Default I now understand why Polo and Halston Z-14 are so popular

Keep in mind; I'm 18. The past 3 years trying to find myself in this big world of fragrances and really look out for the things that truly satisfy me has been one hell of a ride.

I always ignored fragrances like Polo and Halston Z-14 from the get-go because I thought they smelled "old" and banal, and that every dad and uncle wore them - even though I'd never actually worn them before.

I was contradicting myself, though, seeking out (and in some cases buying blind) rare fragrances like Balenciaga Pour Homme and Patou Pour Homme because the best reviewers on here said they were amazing (granted, they were).

So, after this long ride where things are finally starting to settle down, I realize just exactly what it is that makes Polo and Halston Z-14 so popular:

They smell good. They really do. Polo is an enjoyable fresh pine scent, and Z-14 is a very underrated (in my opinion) citrus chypre. Neither of them have really been fucked up yet by the reformulation bug.

All these years I spent trying to get fragrances that were unique, or rare, or had good structure or good raw materials, I forgot the main reason why we like fragrances.

They smell good. And that's always what matters the most.

I love these posts. I am also a fan of both Polo and Z-14, some of the best buys out there. They just smell good.

Agree completely. I think that sometimes we Basenoters get too hung up on originality or the latest trend or rarity or exclusivity or some other facet of fragrances and neglect the basic joy of enjoying something that just smells good.

It is so refreshing to have a young person get beyond the blinkered (and ultimately meaningless) "old man" syndrome.

Yeah man Polo and Z-14 are both excellent fragrances. I'm 35 so most of my generation grew up on names like Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein and other big designer houses. Hell even back in the day a Ralph Lauren polo shirt was $50 to $75 dollars. Having owned Polo cologne back then was a big deal because it was expensive, the selection of cologne was limited, and girls went crazy for this stuff. To this day there's a lot of older gentlemen that still wear this stuff and for good reason. Memories of youth and the fact it just plain smells good.
    My current favorites:

Bleu De Chanel, Creed Green Irish Tweed, Zino Davidoff, Dior Homme Intense, Creed Royal Oud, M7 (all versions), Chanel Egoiste, Dior Homme Sport, and Thierry Mugler Pure Malt.

Mozart and Chopin were often considered 'old' and 'unsophisticated' in their expression of music by younger composers, players and critics. How egotistical and blatantly wrong.

Somehow, the 'old' concept is not as readily tagged to 'older' great paintings, philosophers and leaders, among many others things.

Why is it then that great fragrances often are labeled in a demeaning way 'old man' fragrances or the like? Perhaps the authors are so entranced with their own present day experience (narcissism?--and ironically many of their present day picks will be labeled in the same way by future generations) or, worse, unable to recognize and appreciate true art in scent produced prior to their..ahem..maturity?

If you like the Z, you should also try 1-12. Also a nice green chypre. Similar but greener.

It's true, the old classics generally smell good. The same cannot be said for much of the dreck out nowadays.

I don't know Z-14, but I have always loved original Polo and still do. DH still has a couple of old bottles and I like to sniff them and take a dab once in a blue moon. I'll bet you smell nice, Grottola, and not like every other 18 year old. Good for you!

My theory is that defining a fragrance as 'old' my an individual is based on scent memory. Before I had my first frag, I smelled my father, uncles, and their friends frags, and at one time any frag that was reminiscent of what I smelled on them, I labelled 'old', fortunately I have gotten over that. Imagine in 10-15 years when our own sons are teenagers, they may perceive some of the scents we wear now as old.

Unfortunately, I don't quite care for Z-14. I also echo the "old" sentiment, but when I first smelled it I liked it. A few wears later, and quite a few sniffs later, I just dont like it anymore. Unfortunately selling it is almost a waste of time, as it goes for like 7 bucks on ebay.

Only because the juice isn't made from quality ingredients anymore. It pisses me off because I fell for Z-14 recently but yet again I was disappointed with longevity. It lasted on me for a cool hour. I would gladly spend $70/100 for a 3.4oz of this stuff made with quality ingredients.

I sold my bottle of Modern Reserve and bought a bottle of the original a while back. I held off on wearing it because it is simply so easily recognizable. I finally broke down and wore it today, and Im kicking myself in the ass for holding off. One of the best ever, period.

Z-14, however, I could never get used to. I love the fragrance, but it just never wore well on me. I'll pick up a bottle once every few years and try again, but always wind up letting it go. Great stuff, but unfortunately not for me.

I will always have a soft spot for 1-12 (my high school/college cologne), and liked Z-14 quite a bit, too. But I really do think they've been reformulated since their heydey in the 1980s -- having worn them quite often back then and having tried them recently, they now smell much more synthetic (which befits their current dirt cheap price points).

Polo, on the other hand, still smells the same to me -- just as good as ever.

Thats exactly what I was wearing when I was your age, congratulations!!
After many years and many different fragrances Z-14 is the only bottle I repeated back then. Even now I found one for 16 dollars and bought it right there, Maybe because of the price and the memories (many of them very intimate) But the fascination and enjoyment is still there!
Like you, I just like the smell.
I'm 43 now, and the other day after extending my wrist for our young (20) receptionist to smell, she said "what the heck? It smells like a sweet tree or something!" Lol!
Who knows, maybe thats where T. Ford got his inspiration for Italian Cypress?

I'm 33 and just bought a bottle of Z-14 and a bottle of Azzaro Pour Homme. I also wear Quorum and Havana. I don't care what anyone says about it smelling "old man", these scents smell great (like OP stated). The sweet candy-like and fresh genre of juice that has saturated department stores just does not fit my personality. I'm a blunt, opinionated, unfiltered type of guy. It's only fitting that I wear something a bit polarizing.

I think the reformulation has been kinder to Polo. Z-14 while still wearable is a little screechier and not as long lasting as it was. Z-14 and 1-12 were both great fragrances.

Aramis Devin is still widely available and belongs in the same family of 70's chypres as Polo and Z-14. I actually like it more than the other two, because it's somewhat kinder and gentler but still unequivocally 70's.
