    Default Masculine/Musky Fruit Scents?

Hello Basenoters. I'm relatively new to the fragrance game but have been visiting and consulting basenotes threads for a while now. I have used the search functions before I posted a new thread but can not seem to find an answer to my specific question. I've gotten my nose on about 50 to 100 fragrances in my search to find what it is that I like in certain fragrances. I think I have started to notice one pattern.

A few fragrances that I have fallen in love with are Dior Farenheit and Creed Aventus. I am not going to ask what smells like these fragrances because I am well aware that they are very unique, but I do feel like I enjoy things with a similar vibe. To elaborate, I think that I would enjoy more fragrances with fruit notes and a muskier or more masculine overtone that I must kind of smell through to get the sweet fruit smell. I feel like this adds some real dimension and layering when I smell the fragrance as well.

Other examples that kind of share this same vibe I speak of is Bvlgari Black with its interesting rubbery note overtone in the opening. However, this doesn't have the fruity smell underneath it that I would like.

I would really appreciate some other suggestions for a fruit based fragrance (not so much citrus) with some musky or masculine overtones. Woods or patchouli MAY suffice as a masculine overtone, but I will let you be the judges of whether the fragrance you suggest has a similar vibe to what I described.

    Thanks!

Try and sample Etienne Aigner's Statement for Men. You may find it interesting.

Thanks for the suggestions alfarom. Breath of God sounds like it is closest to what I would be looking for. I like smoky and leather notes, those may give fruits more of a masculine edge to it.

To some of the excellent suggestions, I would add Visa (fruit and leather) or Knize Ten (leather with some fruit). In Visa, the fruit is dominant on a leather base, in Knize Ten, the leather comes first, but there are some berries underneath. Serge Lutens has some sweet leathers as well (Cuir Mauresque, Boxeuse, Sarrasins).

In the wood + fruit + musk, M7 is wood plus a cherry syrup note.

I love Breath of God. But the fruit I get is more of a strange citrusy gum candy, almost in the style as Oyedo, very weird. The stick has more of this fresh note, the smoke is released only when the body gets very warm. The perfume has more smoke.

I have a sample of M7 and Egoiste and neither of them really do anything for me. They aren't terrible but not what I'm looking for M7 is a little too woody and I'm not much of a fan of cherry. I tend to like Pineapple, Apple, and Bergamot consistently in fragrances. I am don't find woods to be aversive, but I don't think that wood as an overtone will give me that same vibe that I was describing earlier. I think smokiness, leather, and musk may be more of what I would like to veil the fruit undertone.

BTW thank you everyone for your suggestions thus far.

    Especially this.

Also L'Anarchiste - lots of orange and cedar, with civilized musk base notes.

Maybe Lacoste Pour Homme is worth taking a look at if you haven't already. It has a bright fruity, citrusy opening a bit of wodiness and a lot of depth and richness with the vanilla and rum in the base. But the fruits don't dissappear at anytime and is lasts a long time as well...

I've read in other threads that Bond 9 Riverside Drive and Baldinini Man may have an Aventus type of vibe to it. Anyone have an opinion on that?

Looks like I may have to check Bahiana out as well.

I second l'Anarchiste, it has a spiced apple pie vibe in the opening and a very musky drydown.

Also, try Bleu de Chanel, it has a deliciously juicy fruit note, and some have found it to be musky (i dunno about the musk, but it's a great scent).

I know what you're talking about with the hidden fruit note. I like that, too. Aventus is great the way the fruit plays peek-a-boo through the smoky and tarry notes (I have the less fruity version, which is growing just slightly fruitier as it ages - perfection).

A few off-beat suggestions which give the same kind of enjoyment....

Amouage Jubilation XXV - fruit in wood and incense

Mauboussin M Generation - fruit in spice and incense - a younger guy's Amouage. This is an overlooked gem that gets compliments. The older Mauboussin Pour Homme also has some fruit notes, but M Generation has a more pleasurable contrast IMO.

Givenchy Pi Neo - a fruity musk in lots of vanilla. Most people toss this one because of a few mainstream notes - ignore these notes if you don't like them, and find pleasure in the fruit and musk coming from a single molecule (cosmone) - outstanding complexity in a mainstream designer scent.

Guerlain Homme EDP Intense - cleverly hidden fruit notes - very pleasurable if you like 'em hard-to-get

Creed Tabarome Millesime - fruity tobacco - very mild notes in both cases.

