    I tried both.
I would wear PoL, but I prefer Paestum Rose that's sure!

Okay. But still I believe it's not the patchouli that I'm drawn too. It is that 35% rose.
if gender classification is affecting you then you should completely be withdrawn from PoaL. It not only has the word lady in it ,it also denotes ownership of the feminine gender.

About the 35%. Yes it's not a negative aspect. I'm simply pointing it out. I do not know how familiar you are with patchouli. Maybe you thought what you were smelling was pure rose.
Perfumes can be is leading. Look at patchouli 24 and and Purple Patchoulli. Neither contain Patchoulli.

Hmmm... They both seem interesting. Although midnight oud has got saffron in it. I'm afraid that might remind me of my mom's kitchen ; ) But I'll include them in my sample order.

Well I suppose if gender stereotypes had a say in my decision I'd stay away from rose altogether. Nevertheless, I would rather not wear the same perfume that the lady sitting next to me is wearing.

first off, i doubt you'll come upon someone sitting next to you perfumed in Frederic Malle or Eau d'Italie unless your social circle is that type. And out of the two, the lady next to you will probably be wearing PoaL moreso than PR. PoaL is more popular being available at Barney's NY where as PR is only available at Scent Bar and maybe one other place.

Oh I love oud. The thing that I'm picky about is rose. I have a very polarized reaction to rose: there are those which I cannot tolerate (e.g. Black Aoud), and those which I cannot get enough of.
Speaking of which, I just read some reviews likening Midnight Oud to Black Aoud. How similar would you rate the rose notes in those two? If it weren't for the quality of the rose I could have really enjoyed Black Aoud.

I received my split of Dior Ambre Nuit today. If you promise not crucify me I have to say I find Ambre Nuit a lot more lyrical than Lyric Men. Whereas Lyric is more of an Attar type of scent, Ambre Nuit is a chic dark scent. Right now I have each on one wrist. Lyric is very smooth and glassy, AN is textured and angular. Lyric is bold and loud, AN is calm and brief. If Lyric is Pavarotti in Nessun Dorma, then AN is Leonard Cohen in Famous Blue Raincoat. Okay, I got carried away... AN is more masculine, A LOT less sweet, and has a hint of Rose 31's sharp texture (Iso E Super?). It has a very good rose note. Plus, it is priced more reasonably.
But still nothing beats Portrait of a Lady

I really think the feminine impression people have with PoL is because of the rose note. As I have said on this thread before, I find PoL more masculine than feminine. I wore PoL on new year's eve and scored myself a gorgeous surgeon

Still, even if I found it too feminine, I'd probably still get a small decant to wear around the house. It is a beautiful scent.

I did a major rose exploration, and bought Rose 31 (rosy enough for me to love it!) and Lumiere Noire. I also ended up with decants of Rose Oud (beautiful scent, but I only wear it for myself really), and two new recommendations! - Dark Rose by Czech & Speake and American Beauty by DSH. Dark Rose is a very well-done Rose Oud with some spice, dark as the name implies and very good. American Beauty is a dense mixture of crisp rose, heavy spices, and patchouli. I think it's really great, although maybe not the easiest to wear on a daily basis. Tiny bit of a potpourri vibe...

After all that, I'm still probably going to end up purchasing PoaL. At full price, if need be. It's just too good.

Congrats on the 2 purchases, those are my two go to rose frags at the moment, along with noir de noir. Curious, is the comment above based on you feeling rose oud is too fem to wear in public?

No, it's more based on me feeling that it's too expensive to wear in public! I've only got a bit, so I pretty much only wear it when I'm going to be hanging out enjoying my scent. Although I did wear it to work today in honor of this thread. I wouldn't consider it too feminine, although of course it depends on how you perceive rose in general. It's a pretty rosey rose, complimented but certainly not overwhelmed or masked by the oud.

Rose Oud is right on the line, it is fem leaning but the darkness of the oud helps balance it out.

Is American Beauty a patchouli bomb? DSH is close to where I live so I can easily stop by and grab a sample, but some of her compositions use too much patchouli for my tastes.

Looks like I need to try PoaL too...

I'm very curious to see what Reza's opinion will be on Rose Oud. I think its a gorgous scent, it smells luxurious but i agree it is on the border of being too fem, but i still wear it and love it. I have a sample of Ambre Nuit on the way so i can't wait to try that one out!

Having read all the positive reviews you may have heightened expectations, and get disappointed. After all it's just a perfume ;)

I think it has more to do with the blend of raspberries and currants in the heart of it. Once that fades, it's pure, pretty, masculine-leaning patchouli/incense.

I'm sampling this right now and it's outstanding. I have Carnal Flower (nice) on one hand and PoaL on the other. Then I saw the price tag...well looks like I have some saving to do. The rose, raspberry, blackcurrent, incense I'm getting is out of this world.

I just tried this for the first time a few days ago. I was absolutely bowled over; it was love at first smell. It's so well blended. I especially like the tartness and kick that the raspberry and blackcurrant add to the rose. And the quality of the patchouli note is extraordinary.

You can get the 3x10ml for $140. That'll come out to about $47 for 10ml in Malle's original atomizers. Not bad, especially considering the strength; 10ml will last quite a while.

PoaL is an outstanding fragrance, and I could not recommend it more highly. It has balance and complexity among its notes that are exemplary. Longevity is excellent, and sillage is quite respectable as well. Granted, it's not inexpensive, but IMO it's worth its price.

Having just tried this fragrance, I will say that in terms of power per ml, this monster is worth the money. You could go through several liters of cologne before you'd reached the half-way mark on a bottle of this.

In terms of better oud-rose-patch combos, I can think of lots, even rather more mainstream ones like Black Aoud. This one did really not agree with me, but more so, came across rather blunt and crass.
