Default I Could Do That Blind-folded!!!

    Hi, Knowledgeable Friends,

I have a question for you. Fairly often, based upon reviews I see on BN and other places, I order handfuls of decants. Considering that I like certain houses, even certain names of colognes (I know I'm weird), I want to like certain ones. For example, I have Marquis de Sade coming. I just really want to LOVE it.

Up until now, I have been cutting out several sheets of paper, writing the name of frag on the paper, spraying the papers, and scrambling them up, so that I won't be prejudiced. However, I can't stand it. I always look right after I've smelled one.

I have 18 new decants coming, and I'm turning over a new leaf. I'm going to test each one day at a time completely blind.

Do any of you have similar rituals when you test new frags, or doesn't the name/house prejudice you at all?

If there is a similar thread, I'm sorry. I tried to search, but it's hard knowing how to search this one.

    Thanks in advance.

You can have any kind of ritual! Smell perfumes blind-folded, scrambling papers up, or whatever make you feel you're doing the right thing, but the most important of all is to trust your nose.

Your nose is the most reliable parameter you can have! No matter what they say.

alfarom beat me to the new "Blind sniffs before purchase" thread- For the best since I am hopeless at linkies.

I have no rituals, but yes, it appears I do have prejudices. If the scent is from certain houses; I generally expect pre-sniff that I'll like it and get really disappointed if I don't. I also tend to avoid some houses because they are so freakin' exspensive.

On another subject- you have seen the thread about a New Orleans meet-up Nov 11-13 right???? You're already there!

I am so stoked! Let me explain a little. I started REALLY getting into frags about a year ago. Just had bought Encre Noir, and I was on a roll. Then I got cancer. I underwent MASSIVE amounts of chemo. My last chemo was Nov 20. I'm cancer-free now. Anyway, I say all that to say that, for the better part of a year, chemo made me like a bloodhound. I was even able to smell the smell that happens when the central air kicks on. (I didn't even know it had a smell). Anyway, downside is, I had to basically give up frags that whole time because all smells (good and bad) were cloying and made me sick.

Now, I'm on the mend, and I found out only yesterday that the next BN thing is in New Orleans! It's like God is finally smiling on me! Thanks, Knit!

Oh wow, that is terrific news about your recovery! Big Congrats! That also explains the " 18 new decants coming" part of your post- making up for lost time, are we? Well enjoy your re-entry into the fragrance world.
