    Default Mens cologne recipe

Does anyone have any good recipes for mens colognes, made with Essential Oils only (no artificial ingredients other than alcohol and DPG), please?

    I found this one: http://www.aromaweb.com/recipes/menscolognerecipe.asp

which was pretty good. But now I'm curious to know if there are more. My Google searches have not been fruitful.

Please don't tell me to experiment - I have, and the results were disastrous! I'm looking for quality recipes that smell good.

I made a fougere as follows and a lot of people like it. It's not as long-lasting as commercial men's colognes but it's still nice, especially at the start. Amounts are in drops, but you can use them as proportions if you are weighing. Hedione is an aromachemical that comes from

    FOUGERE #2
    ---------------
    Lavender 14
    Sweet orange 5
    Bergamot 15
    Geranium 6
    Tonka 15

    Linalool 5
    Hedione 3

    Rosewood 5
    Vetiver 1
    Oak moss 1

Linalool is from natural sources, but Hedione is not. You can leave out the hedione I guess, and substitute some Jasmine for it.

Thank you for the recipe. I'm very grateful.

Where do you buy Linalool? When I googled it, I found references to Basil Essential Oil (CT Linalool), along with Thyme Essential Oil Linalool and Myrtle Essential Oil (CT Linalool). Surely these can't ALL be Linalool? Which one should I use?

Out of curiosity, how long does a commercial mens cologne last?

I bought the linalool at Perfumer's Apprentice.

You could probably use any of those. Each would give your cologne a slightly different quality.

Modern men's fragrances last for many hours, and even till the next day because they have very tenacious aroma chemicals in them. You can easily find out for yourself by going to any perfume sales counter and asking to have a bit sprayed on the back of your hand. It's really hard to get such long lasting qualities with all natural starting materials.

You might research the writings of Madame Elizabeth Celnart, a French writer from the 19th century. She wrote a good deal about homemade toiletries and how to make them at home.

In her "Manuel des Dames," there are perfume recipes that might have eau de Cologne, which was/is a unisex fragrance.

This book is in French and can be downloaded as a pdf:

You can try this formula ...

    20 drops petitgrain
    18 drops lemon
    12 drops bergamot
    4 drops neroli
    1 drop orange, sweet
    1 drop rosemary

    Good luck.
