Dior Leather Oud. But the original question posted implies that Designer fragrances in general are not as "good" as or don't have the same desired characteristics as "niche" fragrances and then we get into that argument. Designer frags can be and are sometimes just as good as or better than what are called niche and Dior Leather Oud is an excellent example. It's as good as anything.

One no one has mentioned so far: Angel Schlesser Oriental II, though marketed at women, puts me in mind of a unisex niche offering. If you see niche as being about quality then most high-end designers are just as good, or better. This can be best illustrated by the number of niche companies which people call designer companies, and vice-versa. If you see it as a world of less middle of the road offerings which cater to a smaller market then many discontinued and vintage designer scents exhibit these qualities.

Add to the list Chanel Homme Sport Extreme. The first two hours of which are intriguing and miles ahead of the standard designer fare. Very well constructed for the most part. If only they could keep that stock designer "sport" synthetic smell in the background , this one might be even better ......arghhhhh

Most Guerlains and Carons are not niche, but still have that accord without the extremely high prices.

Seems people are still under the assumption that because it's called "niche" it is somehow better or made with higher quality ingredients...

Similar to other fragrances? Niche doesn't always smell better.

We all know that it's basically impossible to define niche. It's even more difficult to define what/how niche smells like. But I'll play along...

Etro is technically a designer, but smells very much like niche - the whole line.

    I concur - a niche pepper scent...wonderful stuff. And, so well-priced! +1 more!

I also concur with my friend, Francolino, Vintage YSL is amazing. As well, I would include some Vintage Guerlain and Vintage Givenchy bottles.

Caron is in a category all to itself. Perhaps one of the most original, avant-garde and stylistic houses of scent that has ever existed. They create wonderful bottles - so many that are better than niche (or inspired numerous niche scents).

And, Hermes - Terre d'Hermes has a wonderful quality (which helped pave the way for "Iso E Super-highway" of modern perfumery that includes Encre Noire). But, going back farther - try Bel Ami (Vintage) and come to the quick realization what true quality is all about.

Final mention - Gucci Pour Homme (2003) under Tom Ford. An inspiration for so many as well. A modern masterpiece.

People get hung up on 'niche' too much. While I respect a lot of small producers who make quality scents, 'niche' fragrance is now rather mainstream. Just because you paid $200+ for a bottle doesn't mean it smells better than a Vintage beauty with ingredients that your niche bottle cannot contain. Indeed, the realm of niche needs to be fragmented a bit & re-categorized more specifically. Some "niche" producers could be considered simply as houses of scent due to their sheer output, yet they keep the prices high. Micro-producers of scent (with very limited production), while notable for those who can obtain a bottle are interesting to discuss - but when is production going to meet demand? And finally, the large number of "niche" producers who like to use ingredients/notes to label their bottles and have a massive financial backing, yet keep their bottle prices in the stratosphere...that is not truly "niche" as it should be defined.

I like this basic article on "niche" - http://www.perfume.org/all-about-per...the-difference - and concur with the list of houses at the end of the article.

Have you ever smelled the warm salty air off the Mediterranean on a sun-soaked, early summer afternoon in Cannes while sipping a glass of Dom Perignon while wearing an Italian linen suit in a full wearing of Acqua di Parma Colonia (1916) on the terrace at the Hotel Carlton off the Croisette? That is..."niche".

    Cheers,

    ericrico

Zirh Ikon is a wonderful scent...and intelligently uses a nice blend of synthetic ingredients (which keeps it so cheap). By the way, a lot of 'niche' scents contain a high percentage of synthetic ingredients as well. Don't think you are getting the pure essential oils of what is listed on the bottle.

To me, Zirh Ikon is better than most niche scents I have smelled on its own merit, far more wearable and a full bottle costs the sales tax of 50ml of high-end niche juice! And, if I count the number of compliments I get while wearing it, then I would have to put it on a short list (a Top 10/15 compliment-getter that I don't even wear that often).

Awesome juice. I'll leave the comparison to niche alone.

    Cheers,

    ericrico
