I really like Rive Gauche - in fact I am re-ordering a bottle this week. Think it's a great scent for the office. Never tried Azzaro although I've seen it in the bargain bins.

Rive Gauche hands down. I think it's probably the safer/better bet. Are you going to blind buy one of these or will you have an opportunity to test them?

RG is smoother, Azzaro is sharper, so it depends on what you're after. Both are great.

I'm going for a blind buy, so I'd really like to know if you guys actually prefer one over the other. I'm 19 years old and would like a scent where people kind of took me seriously. I've been told I look old for my age and I generally associate myself with 22-24 year olds, so maybe that could give you guys a bit of an idea of what I'm looking for.

Honestly, I like them both equally. They are both in the same ballpark, but are different enough to justify having both. I've noticed that Rive Gauche is getting a bit harder to find these days, so if forced to choose, I'd say go with Rive Gauche first and pick up the Azzaro later. It shows no signs of going away anytime soon.

Rive Gauche. There's a softer, somewhat lush quality to RG that I prefer to the drier, dustier Azzaro PH. Not to mention the star anise in the opening....I remember the first time I tried it I thought it was the strangest smell, and it stuck with me till I got bottle a year later.

But I like both quite a bit!

I'd take the APH drydown but the RGPH opening. If you don't like patchouli avoid RGPH. Neither one is especially dynamic or complex, so neither is a favorite. Instead, I'd go for something like Montana Parfum d'Homme.

I sprayed Azzaro my right wrist and Rive Gauche on my left.
Well I aways going back and forth sniffing at both wrist in the beginning. They were always the same. Both smelled like barbershop, Rive gauche a bit fresher and soapier. Just a bit though. While Rive gauche retains the barbershop feeling till the end, Azzaro got more aromatic and got some animalic note. Kinda similiar to Kouros. Very interesting development.
I prefer Rive Gauche though. I just love the clean feeling of it.

Rive Gauche is the 'better' fragrance in my humble opinion (once it dries down) but both are great - if you can you should acquire both as you'll have a couple of real masculine classics.

Rive Gauche, but the current Azzaro is quite modern and easy to wear by young men.

Azzaro by a long Shot! Azzaro is for me the best male perfume ever created.

i found current Azzaro pour Homme much closer to Rive Gauche than old versions of APH. Oakmoss and musk were removed a lot (maybe fully removed). The citrus opening is very bright now, however longevity is poor. For me, the new azzaro is now like a summer version of previous reformulations... not dated, but modernized. I see now many young men buying it, which rarely would happen ten years ago, for example.

Azzaro PH is one of the first fragrances I wore back in the 80ies. It was one of my signature scents for many years along with Kouros. Then I lost it out of sight for many years until some time ago where I rediscovered this gem. I cannot make a side to side comparison. In my memory, the vintage was more animalic and more potent than the current formulation. But I stll find it one of the best perfumes on the market and I never saw young men wearing it. I only smell it on older, mature men. The young ones around here all seem to wear 1Mio and Bleu. RG is very good too. It's just a shame that they stopped producing that wonderful tin can.

The new version of Rive Gauche pour Homme has the same vibe of smell, because it has been reformulated by the same perfumer.

The original version smells a bit complexer, but there is no significant difference. So my guess is, that it is not neccessary to spend more time for finding some cans.

In contrast to Rive Gauche pour Homme, Azzaro pour Homme is worse than I thought.

Anyway, my vote goes for Rive Gauche pour Homme even if it is compared to the vintage version of Azzaro pour Homme.

Own and love both, but reach for Azzaro more often. It smells way more smooth to me.

(Know it's a dug up thread but to give my 2 scents) I'm REALLY not a fan of either. But RG is the lesser of 2 evils. And it can be good on a classy older man.To me Azzaro PH is just unwearable.

And I remember when we were older children/young teenagers, my friend Patrick and I were stealing sprays out of his father's Azzaro PH and thought we were coooool and manly lol. Damn we must have looked (smelled) ridiculous and clearly just like what we were actually doing: "Stealing father's scent". So even if it is atrocious to me at least it brings back funny memories in my head.

    Strongly dislike current APH Formula.
Azzaro pour homme L'Eau much much better...for my taste.

Azzaro is nice but RGPH is a classic. Easy choice for me RGPH, you can still find some 'tin can' RGPH on the 'bay

That's an interesting statement in the light of the fact that Azzaro PH was created in 1978 while Rive gauche PH was created 25 Years later in 2003...

Vintage Azzaro PH is winner for me, but Rive Gauche PH is near and Rive Gauche PH is better then current formulation of Azzaro PH.
