Default New Fragrance: Etat Libre d'Orange - Philippine Houseboy

    From minifroufrou.com:

Independent perfume house Etat Libre d'Orange will launch a new unisex perfume from June 2011 called Philippine Houseboy. It will be signed by perfumer Ralf Schwieger of Mane Creations for whom it will be the first collaboration with the brand. The teaser-announcement is somewhat allusive and cryptic, as it should be...

But there are familiar echoes as the new creation is in line with the interest in erotica of the house. Ralf Schwieger is known in particular for his opuses for Frédéric Malle Editions de Parfums, Lipstick Rose, Hermès Eau des Merveilles and YSL Baby Doll. More recently he authored Orange Sanguine (2010) for Atelier Cologne.

"As an awkward Prelude to Ralf Schwieger ‘s erotic Vision of PHILIPPINE HOUSEBOY, Son of God and Citrus, the new fragrance to be launched in June 2011, Etat Libre d’Orange is now housing a Totem of the Guardian of Saliency cornered between rue des Archives.

An authentic Guide for an Olfactory Cruise on the South Pacific Ocean…."

From Grain de Musc i July: The flamboyantly-named Philippine Houseboy by État Libre d’Orange, a combination of lime, cilantro, steamed rice and a suede accord by Ralph Schwieger, announced for June, has been put off as it is still under development.

From what I learned watching Boogie Nights, Philippine Houseboys are known to walk around the house tossing off lit firecrackers indiscriminately...

Strange name for a fragrance IMO.

It's a bit too self-consciously outré, but on the other I do appreciate the way they take the piss of the ever present pretentiousness in so much of fragrance marketing/names.
Still, this will be a really though one for the occasions when people ask you what you're wearing...

They replied like this when I inquired about it recently:

Philippine Houseboy is due to be launched at the month of September. The fragrance has been created by Mane’s Ralf Schwieger, who decided to enhance the lime and grilled rice notes for quite an ambiguous “clean-dirty / virginal-sensual” result…

We are sure your nose and you will like it!

Im from the UAE where there is a HUGE Philipino workforce.
Heck I grew up with a Philipino housemaid (lady) all my life.

There is definitely a homosexual vibe to this.
Philipino houseboys tend to be homosexual.

ROTFL! That would be too funny! I have enough trouble with French names when people ask what I am wearing.

As for any homosexual inference for PH, this is old hat for ELDO. Just look at their Tom of Finland. You can't get more obvious than that: marketing, box and all. It's actually a nice, fresh leather scent.

I am not offended by the silliness of ELDO. I could easily be offended by the crude imagery and names of Secretions Magnifique, Putain des Palaces, Fat Electrician, Je Suis Un Homme, or Don't Get Me Wrong, Baby (and you know the rest of the name!).

I don't like the Tom of Finland name either, though the scent itself is enjoyable. I just don't see why a country's name has to be involved. What next? 'American Bigot'? 'French Whore'??

My sister-in-law is from the Philippines and was kept as a slave in London for a number of years. Her 'employer' was eventually prosecuted for imprisoning her - and this state of affairs is by no means uncommon in the UK. So I've got to say that the name of this frag strikes me as being - to put it mildly - in very poor taste.

I suppose they realized this would get them into some serious trouble. It was an entirely tasteless choice in view of the de facto slavery / sexual exploitation issues connected with Asian house servants.

btw.: "Tom of Finland" is the actual name of the artist the fragrance is named for, so no derision of finnish persons was intended.

I generally don't mind ELDO fragrance names ( though ''Hotel Whore'' and Delicious Closet Queen were sleazy and made light of both subjects ), but I agree Philippine Houseboy is in rather poor taste.

I've known only about four houseboys in my lifetime, and all occupied an uncomfortable position somewhere between prostitute and domestic servant, and none of them would be doing it if they didn't have to for financial reasons. I don't mind toying with adult or sexual themes in fragrance, but Philippine Houseboy, well, it reeks of third-world exploitation.

To be fair to Tom Of Finland, it's an actual artist's nickname referencing a particular person not a reference to anything Finnish in general, and was done in cohorts with people showing his work. ( Though I'm tempted to put "artist'' in quotation marks given his rather caricature-like male figures. )

Suga & t_g_l, thanks for the clarification on ToF. I suppose if they name a fragrance Pacman of Phillipines, we could expect a scent with plenty of explosive power!

  30. #30

Default Re: New Fragrance: Etat Libre d'Orange - Philippine Houseboy

Let's hope they change their minds and change the name. It is offensive in an indefensible way, deriding people who are in a dire position, and is some cases being sexually exploited.

I think they should just call it Facking French Poseur, that would describe EldO very well, in fact it should be their signature scent!

I have an idea that ELDO's achingly hip ironic schtick will end up becoming a handicap for them. Non-stop irony eventually just turns into a kind of poisonous despair.

Yep! While I quite appreciate Eldo's fragrances, this time (and a few others) they crossed the border of vulgarity. Fail!

    Way more than an artist:

"Touko Laaksonen, best known by his pseudonym Tom of Finland (8 May 1920 – 7 November 1991) was a Finnish artist notable for his stylized androerotic and fetish art and his influence on late twentieth century gay culture. He has been called the "most influential creator of gay pornographic images" by cultural historian Joseph W. Slade." Link

Visible signs of his influence: Dore Alley and Folsom Street Fairs.

Thanks for clarifying what this is. Sorry i didnt know there was no sarcasm/joking allowed. Isnt bringing up " de facto slavery / sexual exploitation issues connected with Asian house servants" a political topic also? How is what i said any less appropriate that that?

I don't think there is anything wrong w the name. I think it is geared toward people who will think it is cheeky. Like hint hint nudge nugde. It is hard to make me fake offended though.

I can also see no reason to imagine why someone from the Philippines who has worked in this kind of role would by necessity not be interested in perfumes. But even if that were so, taking the piss out of people is wrong even if no one from the group you're ridiculing calls you up on it.

There is such a thing as the "succes de scandale." ("A success from scandal." In other words, any press is good press, even bad press.) ELDO are trying to push the envelope.

If one really wants to be offended, there is something offensive about each and every one of the ELDO scents. The solution: just don't buy them or wear them.

I think I will try PH.

I happen to like Tom of Finland, Delicious Closet Queen, and Jasmin et Cigarette.
