Cool Modern releases with old school awesomeness!

I posted a top five on SoS's recent thread, but would be very interested to read which new releases you consider to have the richness and depth of yesteryear's masculine classics. I'll start with:

Italian Cypress Tom Ford: A modernised/sanitized Polo Green
Great Jones Bond No. 9: Paco Rabanne pour Homme
A Taste of Heaven By Kilian: Caron pour Homme on steroids.
Richard James EDT: 3rd Man Caron, but more wearable.
Invasion Barbare MDCI: It pays tribute to many old school classics, imho.

    Penhaligon's Sartorial.

An old-style barbershopper fougere with beeswax and a bit of leather.
"No sweet perfume ever tortured me more than this." Desert Rose by Sting and Cheb Mami, Album 1999.

Agree 100%, Sartorial is a modernized Brut, done with excellent materials. Exquisite!

+ 1 Yup I was going to post Sartorial.

French Lover / Bois d'orage, were it not for the enormous woody-amber clouding the old style bitter masculine.

Also Je suis un homme and Eloge d'un traitre by ELdO.

^ I really need to explore the ELDO line cacio.

The Malle product is a classical composition, but didn't really bring back any of the older style classics to me.

Yes, i didn't have in mind any particular old frag, just the vibe, uncompromising vegetal and bitter.

ELdO sells an inexpensive set of vials of all their collection on their website (or at least they used to).

Halston Man Amber. Packs the punch of an 80s frag, and smells great while at it.

Couldn't agree more! I have waited for a modern day Brut for so long.

Brasil Dream for Men (Lauder) is an interesting throwback - herbal, crisp, oak moss evident underneath.

P.S. Don't let the 'young sporty' imagery on the box / ad scare you off. This was a big surprise to me in it's hip take on an old school style. It was originally only at Duty Free, but may have hit the shelves by now.

Balmain - Carbone de Balmain, it has something very classic to me and it reminds me of the old Nino Cerruti for men.

The Acqua Di Parma Colonia recent releases are all new school cool with an old school vibe. Assoluta (2003) is the best of the bunch in my opinion, but, Essenza (2010) and Intensa (2007) are quite impressive as well. All three pay homage to their OG Colonia (1916) roots while also being decidedly modern.

One Man Show Gold - a tribute to, well, One Man Show.

    Musc Ravageur - Shalimar

Rochas Lui ! Seems very retro to me. I cannot really mention a fragrance that is really similar to. For some reason, I do think of Vermeil for Men, which is an older release, when I smell Rochas Lui. Its an old school woodsy scent.
Seeking: Bottles/decants : of Feeling Man, Gucci pour Homme, Essence of John Galliano, Nicole Miller (vintage), Opium pour Homme, Oxford & Cambridge, Concentré D'Orange Verte...etc.

Seeking decant/sample of Jil Sander Feeling Man, Cacharel Nemo, Bijan for Men EDC, Lanvin for Men, Giorgio VIP, Il Lancetti and other old school frags ....etc. I have samples to swap.

On the cologne end, I like the way Wasser's recent Cologne du Parfumeur echoes Eau de Cologne Imperiale in a modern way while retaining the old style overall. I'm seriously considering it as the replacement for my Imperiale. It might not be old-school enough for some, but I think it parallels Sartorial in the degree of appeal to modern taste while clearly following an older model.

Just thought of another one: Bigarade Concentree (Frederic Malle).

JCE playing with that classic citrus masculine thing that has spanned Declaration all the way to TdH, while looking back to the original Roudnitska work. It doesn't seem to get much press - my guess is because it is such a classic 'non trendy' piece of work - it just feels great
