Default Serge Lutens Chène vs Fille en Aiguilles.

I recently got a bottle of Chène, and liked it very much. Of the Lutens I`ve tried, this is my favourite. It`s not too powdery-femi-sweet that many Lutens fragrance can be. I have read that Fille en Aiguilles is a bit similar? Which one do you prefer, and what is the main difference between them?

I prefer Fille en Aiguilles. It's like pine and incense. Nice! Chene is smooth and semi sweet and creamy. Although both are worth owning.

    They're not really the same.
Both wonderful but in different categories.
Its nice to like Serge Lutens, because if you do, there is so much variety.

I couldn't honestly say which are better, as they're both pretty excellent to my nose. However, that delicious burst of sweet, sappy pine is something I find unique to Fille, and what makes me love it so much.

It's Fille En Aiguilles for me, but I can easy imagine owning and wearing both. They're charmers in different ways.

Chène has just the right amount of sweetness that I like in a fragrance. Is Fille en Aiguilles sweeter?

Default Re: Serge Lutens Chène vs Fille en Aiguilles.

Fille in Aiguilles has more sweetness ( kind of syrupy up front ) and more powerful dry notes ( pine and dry incense ). Chene is more mild in both senses.

Gris Clair is considerably drier than either, Encens Et Lavande ( which I'm like mispelling ) is drier still.

If what you like is dry Lutens, I'd also suggest La Myrrhe ( dry aldehydic myrrh ), Un Bois Sepia ( deep, dry woods ), Un Bois Oriental ( nutmeg spiced woods ), Serge Noir ( spiced, smoky cedar ), and perhaps Boxeuses ( clean, plummy woody violet ). ALL of these are drier than Chene.

Haven't tested Chene but Fille En Aiguilles is fab. Love it!

They are both among my top 5 from Lutens, but I've got to give the advantage to Fille -- I find it more multifaceted, and the sweetness, which can be off-putting in many of Lutens' creations, is somehow checked by the sharp camphorous aspects of the pine.

Fille en Aiguilles for me thanks!
Is the juice worth the squeeze?

I could see them both appealing to the same tastes. Chene is dry oak, while Fille celebrates the sharpness of pine. Filles is also a bit rich and resinous. Worth testing, for sure.

I opted for the Fille over the Chene.

Granville is the non-Lutens version of Filel en Aiguilles.

    Have it on today.

Starts out lemony but its all pine & woody now.

Seems like most of you prefer Fille over Chène. I like Chène VERY much, so if you think Fille is better, I will definitively check it out. Sample is on the way ;-)

In my opinion - no. It shares a resinous quality with some ambers ( Ambre Sultan, Ambre 115 ) but it's not ambery at all.

Think of the globes of sap that drip from coniferous trees. It smells a lot like that.

If you enjoy the smell of a pineforest, would FeA be a good choice? Would you get a walk-in-a-pine-forest-illusion from it, or is the pine more sweet than fresh? Is it somewhat comparable to Burberry London?

No! not fresh. Like walking in the Alpine or Black Forrest woods.

Ok, I really didn't mean fresh like a airfreshener kind of fresh. I guess I meant to ask if it was cloying/sickly sweet?

Nope not cloying or sickly sweet. Very resinous and reminiscent of a forest.

    You should try it.

I prefer Chene. Fille En Aiguilles reminds me too much of my of days climbing and removing large pine trees.....often on above 90F degree days. Being in a pine forest in SC in the middle of summer is not one of my favorite places to be. It's very hot, stagnant and very uncomfortable when working in chainsaw chaps, hard hat and sweating to extreme. I must say that Fille En Aiguilles is an accurate depiction of hot dry pine needles. It's not glamorous in the least and I don't see how the name could ever fit it's character. There's no "fille" in it's makeup and the "Aiguilles" are strictly the pine kind.
Not my favorite Lutens, but it's still artfully done.

I'm curious - where do you find samples rom Serge Lutens? Luckyscent isn't carrying alot of them at the moment.

I really liked Chène when I checked it out at Oslo-Fjords place while getting some other frags. It really tickled my fancy, but I'd have to get a sample before a purchase.

I guess TPC have samples of all Serge Lutens. You can also get wax samples directly from sergelutens.com, or at least could.

I don't think they are anything alike, but I love them both. FeA I liked instantly. It took a while for Chene to grow on me. Somebody on here said that Chene smelled like candy to him and that was my first impression as well. I didn't get the oak until after a few wearings. At first I thought I had the wrong sample. Strange.

I remember when my nose was new (I know yours sure isn't, I'm just saying) I got my Musc Ravageur sample, and I thought I had the wrong sample. I was expecting this baked goods/vanilla thing, and all I smelled was old man cloves! I've since grown to like it, but I remember that feeling of "did TPC screw up and I got the wrong sample?"

    Fille en Aiguilles hands down

  37. #37

Default Re: Serge Lutens Chène vs Fille en Aiguilles.

The resinous presentation of the pine coupled with the frankincense and "red note/s" adds up to this one not being particularly evocative of a pine forest for me. It is very evocative of a Russian Orthodox church though.

Are both for fall/winter or will they work on cold/rainy summerdays too?

Fille is one of my very favorites. I just sampled Chene for the first time yesterday, and it smelled like Vick's Vaporub to me. It was a scrubber. I need to try it again and wait longer to see how it develops I suppose, but those top notes were just atrocious.
Irrbloss, I think you could wear these on cooler summer days, but take that with a grain of salt as the weather doesn't influence what I choose to wear. Controlled environments and all that.

They're fine IMO but you need to moderate the amount used.
