Default Mailed! 5 Lilac Fragrances to Sample

Packages were mailed early today, 3/30/11. Expect them Friday or Saturday!

Spring is starting to be felt-- finally! Another month and the lilacs will start blooming.

I have 5 lilac fragrances to send out to those who would like to try them (USA only, due to postal restrictions):

    • Côté Bastide Lilas edt
    Highland Lilac of Rochester
    • Demeter Lilac cologne (not their 100% Natural Lilac edt, which doesn't smell of lilac at all.)
    • Pacifica French Lilac edt
    • Ineke After My Own Heart

I'm decanting these to 0.7ml glass dabber vials.
The Ineke vial will have a bit less juice as I'll be decanting from a lightly used manufacturer sample.

We'll form 4 groups of 2 members each.
First member samples for a week or two, then mails to the second member, who keeps the samples.

We'll fill the #1 slots first so the samples can be mailed tomorrow (or as soon as we have people who sign up); then the #2 slots.
I will need the name and address of the #1 members in each group (just PM me); #2 members in each group, send your name and address to #1 who will ship to you.

Newbies and guys are welcome to join us. Your reviews are welcome but not required, but please post when you receive or ship the samples.

It's okay if you are in another sampling group or have been in one in the past-- join us anyway!

You are so awesome. I think I'll pass on this one since I got a big pile of floral samples from Knows Perfume last night and my head is starting to explode.

Ha! I know what you mean! I got a bunch from a friend overseas the other day and today the Brecourts arrived.

But if you change your mind.... you could be one of the #2 members who keep the samples, and test them when you are good and ready...

Not looking to participate here, but one comment, if I may: I think Highland Lilac of Rochester is a "must try" lilac fragrance!

I agree-- but if there is someone who just wants to try that one and no other, they can buy a sample on the Highland Lilac website. I bought that before buying my full bottle, and it persuaded me! With shipping my sample came to $5.99 and it's 2 ml.-- very affordable.

Yep,this is more fun, anyway, and more educational than reading the reviews for me.I'll bet you know more than you think you do already!

I can't encourage folks to join this one enough-I've tried all but the Ineke and these are some very realistic lilacs. This group is a must for anyone who has a sentimental soft spot for that particular flower!30 Roses has quite a nose for naturalistic florals!

I'm curious about Frederic Malle En Passant which supposedly also is a lilac fragrance. Does anyone have a sample of this that they could add to the group?

claresauntie, I added you to the list.

matildaben, we did have a sample of En Passant (which, like After My Own Heart, is not a soliflore but does have a strong lilac note) with our Malle sampling group, but that is gone now.

However, Aedes.com now carries all the Malle perfumes, and they have a sampling program. You can order samples of any 7 of the perfumes they sell for $15 including shipping. Here is the link to that page: http://www.aedes.com/samples.php

    Room for 3 more!

    1. I will review Demeter Lilac Cologne; Picturing a Bouquet of light Purple lilacs soaked in a midnight rains in a garden.
    2. Reviewing Ineke A.M.O.H; light & peppery lilacs mixed with green notes raspberry adds a delicatable touch.
    3. Pacifica F.L Spicy and an assertive cousin of the Lilac family mixed with lily of the valley adds warmth to the Flower
    4. Highland Lilac of Rochester; Lilacs with a green note sweetness dries grassy.
    5. Lilas Cote Bastide is the Exotic sibling of the Lilac family just imagine mixed lilacs with Civet and Labdanum
and dries Plastic you get Lilas Cote Bastide.

    My Final Verdict
My Best and Favorite Lilac is Pacifica French Lilacs

    Ineke A.M.O.H 2nd Best

    Are the Best Lilacs

    The Worst
    Lilas Cote Bastile

    The Mediocre
    Highland Lilac of Rochester
    Demeter Lilac Cologne.

    Thanks for your reviews!

As you like French Lilac, I recommend you try their body cream in this fragrance-- it is very long lasting and projects beautifully. I also own the solid but do not recommend it-- it has almost no projection. I don't own the spray; the vials I sent out came from Sephora (I was there last week and asked them to decant me several samples for this group.)

