    Default Best Earthy Fragrances

I absolutely love Terre d'Hermes and I really like Tom Ford Grey Vetiver. I can appreciate Encre Noir but it is too heavy of a vetiver for me and gives me a headache. I'm looking into fragrances that are primarily earthy, but I find I like some green notes here and there as well. Based on what I said I like and what I mention as too strong for me, what kind of recommendations can you give me?

You might look into some of the Hermes Jardin series, particulatly Sur le Nil. Med and Nil both have earthy hints in them, but they are primarily friendly, green scents.

On the other end, Malle's French Lover is a dark and prickly green scent with a stronger earthy tone. It sounds heavy, but it doesn't really wear that way.

I'd recommend sampling Chanel Sycomore - I'm pretty sure the full bottle only comes in a rather large size. It is earthy, and like a very cultured, nuanced Encre Noir - cleaner, greener. I liked EN first, but after purchasing Sycomore, I don't use the EN at all! Oh, and Tere D Hermes and Grey vetiver are two of my faves, so our tastes may be similar. I now prefer Sycomore to all of them (and to my 20+ vetiver samples).

Oh... and dare I say it - high quality pure Oud oils are as earthy as you can get. There are three main scent profiles: Hindi - very earthy - even barnyard (or a full zoo ; Cambodian - earthy and jammy sweet mmmm ; and Borneo - woody woody woody - and earthy of course! Beware though, this is a pandora's box If you want to walk on the Oud path, I'd recommend getting samples first, and go straight for the high quality ones. A tiny 0.2-0.3ml sample will give maybe 6 wearings - and they can be strong!

I've heard a lot of good things about Sycomore. I will definitely have to try it. I'm hoping the woods don't bother me.

Perhaps I should mention I like some woods in some fragrances, but in others it gives me a headache (the super strong woods that dominate the smell). For instance, other than Encre Noire, the only other fragrance I've encountered that gave me a headache was Narciso Rodriguez for Him. These are the types of fragrances I want to avoid.

Also, an earthy frag that can be used in warmer weather would be nice as well, being that I live in Las Vegas and it is hot most of the year.

    +1 for Sycomore

    Also try:
Tauer - L'Air du Desert Marocain ... a very spicy, hot, dry earthiness.
CB I hate perfume - Black March ... I haven't tried this myself yet (have a sample on it's way) but I've heard good things

Both Sycomore and Route Du Vetiver are great suggestions but If you find Encre Noir to be too heavy I don't think you'll like them. I'd suggest Iris Bleu Gris for an earthy iris.

Two fragrances come to mind: CB Black March ( green, moist, wet earthy ) and Neil Morris Dark Earth ( rich, dark, smooth earthy ). I've never come across any other fragrances that are quite as earthy as those two. Neither are vetiver heavies like Encre Noir.

Iris Bleu Gris might be something I like. I like iris quite a bit. At least the iris in The Dreamer and Dior Homme.

Rocky Mountain Woods is a nice fragrance and I DO like it but it isn't the kind of earthy that I'm referring to. By earthy I don't necessarily mean woody.

You def need to check out bois d'orage (french lover). I am a vetiver lover and just came across this recently. I am blown away! Very worthy of a sig scent. A very smooth vetiver being hovered by a soft menthol quality making it earthy and cooling. Flippin fantastic!!!

this is actually a great suggestion.

I wonder if it is the cypress in encre noire that you find heavy.
    earthy scents are usually dense.

If you like iris, Iris Bleu Gris is also a good suggestion.

Patchouli, oud and mitti attar (esp. in vetiver oil) are the best earthy stuff that I like. Though, they too are quite dense.

Maybe a straight on fougere? Fragrances of Ireland - Patrick could be it.

I'll second Sycomore, but you might also want to check out Etro's Patchouly or Hermès's Eau de Gentiane Blanche. Both are great - the Hermès is earthy in a very green and dry way, while the Etro is deeper, less minimalist, and smells like autumn soil and dry leaves.

Voleur de Rose. I have it on right now. Smells like a non-Chanel coromandel.

If you like the bergamot/cedar vibe of Terre d'Hermes, you might also check into other cedar frags.

Galbanum is the eo that gives earth and mowed-grass like notes to blends so you might as well check scents with this eo listed. Here is what BN's data base lists as those having galbanum:
