Default Looking for a clovey carnation ladened fragrance

I adore the scent of pinks and carnations and can't find anything which is heavy with this note.

    All suggestions welcome

Maybe Comme des Garcons Carnation is yours. It is superb quality, although a bit one-dimensional for my own taste, but could be exactly what you are asking for.

Hi Larimar! I dn't think the OP was referring to the color. "Pinks" is what some gardeners call varieties the dianthus family of plants- kind of a flat headed, variety of carnation-like smelling flowers

so we may turn her to the Dark side, yet.....muaaaahhhhh

Yep meant pinks as in the English name for old fashioned highly fragrant carnations. I'm not a 'pink' fragrance lover. Dark is what I love so I shall certainly be exploring Caron. I'm planning a trip to Harvey Nicks very soon and will be trawling Spanish perfumeries on my forthcoming holiday for Le Dix

I like the way Ava Luxe does carnation - Oeillet is definitely worth a sniff. And it's pretty sweet, but I find Estee Lauder's Spellbound to be a clove-y, spicy carnation fragrance at heart.

Here's a thread from a couple of weeks ago with more carnation recommendations -

Pinks are another name for dianthus, same family as carnations, botanically speaking. Vintage Nueva Maja by Myrurgia. Vintage Maja (not Nueva) also has carnation clove, but the Nueva features it more front and center.

Another vote for CDG Carnation-- this is the one that smells the most realistic to me.

Adding Etro Dianthus (beautiful sparkling carnation), Floris Malmaison (sadly disc., as clovey as it gets) and for a less spicy, creamy one: Terracotta Voile d'Ete.

Yes Belladgio but not edt must be the edp

Virtiol d'oeillet is more warm spicy and light on the actual carnation. I get more lilies from it.

I forgot about Guerlain's Terracotta Voile d’Été, that's a lovely scent with a carnation note. It's discontinued but you can still find it online.

KM's Scarlette feels very fresh and sharp to me. I also love CDG's Carnation. I love Dianthus, although it reminds me of expensive shampoo.

I want to add two other Carons:

Poivre parfum and the EDT called Coup de Fouet. Both with heavy carnation and clove notes.

I'd also like to add Esprit du Tigre.

The clove content, imo, is not as high as Poivre as it seems there is a good amount of Labdanum or Camphor but good enough.

some more kibbitizing: Dianthus are called pinks not for their color but for the finely zig-zagged edge of the petals, like fabric cut with pinking shears.

This October Ineke is coming out with a new "Floral Curiosities" fragrance to be sold at Anthropologie, called "Sweet William". I believe that is supposed to be a carnation fragrance.

I am NOT a fan of the clove-y smell of pinks or carnations. However, my sister loves them. She has Santa Maria Novella's Carnation-Garofano. http://www.santamarianovellausa.com/...nes/10050.html

Yep, I can confirm that there is plenty of carnation and clove in this one! I am testing it out today. Worth a stop by your local Anthropologie, if you think you might enjoy a spicy carnation scent accented with lots of peach and cedar.

I have it on as well, but I found the clove/carnation note to be significantly more subdued than I expected. It's not a clove bomb, by any means. We are starting a sample pass for this fragrance; see my siggy.

All I've sniffed is CDG Carnation. Was a little green to me. Like too green. I wanna try that Caron though. I'd want something deeper, richer than that CDG..and less green.

A subdued clove/carnation accord that lingers but persists. Just the right amount.

To answer my own question with almost 9 months of sniffing and education the ones I've enjoyed most are

    Etro Dianthus
    Vintage Opium Secret de Parfum
    Terracotta Voile D'Ete
    TDC Nuit de Jasmin
    Mona di Orio

Not soliflores per se other than the Etro.

Great to hear that you have found some favourites among all the carnations, Alityke! You have named three of my big favourites (Dianthus, Terracotta Voile d'Ete and Jasmin de Nuit) so I'll make sure to test Opium Secret de Parfum.

Do you detect actual carnation/clove in Mona di Orio's Carnation? I don't (but I'm terrible at identifying individual notes) and it appears that "Carnation" in this case refers to skin complexion rather than the flower.

I forgot to mention Lorenzo Villoresi's Garofano before. I did find it a bit too much (too clovey), though, it's closer to Malmaison than to Dianthus.

  36. #36

Default Re: Looking for a clovey carnation ladened fragrance

Villoresi's Garofano is lovely, but out of my price range at the moment!

I do like the CdG and the Caron Bellogdia is a little bit creamier, which is sometimes a good thing. Got nothing from Vitriol d'Oeillet or Billet Doux - maybe a dodgy sample?

The ur-clove-carnation for me is Lush's Potion solid fragrance, long discontinued. The scent makes its appearance in the Christmas bubble bar called Ruby Slippers, though.

I couldn't say the Mona was a dianthus more a floral but I did enjoy it and thought I detected some of that carnation spice in there but not as central as it is in the others. I joined you in owning multiple bottles of the Voile D'Ete

I second Mike's vote for L'Air du temps, but unfortunately it has been utterly destroyed. It was SO divine in it's day. Lorenzo Villanezzi (sp?) does a lovely one: "Garafano." I absolutely loathe most Carons, and I have tried to "get" them--they just all seem a wee bit much of a muchness for my taste: One doesn't want to embalm the room--and most all Carons do--This is rarely becoming on a man. ....Oh! but I see now....you're not a man! In this case, I highly recommend Bellogia. This truly is a "Grand Parfum," but definitely to be used sparingly. Best also in the extract form.