I love Lilas, though the garish orange color is perplexing! It has a spicy carnation note on my skin and just makes me feel very happy. I think maybe that is my favorite, though not the truest-- the truest, IMO, is still Highland Lilac of Rochester.

As far as Demeter's, like the Pacifica it's a low cost lilac that approximates the fragrance of the flower fairly well. I like it better than Pacifica in the liquid form. It's a bit powdery but very easy to wear and lasts a comfortable 4-5 hours, longer if it gets on clothing.

I don't like the Ineke. On me it is soapy and screechy.

Thanks for letting me sniff through these lilacs! I actually sampled them twice: once each as stand alones, then once all at the same time. I wish I had throught to do that with the rose soliflores! It really helps you pick out the nuances between the scents.

Below are my observations. I added the two lilacs I have at home, just as references. My En Passant is only a tiny sample (eventually to be replaced with a bottle!) and the Elizabeth W is a bottle I've had for a few years. I really need to get decanting supplies so I can share samples in the future.

    Anyway, here goes:

Highland Lilac of Rochester - pretty damn authentic lilac. A bit of greenness, maybe a a bit of spice? Smells closest to the real deal.

    French Lilac
(Pacifica)- strong lilac. Dabbed it's much more subtle - sprayed it's heady, intense, easily overdone. I have a spray bottle and it's best sprayed and walked through in my opinion, though I enjoyed it dabbed- maybe I'll decant some. Confession: I spray this on my curtain sheers when the window is open!

After My Own Heart (Ineke) - Soapy lilac and...? It's light and airy. I don't get "raspberry" but this is a slightly fruitier lilac than the others. A little more shrill than the others and turned a bit sour after awhile.

Lilac (Demeter) - the Pacifica, but softer and a bit more rounded; pretty darned good!

Lilas (Cote Bastide) - this one is pretty soft unless really layered on. I wonder if that changes if you spray it (vs. dabbing from tester)? When applied fairly heavily, a somewhat spicy, sultry nuance is apparent. A dirty lilac? Who would have guessed?!

Lilac (Elizabeth W) - sour lilac; green underthing. Green fades to bring a more authentic lilac forward. A higher pitched scent than the others, though.

En Passant (Editions de Parfums Frederic Malle) - soft and fresh lilac with a watery nuance and a bit of yeasty depth. Not bread, really. Yeast. It opens the scent up and makes it light and airy.

The En Passant is definitely my favorite. I find that I tire fairly quickly of a straight-up soliflore of any kind. Adding a little something (that yeasty note and wet, open feeling in EP, the spice and darkness in Lilas) seems to be the key in my opinion. The Demeter was my favorite straight-up lilac, and the Highland Lilac was the most authentic.

samples will be mailed forward tomorrow.

    xoxo,

Jen thanks so much for your reviews! I'm still working my way through and the only conclusion I've drawn so far is that I MUST HAVE a lilac. I had never tried a lilac perfume before but I have found a note I love. Something about it makes me smile.

Wearing the Lilas today and I agree it's spicier. I think I will try decants of some of these so I can compare the spray vs. the dab. Thanks for the information on that, I wondered if they differed.

    Highland Lilac Rochester
Lilaccy, but this time I am getting an ''old lady'' smell....
But lovely right from the start.
I seem to get something spicy. Lots of lilac

    After my own heart, Ineke
Starts with a citrus blast, after a while the lilac comes through somewhere it's a but sharpish. and some soap?
I don't know, not my favorite...

    Lilac cologne, Demeter
Ehm, smells like cheap soap in the top notes?
Drydown is much better, but Ismell something synthetic, like plastic.
It remains, this synthetic plastic smell. Like this least.

    Lilacs EdT, Coté Bastide
Nice, a bit more powdery, but I had French Lilac on the other arm and that carried away all my attention.
It keeps smelling a bit sharp next to French Lilac.

