Prada Infusion D'iris.
I really like Dior Homme and Dior Homme Intense, but don't like their much-discussed makeupy/lipsticky note. Are there any other Iris-based fragrances for men that are similar, but without the lipstick note?
Prada Infusion D'iris.
It's the iris that is used in womens makeup that gives you the lipstick vibe. Maybe its best to look for similar fragrances without the iris. For me one way to improve Dior Homme Intense would be to remove the iris and add a touch of musk while amping up the vanille. I would like that a lot.
Well, I like DH and DHI quite a lot . . . but I really don't like Musc Ravageur. Not at all. I might try the Prada scent referenced above.

Iris bleu Gris
My reference iris:
Iris silver mist
I hope member CPK says something here. He loves iris.
Prada infusion d'homme is an iris based scent for men. It's similar to Prada's infusion d'iris but with more bitterness. I don't know, but I think what you call the "makeup" note in Dior Homme might actually be the Iris. You will learn to love it once you get over the association which is arbitrary.
Hedonist has some great suggestions. For a woodier iris, make sure you get the Different Company's Bois d'Iris. Personally, I prefer the one from Vancleef & Arpels, which is definitely more floral, less earthy and root-y, more smooth. But if you're trying to find one a little more "butch", it's TDC.
I haven't tried DH Intense, but I've found that a nice alternative to the original is Divine's L'homme de Coeur. Instead of opening on that intense makeup-y iris note it starts with bright citrus, and the iris comes creeping in a bit later. But the heart and drydown are quite similar on my skin.
You need to try Power by Kenzo
I think if a scent was "like" Dior Homme, it would have some of that same lipstick vibe.
I have Prada Infusion which is an iris scent but it doesn't smell much like DH. Quite soapy.

I'd suggest Iris Bleu Gris, Iris de Nuit, and Bois d'Iris.
I never tried it but people recommended it to me before:
Divine - L'Homme de Coeur
The best Iris based fragrance anywhere is Perfect Night by Bella Bellisimo. Dried and hung iris root gives it a slightly dirty feel to it in what is frankly one of the best niche fragrances I have smelled in a very very long time. Exquisite.
In a world where people smell bad, it is the personal responsibility of every Basenoter to improve the world one SotD at a time...
I fully second Prada Infusion D'iris
You already had quite a few great suggestions. I fully second Iris Blue Gris, Iris Silver Mist and L'Homme De Coeur (one of my fovourite but IMO the lipstick note is there). I'd also suggest Carthusia 1681 for an understated yet extremely rifened iris/incense combo.
@Hedonist: I tested La Femme Bleue at Armani. It's quite disappointing. Messy, ostentately rich, unnecessarely opulent. It sells for 600 bucks!!! Have you tried it Saif?
No one has mentioned 28 la pausa. perhaps it is a bit feminine but very wearable and quite beautiful.
I associate Dior Homme with a very smooth, clean, cool-smelling iris note. Both the Prada Irises ( Infusion d'Homme; Infusion d'Iris ) fit the bill and are a bit less make-up-y than the Dior. The iris in Cuir Ottoman is another relative, somewhat fuller and richer than Dior Homme and the Pradas, with leather.
Venturing into rather different territory, Dior's Bois d'Argent is a dry, powdery, woody-honeyed iris interpretation. Iris Taizo leans farther still into woody territory, with Cuir d'Iris adding some leather and cocoa. Iris Bleu Gris is soapy and bright. Bois d'Iris is apple-tinted and green.
There's a reason Iris Silver Mist is famous, but it's as different from Dior Homme as could be: a rugged, rooty, spicy, damp, medicinal iris.
The lipstick note features prominently, to my nose, in La Pausa and ( unsurprisingly ) Lipstick Rose.
There's a lot of variety among fragrances under the iris umbrella; I've sampled about twenty and many of them were not alike at all. Just keep sampling and exploring!
I would suggest Eau de Gentiane Blanche, by Hermés. Flowery and lots of iris in an earthy aspect.
I would suggest sampling Chanel No. 19--- I wouldn't say it smells anything like Dior Homme, but you can certainly see the influence No. 19 has on it, perhaps they share a similar DNA.
I think the richness of Dior Homme has some resemblance with the thick texture of Iris Bleu Gris. The former is more gourmand, the latter more green.
