Default Looking for something spicey, woodsey, peppery

Hi! It seems like I'm somewhat of an oddball when it comes to male fragrances. Whenever I shop for a new cologne, it seems that everything on the market these days is sweet and citrus smelling, or reeks of vanilla. Personally I like things that are earthy, spicey, woodsy, musky. My favorite smells are black pepper, frankincense, sandalwood, and cedar. I love Tommy Bahama (the original in the brown bottle) and get compliments daily on it from both men and women. The only thing I don't like about it is that it could be a little stronger, and that I think the product's name is awful. I also like Givenchy's Xeryus Rouge. Does anyone out there have any suggestions for me? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

    My suggestions would be:

Gucci Pour Homme - Notes include papyrus wood, cedar, pink pepper, sandalwood, incense, tonka bean & vetiver - warm, woody and natural smelling.

Estee Lauder Brasil Dreams for Him - Notes include white pepper, nutmeg, cinnamon, patchouli, labdanum, jalapeno pepper, pimento and leather - hugely underrated woodsy, spicy fragrance - wears fairly close to the skin but lasts very well and smells fantastic.

Hope you find something you like.

Thanks! The Estee Lauder seems promising! I just tried the Gucci up in Canada and there was something floral that I didn't like about it on me, but the Estee Lauder sounds great!

Good recs so far. I'd add Zirh Ikon as an inexpensive choice for the kind of thing you like. Serge Noire by Serge Lutens might be a good wildcard choice. It's a love it or hate it musky burnt spice concoction. I love it.

Bang is worth a shot but I don't enjoy it so I won't be recommending it.

+1 on Serge Noire by Serge Lutens. Very dry, smoky-woodsy.

Also try Patchouli Leaves by Montale.

Or if you can find these
Tumulte pour Homme by Christian Lacroix - spicy cedar
Inside Men by Trussardi - coffee + teak wood

If you like pepper and cedar, try DSQUARED2 Rocky Mountain Wood. Very peppery, airy, and a ton of cedar.

Definitely check out Bang for the pepper. I'd also recommend giving Burberry's The Beat a try. It has a ton of black pepper along with a smoky wood base. (although there is a citrus/violet note on top, the pepper and burning wood are the highlights of The Beat).

Sounds like a budding Basenoter, puzzled by a world dominated by fragrances marketed toward "normal" people's expectations. You'll find that people here tend to gravitate more toward those genres and notes you've listed.

At the designer level, the Gucci is definitely a good example of all of that, though I find it a bit sweaty-smelling from the cumin (?). CDG 2 Man is similar but I haven't tried it. Dirty English and Zirh Ikon are fairly similar, and cheap.

I, too, was very impressed with Timbuktu.

+1 Le Labo Rose 31 - peppery incensey spice infused with rose.
+4 BANG - spicey, peppery and woody. The only downside is it needs strong application.

L' Artisan Parfumeur Navegar - a beautiful pepper spice and juniper incense woods.

You might really enjoy the Commes des Garcon Incense Series. Recommend Avignon, Kyoto, or Jaisalmer for initial tests.