    French Lilac, Pacifica

Lovely topnotes, very quickly a true lilac fragrance comes through, with something citrussy. Amazing, takes me back to the huge library in the nineteenth century villa of my grandmother, a small oak table with a cup of tea and the lemon she used to squeeze into her tea...
I love it just for this image alone, but it is a very attractive smell too.
Is a lovely fragrance in the topnotes, haven't detected lilac in the topnotes.
As it develops the lilac grows stronger, with some other notes, some flowers?

I agree, it was so interesting to be able to test these side by side.
Highland Lilac is the best lilac I think, But for me French Lilac is the most pleasing fragrance.

Realism is definitely not everything in a fragrance. Associations have a way of trumping all other considerations!

With Highland Lilac, I get a sense of cut lilacs in a vase of water-- somehow I pick up a water note, but it's not calone, not the typical ocean/aquatic note so overused these days. Not sure what it is, actually.

    Thanks!

I used to work as a secretary in the office of an academic department at a university, and there was one very sweet retired professor who came in to the office several times a week, and when the lilacs in his yard bloomed in spring, he would bring each of the secretaries a huge armful of lilac branches, white and purple. The office always smelled great around that time.

Ok, so I tried them all individually, now I'm wearing them together. I am surrounded by lilacs!!

Rochester, Highland Lilac - All lilac, all the time. I agree on the aquatic note, but it's not a lilac interpretation, it's a lilac for real. Love it.

Bastide, Lilas - more of a lilac mashup. I definitely get the spice, it's lilac after dark, in a spanish tapas bar.

Ineke, After My Own Heart - Lilacs at the laundrymat. I see a sunny day, a woman hanging clothes on the line, and her lilacs in bloom behind her. The funny thing is that it wasn't as apparent to me until I smelled it next to Lilas.

Pacifica, French Lilacs - This is the one my mom loved. Its still clean, but not laundrysoap clean. It has a bit of a spice to it. But it's simple, it makes me feel like one lilac + one spice = this perfume. It's not as deep as Lilas. I agree, this would be a great room scent, and I'd buy it just to spray on my curtains and wear occasionally.

Demeter Lilac - picking up something very chemical here. Lilac produced in a lab, by some kid who goes AH-HA! Success! Lilac!

I think of all of them, I would buy Pacifica Lilac for spraying on my curtains, Lilas for wearing, and Ineke for my sister who loves clean pretty smells. My niece could even wear the Ineke, because she's in love with perfume but at 10, my sister doesn't want her to smell or act all grown up. The Rochester is just a beautiful beautiful lilac, and though I'd love it every once in a while, I'm afraid I'd tire of it quickly. I tend to like something a bit more complex. This is what makes me think I need a sample of En Passant to try.

I must say, wearing all 5, I smell divine tho!

30Roses, THANK YOU so much for the chance to try these!!! I never knew how much I loved a lilac note, even though I knew I loved the flower. It just makes me smile when I smell it. I'll get these out in the post to inscents on Monday.

May I join in? I'm not an official member of the sample group, but I did receive a few of the these samples from the ever-so-generous 30 Roses.

I'm wearing Côté Bastide Lilas today. I just posted on the SOTD thread without reading here and how funny is it that I have the same exact "it's making me smile" impression that elizrj has? Lilas gives the impression of lilac scent in the breeze. It feels light and ethereal.

I tried the Highland Lilac a few days ago. This is true lilac, not overly sweet or powdery. I agree with the greenness and the water-y note. It does give the impression of a fresh-cut bouquet of lilacs in a vase.

I don't really consider myself a floral fragrance girl, but once in while I just crave lilac scents. I think it is because the real deal brings me so much pleasure. The lilac's bloom is intense, yet so fleeting, the delicate blossoms are such a happy color. They are a sure sign of Spring and they make us smile. What better reason to wear a fragrance?

Some months ago when I was mailing samples, a postal employee asked the question. I explained that I had samples that were sealed, padded, bagged, etc. (I described how I protect them) and she said, "So, then, nothing hazardous, liquid fragile etc." In other words, to her the contents were minor enough not to warrant being categorized as "hazardous, liquid (etc.)"

So now when asked, I say "no."

    Thanks for posting about mailing.

