Default gift advice (male in 50s)

    Hello there,

I consider buying, as a part of xmas gift set, some rather old school frag for my uncle, who's in his 50s. He's rugged type, who used to hunt and likes tinkering with his cars, so gourmands and powdery/sweet ones are left behind.
The frags I can think of are:

    - Versace L'Homme (the one before reformulation)
    - Azzaro Pour Homme
    - Escada Homme
    - Zirh Ikon (judging by the reviews might too sweet, I havent tried it yet)
    - YOUR CHOICE apart from listed above

..and yes, I am quite on budget, so can't shell out for niche perfume.

+1 Guerlain Vetiver. They do a gift set including shower gel, which you effectively get for free as it's usually the same price as the EDT alone.

    Bvlgari Man by Bvlgari
The One for Men by Dolce & Gabbana

Both are available in gift sets. Both of these choices smell very masculine and mature, in my opinion.

If you can find it, Knize Ten, which is a butch but elegant leather. If found, it should not be too expensive, though it is not too cheap either. Bulgari Black also has a rubber tire note.

Jacques Fath Pour L'Homme would be perfect. Inexpensive, but very nice and "old school" enough to fit his age group. It is readily available on the internet.

I fully second Petruccijc's choice, either one from the first 3 from your list is just perfect

if you want real old school, go vintage on ebay.

    some suggestions:

bel ami from hermes (citrus leather)
    vetiver from guerlain (classic vetiver)
canoe from dana (true classic fougere (not the more modern aromatic fougere type) you will need a rather old one, a bottle with a white cap and paper label)
old spice from shulton (masculine oriental)
azzaro pour homme (woody aromatic fougere)

these are all role models of classic 20th century masculinity, and should be purchased in their original formulation, or at least something very close. they are all damaged by reformulation, with the exception of azzaro maybe.

look for the older bottle/package designs. you can google image them to find out what the oldies look like. and/or use the keyword 'vintage' in your searches, both on google and ebay.

    good luck!

One more vote for Guerlain Vetiver. Another good choice might be Polo Modern Reserve.
