Default May Blind Sniff: A Fragrant Wedding Puzzle

Welcome to the May 2011 Blind Sniff!

May is Mr. & Mrs. Sunnyfunny's anniversary month, so I thought it would be very romantical to do a wedding-themed blind sniff. There are four samples this time around, and the perfumes themselves aren't necessarily wedding-themed, but they have everything to do with weddings because they are (in no particular order, please note)...

    Something Old
    (a vintage)

    Something New
    (a recent release)

    Something Borrowed
    (a masculine)

    and, of course,

    Something Blue
    (the possibilities are endless)

Debbborra, Haunani, and Weimar27, we can officially start tomorrow. I'll be at work until the evening, but feel free to start sniffing and speculating during the day, and I'll check in on my phone when I can. I'd like this to be completely laid back and relaxed-- don't feel like you need to be plastered to your computers until this is done. Spectator comments and questions are ALWAYS welcome, and please pm any guesses to me or my lovely co-host Warum.

Bumping it for everybody to see.

Inclusion of the Masculines in 2011 is becoming a trend, I would say.

What a great theme! I love the package that Sunnyfunny sent. There's an inner envelope with my name written all pretty. Inside is a hand-written invitation to "A Fragrant Wedding Puzzle", along with a sweet little "favor" of white bell-shaped mints all tied up in netting and a pink ribbon. And the samples, of course. Very clever! :-)

I just talked with Debbborra via Facebook, and she indicates that she'll be home soon. I suggested that we start sniffing at about 7:00 her time (NY), 4:00 mine (CA). I'm going to shower to remove my current fragrance (leftover from last night) and then I'll get out Sample A!!!

Well! I am showered and scrubbed and now wearing A. I can tell this is going to be hard! My first observations:

It's the darkest colored of the four fragrances. A light to medium amber color, like a good pale ale, perhaps!

I think I get a citrus in the opening notes. A mandarin, orange, or tangerine? It's more noticeable on paper than on my skin.

There is definitely something resinous. Not sure that I like it. My husband just took a sniff and said it reminded him of the asafoetida we bought for Indian cooking. I think he's right it's something like that!

I will guess that this is the "something borrowed" or the "something old". It doesn't smell "new" to me.

I get the impression of a musty herbal aperitif. This is already driving me crazy!

    Is it the masculine?

I'm going to sniff and post before scrolling up and reading your thoughts. No one laugh at me!
In the vial it is the exact color of Neil Morris Afire. It is not Neil Morris Afire thought. And I don't know if it is vintage but it doesn't smell modern. It's pretty and grown up. I smell Jasmine and something that might be oak moss. Something honeyed too. Hmm, it's got a sharpness that when someone else gets it I'll smack my head. It's not ambrette, but something that has a similar edge.

D, I'm not good at picking out jasmine, but I agree that there's something floral. Perhaps jasmine, or jasmine and lavender? Could be designated a chypre. I smell something like moss, too!

P.S. I agree that it's grown up and that it doesn't smell modern!

Is there some leather in this? It sweetens on the skin. I wonder if that's something animalic.

What about cedar, could whatever that is that's not moss be cedar?

I don't get the citrus, but that could be because most of what I wear is made in this millennium, and I think the use of citrus in the industry changed in the 80's or 90's. (That's not said with any note of certainty, that's an impression.) I assume it has bergamot, because everything has bergamot. I think there's probably a law about that.

I don't know! I still get the impression of moss, I think. Right now, I'm smelling something sweet and pretty. I guess this must be a heart note. Is it rose, as you suggested? Do you still smell that? Also, do you get the resinous vibe that I get?

  39. #39

I completely agree with Haunani. There is something there that could be castoreum. What's the difference between castoreum and civet? Could it be civet?

Can I speak in impressions? I think this is definitely not Shalimar. It doesn't have that lemon pledge gone awry thing happening. But it seems made in that sort of classical school of grown up, elegant lady perfumes. I think it's not Chanel because I don't get peach.

Ha! I know what you mean about bergamot! Seems like it would be a safe guess. However, I get the impression now that this could be something vintage. Perhaps the top notes have faded slightly in the bottle? Also there is the idea of petitgrain wood from a citrus.

I now think you are right, that this is probably feminine. But I'm not feeling sure at all!