I was going to suggest this as well, but I thought I was already pushing it with Givenchy Pi Neo.

I agree - I think maybe it's a dirty vetiver or something similarly skanky like a musk that does exactly what you're saying.

Good suggestion, because I do own Bleu De Chanel. I definitely enjoy it. Vetivers are hit or miss with me but I agree that they can really give me that overtone I'm looking for. I actually enjoyed Tom Ford Grey Vetiver but some other vetivers give me a headache. Musk may not be the best word for me to use to describe the vibe of the overtone I speak of but I get the feeling that you know what I'm trying to articulate Redneck. I appreciate it.

I will suggest the recently reissued Fuel for Men from 1994 by Donna Karan. Check out the reviews for this one. If you are a fan of Fahrenheit and Aventus, chances are good you will like it as well. It isn't widely sold at the moment, but it is available at Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman and samples can be acquired at Perfumed Court.

The note breakdown and reviews make this sound like it is right up my alley. I'll add it to the list of things to check out for sure. Very helpful suggestion, thanks man

I can use as many suggestions as possible, and I will definitely try to sample them.

What about Cololy by Jean Patou, a remarkable chypre pineapple, maybe the only of its kind.

It's getting hard to find, but if you want a rare treat and think bitter oakmoss and sweet pineapple sounds like a winner, this is worth a try, and I find it to be perfectly suitable for a man.

I know that I like the smell of Chrome Legend, though I'm not sure if it qualifies as the same vibe as aventus or fahrenheit. Haven't tried Joop Homme though.

    Just as an update:

I went to Sephora today to go try some more stuff out. I tried:

Terre D'Hermes - Absolutely amazing, really "WOWed" me.
D&G Pour Homme - Really liked this one as well. Smells super clean.
Boss Bottled 6 - Really didn't like it much, had a syrupy scent that I don't like.
Dior Homme - Very good smell, didn't think the makeup accord was really that bad. Not that feminin IMO.
D&G The One - Wasn't bad by any means but dont see what all the hype is about.
Dior Homme Sport - Pretty good, not sure if I want to buy it though, I get almost pure ginger.

I absolutely fell in love with Terre D'Hermes. Has a sweet yet dirty vibe just like I felt with Fahrenheit and Aventus. So I'm starting to realize that I may not be looking for a fruity musk so much as a dirty sweetness type of scent.

Anyone have any other recommendations for a dirty sweetness scents instead of fruity musks?

I love TdH, too. That has a mineral accord that is probably doing good things for you.

You might like the new Aqua Fahrenheit. Supposed to evoke lava meets water, so it may have the same thing. I like all these scents you mention, and Aqua Fahrenheit really wowed me from the magazine flap. Haven't smelled it for real, but looking to do so a.s.a.p.

What's funny is that after all of the TdH reviews I've read and watched on YouTube, I was prepared to hate it, but I loved it.

I definitely will be stopping by a department store soon, most likely later today to try out aqua fahrenheit.

I wish I had known that fruity musk probably wasn't the best description to use as a thread title, but I'm learning what the pattern is in what is WOWing me. Right now all I can say is dirty/smoky sweetness.

    Masculine fruit scents:

Geir --used to be loved here on BN, now we hardly mention it, fickle souls that we are.
Nicole Miller for Men--Original. Not the reformulated crap that lasts 5 min.
Le Roy Soleil by Salvador Dali--Check out the notes in the reviews
Quasar by J del Pozo---Aqua fruity with banana+ newspaper scent? Insane but good.

Tom Ford Black Orchid and Tuscan Leather (rasberry tobacco), maybe even Japon Noir (spice, fruit, leather)
By Kilian Back to Black (cherry tobacco)
    Hermes Voyage (juniper)

+1 to Amouage Jubilation and D&G Pour Homme.

PS - I think that you think what you're looking for is a musky fruit but it's not quite the best description since that's something else. Eg L'Artisan Mure et Musc is a perfect fruit and musk combo, but you probably won't like it. You're thinking more along the lines of leathers, spices, woods, etc with fruity aspects. Jubilation XXV or Japon Noir are probably closer to what you'll like.

I completely agree with you. As I started to smell more and more I realized that it wasn't specifically musky fruits that I liked. I definitely think its leathers, incense/smokiness, and maybe even mineral accords and the like that dirty up sweet scents that I like. I like vetiver in a few fragrances, but I haven't liked it as much in others. But I like a masculine edge to sweet smells.

Thanks for the suggestions, they look pretty good
