    Default Vetiver: After Encre Noir..What?

    Hello there,
I am relatively new to the world of fragrances, especially to the vetivers. I have been told by many that Encre Noir, which I like, is a good introduction to this category. If this is only a good introduction, which one is the best out there??
Bear in mind that I am 25 yo and not a big fan of those old-style ones.
    Thanks very much

It´s a matter of taste, of course. I´d recommend trying Sycomore, Vetiver Extraordinaire, Vettiveru, Fat Electrician and Itasca as a starting point for your vetiver-journey.

There is no best, just what you prefer. Vetiver Tonka is definitely worth sampling IMO. Grey Vetiver has a good reputation as well.

If you like Encre Noir, you should check out some hardcore vetivers like Lorenzo Villoresi Vetiver, MPG Route du Vetiver (although I've heard mixed reports about the reformulation) and Profumum Fumidus. This last one might be a bit much for somebody who has just gotten into fragrances; it's an extreme scent and expensive. I really like Givenchy Vetyver, but it might be of the "old-style" you refer to.

I've really been into La Collection Privée Christian Dior Vetiver lately. It could very well become my vetiver benchmark.

Eccentric 03 might suit you. I second vetiver tonka and will throw in original vetiver.
Is the juice worth the squeeze?

Grey Vetiver by Tom Ford is very very nice.
But its too much subtle for my tastes

A cheapo, and maybe more of a "sports vetiver" is Story by Paul Smith. Vetiver and grapefruit, I just think it's such a sunny and cheerful scent.

    SANTA MARIA NOVELLA VETIVER
Have I told you about the scent of jasmine? Have I spoken about the smell of the sea? The earth is scented. And I perfume myself to enhance what I am. That's why I can not wear a perfume that bothers me. Perfuming is an instinctive wisdom. And like all art, it requires some knowledge of yourself..."

A very crowded territory where you can have plenty of good options as well as some trivial ones...these are some of the most popular...

    Sycomore
    Route Du Vetiver
    Givenchy Vetyver
    Vetiver Extraordinaire
    Guerlain Vetvier
    Etro Vetiver
    Sel De Vetiver
    Fat Electrician
    Kenzoair

...if you want to go even deeper I'll add

    Laboratorio Olfattivo Esvedra
    Panama Millesimè 1924
    Fumidus
    Breath of God
    Sel Marin

you might want to check the reviews section and/or similar threads for more specific infos on each...

Chanel Sycomore. If you can get your hands on a bottle of Serge Lutens' Vetiver Oriental, that one is also very nice.

And I keep pushing the Guerlain Vetiver Pour Elle. Nevermind the "Pour Elle" part, it is a superb vetiver for everyone.

If you're remotely serious about this, you really must try Guerlain Vetiver. I don't understand how you can ignore what you call "old style" if the perfume in question is the vetiver. You should also try the flankers - Vetiver Extreme and Vetiver Eau Glacee (aka Vetiver Frozen)

Other than that, the limited edition Prada Infusion de Vetiver is fabulous.

Great suggestions all, but many of the suggested scents have almost totally different emphasis, and I would sort of catagorize them into:

    1. Dry, herbal, smoky: Encre Noire, Fumidus, Etro Vetiver, Route du Vetiver
    2. Light, bright: Sel De Vetiver, Kenzoair, Grey Vetiver, Guerlain Vetiver, Sycomore
    3. Sweet: Vetiver Tonker, Fat Electrician, Vetiver Oriental
    4. Green (not the root part of Vetiver): Original Vetiver, Guerlain Vetiver pour Elle

So it's hard to say what is the 'best' vetiver because very often, they are not ver comparable to each other.
