Narciso Rodriguez For Him IMO
I'm looking for a scent that brings to mind mourners in black, standing over flower-laden graves, in heavy rain. Any ideas?
Narciso Rodriguez For Him IMO

The wormwood in Amouage Memoir reminds me of when I did absinthe in a cemetery in Leeds.
But I'd say the Czech and Speake No. 88 nails it with the roses and dulled bergamot. It's like parts of it are dying, but remains a beautiful composition. Much like roses on a grave.
That's my take.
Memoir Man, Norma Kamali Incense, Norne, O Hira, Montecristo could work. They're all quite cerebral and certainly not buoyant.
Kiton - Men
Creed - Green Irish Tweed
Van Cleef & Arpels - Midnight In Paris EDP
Ralph Lauren - Polo Modern Reserve
Guerlain - Homme L'eau Boisee
Very good ones mentioned already. I would add:
Frederic Malle - Noir Epices -- Cold and sharp. Gives that vibe to me also. Unlike the others mentioned however, I don't find this one pleasant.
1. Creed - Pure White Cologne
2. Creed - Aventus
3. Tom Ford - Grey Vetiver
4. by Kilian - Straight to Heaven
5. Clive Christian - 1872
6. Montale - Aoud Legacy
7. Xerjoff - Nio
8. Neela Vermeire - Bombay Bling
9. The Different Company - De Bachmakov
10. Chanel - Allure Homme Edition Blanche
Interesting thread! As a funeral director I will be sure to avoid these suggestions. I love dark, woody, incensey fragrances but melancholy scents might not be a good idea for me.
Reflection Man. Depressing stuff.
Iris Silver Mist
I find that incense based fragrances tend to put me in a melancholic mood (maybe because of the association with churches, temples, funerals, etc?). To that end, CdG Avignon and Tom Ford Sahara Noir would be my suggestions. For a couple more that aren't necessarily incense based: Fahrenheit Absolute, +1 Narciso Rodriguez for Him and +1 Memoir Man.
Also any scent with an earthy patchouli note, or seaweed note does it to me.
Any scent that makes you guys moody for no apparent reason, lol?

+1 Narciso Rodriguez for Men (wet cement and somber) and NK Incense (more apocalyptic and dark)

+1 memoir man
Green Irish Tweed
Scandal Pour Homme
Ooh, De Profundis as well. With or without the Wilde connection, it's deliciously morose.
Salvador Dali Pour Homme to me is not only melancholy, it is darned near depressing.
1a. Slumberhouse Zahd
1. Amouage Epic man
2. Dior Leather Oud
3. Amouage Tribute Attar
4. Le Labo Patchouli 24
5. Amouage Opus VII
6. Bond No.9 New York Oud
7. Norma Kamali Incense
Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.
The IFRA can bite me!

This one is as morbid and unpleasant as it gets. I hated it, gave away my bottle the day after I got it, for free, did not even want it in the house.
I was tempted to suggest Memoir Man, but I don't find it melancholy, but rather brooding and introspective without the depressive connotation. Certainly not funereal. It's got too much of a fresh edge the whole time.
I can certainly see why people are mentioning Narciso Rodriguez, though. And De Profundis seems right, though I haven't ever been to a funeral, and have never created funereal flower associations.
Something very mossy and forest-like (but not overly fresh) would come across as melancholy to me. To some extent, Coriolan creates that effect.
I suddenly feel like I have to buy a bottle of Narciso Rodriguez for Him.
but most of all.. Nina Ricci Memoir d' Homme
Ungaro II and Santos de Cartier have that certain "funereal rose" note, in a certain gloomy way.
Obviously there's no such thing as a 'melancholy scent' in the objective sense. People here are choosing the obvious 'themed' melancholy (De Profundis) or incense (church associations) or gloomy packaging (Narciso Rodriguez)
It doesn't mean anything and proves packaging and marketing rules!
Essence de Patchouli by Perris Montecarlo, Oeillet Louis XV by Oriza L. Legrand (and actually almost all of their range), Ladamo by O'Driù, Chilum by AbdesSalaam Attar, Romeo Gigli Uomo by Romeo Gigli, Jasmin T by Bruno Acampora, Encens Flamboyant by Annick Goutal.
My current top five:
Etro - Vetiver
Slumberhouse - Ore
Parfum d'Empire - Cuir Ottoman
Hermès - Equipage (vtg)
Geo F Trumper - Curzon

It just happens that it indeed has a melancholic effect on the wearer. I noticed it putted me on a very quiet, instrospective mood every time I wear it. It really does. I even try to avoid using it in some situations.
Etro's Palais Jamais is somber and somewhat depressing. But nice.
Now I really really have to try Narciso Rodriguez for Him.
You guys got me hyped.

The Dreamer from Versace: what does this scent have that is so alluring and enticing towards the opposite sex ?
Encre Noire or Black Afgano.
Another vote for NRFH... such a beautiful, dark and murky frag. Perfect for a rainy day when you're in a sombre mood. I don't wear it often but consider it one of my all time favorites.
The first one that pops up is Ungaro III (older formula).
Current Top 5
1. Creed Aventus
2. A*Men Pure Malt
3. L'instant Extreme
4. Nasomatto Duro
5. CDG - Kyoto
vintage Je reviens Eau de toilette...sigh
I don't find De Profundis to be sad or depressing at all. It's a very calming, dewy, aromatic smell that reminds me something from a spa, than anything else.
Messe de Minuit is supposed to be gloomy, too, but I've never been to an ancient cold cathedral, so I cannot associate that scent with what so many other people suggest. MdM smells warm and comforting to me, very much like frankincense itself, which I have in resin form.
Narciso Rodriguez for Him gathered quite a few responses already.. I have to agree, pretty heavy stuff. Wear with caution
Zino Davidoff - the epitome of "depressing" for me..
Black Afgano - super dark and heavy, but this one I actually love!
Dior Fahrenheit Absolute
Horizon by Guy Laroche gave me this feeling
