Default Any inspiring newbies around ?

Im very uninspired by the stuff churned out these days. Can anyone recommend anything in the mainstream, (not niche) that IS exceptional ???.......male and/or female fragrance.

Mon cher, I recently sample the new Elie Saab women perfume, and I must say it was impressive. A glorious and powerful feminine floral, heaps of orange blossom as it opens and jasmine in the middle phase. Something you would expect from Dior meets Kurkdjian. Elie Saab is a sort of Lebanese Vera Wang, I think they do bridal as main business, but chapeau for their first release. Go sample!

P.S.: i just browsed around and... guess what, the perfumer IS Kurkdjian! I didn't know, but you can easily tell at first sniff: the orange blossom is pretty similar to APOM pour Homme, but then the fragrance takes another direction. Still, it's the dense and simple signature of Kurdkjian. Repeated chapeau, if it weren't that loudly feminine, I'd wear it!

Are you a fan of gourmands ?

If yes , you should check Dior poison . It gets a lot of praise here on the men's forum.

Not a massive gourmands fan, but I tried the Poison line, well advised by Le Grand Duc, and I quite fancy Midnight Poison. I must say I find it fairly masculine too... love how it dries

Going with the flow here, since you did mention designers too .

This one is just fantastic, but givenchy were too busy promoting their "play" line instead : http://www.fragrantica.com/perfume/G...ise-11631.html

A lot of people are raving about Shalimar Initial. I personally was disappointed by it.

I did like the new Angel EDT.

I've tried a lot of the men's new releases, and would not consider purchasing any of them.

Very true, recent men's releases are quite dull.

I must say I liked Shalimar Eau Initiale. Sort of. You can tell they want to please a younger crowd, but it still keeps the Shalimar character, which is good. Waiting for the new Habit Rouge, weren't they coming up with a lighter version at some point?

    Somewhat recent releases I've enjoyed:
    Guerlain's Arsne Lupin Dandy
    Thierry Mugler's Pure Havane
    Halston's Man Amber

    One I haven't tried yet:
    Guerlain's Habit Rouge Sport

I think there was a J. Lo (Glow?) that I thought was pretty good. My memory is vague on the specifics.

The One Gentleman is an excellent lavender/spice over patchouli/woody vanilla. Far far better than the original The One.

Sadly, it has the same lasting power (about 20 seconds)

I would recommend Omniscent from Yosh. It has an exceptional drydowm(IMO.) Great frag.

Mainstream? None, I'm afraid. If it IS truly exceptional you'd probably have heard of it by now.

Nothing exceptional, but Prada Candy was enjoyable when I sampled it. As was Loverdose by Diesel. I can see most people on here hating the latter though!

    Of those I've tried:

Infusion de Vtiver (2010) by Prada. This is very good indeed, and regrettably a limited edition. I'm a big fan, and bought a big bottle to prove it.

The One Gentleman (2010) by Dolce & Gabbana. This is pretty good - but not good enough to make me by a bottle.

Midnight in Paris (2010) by Van Cleef & Arpels. I'm still making my mind up about this.

If you can find the Van Cleef & Arpels Collection Extraordinaire (2009) there are some genuinely good fragrances in that line-up; in particular: Bois D'Iris Eau de Parfum; Orchidee Vanille Eau de Parfum; and Cologne Noire Eau de Parfum.
