing longevity. BPH is an extremely masculine smelling scent.

Do yourself a favor and when ( or if you can), get your hands on a mini of Lorenzo for Men by Paoli Conti.