Lilac samplers,I'm enjoying your thread!I've been looking for lilacs myself, thought I'd chime in on what I've tried. My two very favorites are Highland Lilac and Lilas, two very different fragrances.I grow several lilac bushes and one of the best things about that is cutting an armful of purple and white blossoms and bringing them indoors. They look very elegant in a simple way in a clear glass vase with pristine water.HL matches that feeling and scent exactly. This one is my pick for a "fancier" lilac;will be purchasing.Lilas is an altogether different feeling-reminds me very much of working out in the garden on a sunny day, with the scent of lilacs and other flowers being blown past the nose on a warm breeze. The spicy carnation really makes this one something special;Lilas is such a charmer.
I also have a bit of En Passant, which is not only not a soliflore,it is not a realistic lilac. It is,as FM claims,an impression of a lilac. On this skin, that mainly translates to lots of sickly greens, unfortunately.Worth testing by those who would not be satisfied with a soliflore, though.Turns out, lilac is one note I just want simple and realistic.
Demeter's Lilac is my choice for an inexpensive lilac;in fact I referred to this one as "cheap and cheerful" in a prior conversation with 30R.I mean that in only the most complimentary way;it really is a nice scent for the price.Completely agree with Weimar's perception of this one as a purple lilac-purple lilac blossoms are indeed very slightly more powdery than white to my nose. This one captures that and it's one of my favorite things about it.I also have a dab from 30R's Pacifica French Lilac solid;it does wear like a skin scent in this form but it's nice.Very true lilac note that eventually becomes warmer with the beeswax in the base(I think?)coming through pretty strongly. Not at all unpleasant, though-in fact,I'd recommend this one as another option if someone were looking for reasonably priced lilacs.
Can't wait to see what the second round of samplers thinks of these;excellent reviews so far, everyone!
The nose wants what it wants!

I started sampling these today: here's my notes on the first two:

Highland Lilac of Rochester. Trying this one first because, when I told the Mr that I was sampling lilac perfumes, he said that in Rochester, where he went to school, there was a lilac festival every year in Highland Park. It goes on very fresh, natural smelling, with what is maybe a light vanilla note, and a bit of friendly green. Very naturalistic, not too sweet or cloyingly flowery. I was curious about the story of this fragrance, so I looked this up - it is indeed produced in Rochester, in conjunction with the lilac festival, is the only fragrance the company produces, and has been made since 1967. Half an hour later, it's pretty much the same. Projection is good. A couple hours later, it is beginning to fade but has not progressed any. Overall review: This is a really lovely fragrance. I am impressed with its naturalistic quality. However, I will probably not be wearing it again because I like a little development over time and am not a fan of soliflores.

Pacifica French Lilac. As soon as I put it on, I can tell it's not as strong as Highland Lilac. It also is a bit sweeter and has a slight synthetic overtone. I'm getting flowers but it's not really strongly suggesting lilac to me. A bit powdery. It didn't develop at all over a couple of hours and didn't last very long.

Late to the party, here. I think you have said it all:

Rochester, Highland Lilac - True lilac and long lasting. The sweetest (in a floral way) of the bunch.

Bastide, Lilas - I get lots of peppery carnation--almost a cinnamon note. The very, very deep (think long day at work) drydown is (drum roll) ambery on my skin.

Ineke, After My Own Heart - Clean lilac--a bit too clean to be authentic, but I would certainly wear it.

Demeter Lilac - The longest lasting of the bunch, but not as natural smelling. Reminds me more of air freshener or a cleaning product (I don't mean that to sound as negative as I realize it does. I would wear this, too).

[And then I had to retry En passant. It remains my favorite, That hay/bread/yeast--whatever it is--gives it a polleny, odd, a vegetal, not-all-petals edge that is part of the experience of smelling lilac for me].

    Thanks so much. 30R !!!

I emailed Côté Bastide to ask which retailers in the USA carry Lilas; they replied that it has been discontinued!
So if you find a bottle in any shop or on eBay, grab it, as there isn't going to be any more. I am thoroughly disgusted! Why is nearly every scent I come to love discontinued or reformulated?
