Is there any scent out there that smell even a bit similar? Trying a get a better idea what it smells like without having to buy a sample. Any non-niche maybe?

Ungaro I and II counted out

Yeah Ungaro I II and III aren't like each other at all.

I think Caron's Anarchiste is somewhat like III.

Well it is pretty cheap if you want to risk it, I haven't come across anything that smells similar, but then again I found it pretty gross.

Just put one spray of eternity on your neck, one spray of cool water on your neck, then take glass of vodka and pour it all over your body.

    There you have ungaro 3

Ungaro III was created by the same pair of perfumers and released in the same year as Chanel Platinum Egoiste. To my nose they have a lot of similarity.
Just because it happened to you doesn't make it interesting.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

I wonder would i enjoy Ungaro III as i love such fragrances as Macassar, Antaeus, Jules , i like Zino and Kouros and Cartier Santos (don't wear so often though) - but dislike Yatagan, VC&A Pour Homme, Cartier Santos Concentree

edit: thanks to all for your valuable input!

I read in many reviews that is had a dominant rose note. I love rose. I bought a 50ml bottle blind.

I thought it was quite horrible. Friends who smelt it all thought it was nasty. Not a safe blind buy IMO.

Interesting. So it's created by Jacques Polge
    /
Francois Demachy ? Polge has created Antaeus, too.

I've always found Platinum Egoiste as neutral. I appreciate it as a well made, balanced crisp, clean scent, but i can't help it that it leaves me cold.. it's somewhat too polite and clean to my taste.

Would be nice to get one more rose scent. I don't have many, just Zino and an small old out-of-date Rose 31 that i don't wear.

This ^^^ and I found it to be more closer to Legend by Mont Blanc which also has the rose and similar to PE.

I get similarities from Zino Davidoff and from Versace Black Jeans.

Many thanks for your input. It's appreciated as always! I took a "risk" and ordered a 100 ml bottle for under 30€ from eBay. The seller was at least reputable.

I think i might like it if it's something dark and heavy rose sandalwood based, somewhere between egoiste platinum-zino-black jeans-anarchiste - the last one haven't sniffed, though.

Herrera For Men is fairly close to the original Ungaro III. I used to have both, but am out of Herrera now.

With your like list, chances are that you are open-minded enough to try Ungaro 3. No guarentee that you will like it. Chances are you probably will like it - just not fall in love with it.

Ungaro 3 is not for everyone though. The biggest problem with the scent is the vodka note. It is very strong. Everytime I smell vodka I get sick. (Brings me back to that nightmare hangover from last year's Christmas Party I guess) If you don't like Vodka, you WON'T like this fragrance. Plain and simple.

I've never smelled the reformulation, but the original didn't have a vodka note, that's for sure. In fact, the notes are listed on the back of the box as Lemon, Orange, Geranium, Pepper, Galabanum, Patchouli, Sandalwood, Vetiver and "Sensual Accord".

Yes the reformulation is supposed to be a lot worse - haven't tried it.

I didn't like the vintage anyways -- lots of dihydromyrcenol. Yuck

There are ones that are similar (to vintage U3) but they don't have the rose note. If you don't care about the rose note, you can try Puma Man (the original one), which doesn't have a vodka note but it does have some leather.

Not very close to vintage U III but with a similar vibe:

    Washington Tremlett - Black Tie
    Costume National - Scent Intense
    Azzaro - Acteur (preferably vintage)
    Givenchy - Xeryus (")

It does not smell like most people describe it. It smells like a synthetic, cheap, "blue" scent from the early 90s, which is what it is. Not good.

I'm curiously waiting for my bottle to arrive. In the picture the bottle seemed like a vintage EDT (no text emanuel ungaro at all), but didn't ask so it will stay as a secret until i'll get the bottle. I'll post an update mini review as i'll receive it.

......absolutely astonished by all the negative comments, (not to mention the references to a vodka note !! ???).
I love this fragrance and would class it as a wonderful, (complex) barbershop lavender fragrance.
I would say that Mauboussin Homme, (now discontinued ?) is quite similar.
Go for it. You will not be disappointed !!!

............sorry, I have made an error here. The fragrance was describing was II and not III.
    My apologies.

This is a classic. To my nose it is a formal scent. Rich and Unforgettable. Good Luck-

I think I have a new bottle and that's why I don't like it. All I get is the dihydromyrcenol. Smells like bug spray to me...

Update: Now i have Ungaro III (Made In France, 1st formulation) and i've been wearing it for some times. It's marvellous, i like it so much, even fallen in love with it. It's beautiful, dense, rich, but also very serious, dark and sinister. I read the latest review of it in the Directory. The reviewer had started his review with William Blake's poem "Sick Rose". What a great idea and fits perfectly to this vibe of Ungaro III:
The Sick Rose (aka Ungaro III)
    By William Blake

    O Rose, thou art sick!
    The invisible worm
    That flies in the night,
    In the howling storm,

    Has found out thy bed
    Of crimson joy:
    And his dark secret love
    Does thy life destroy.
