    Jacques Guerlain, DUH.

Modern perfumers? It's between Annick Menardo and Jean-Claude Ellena for me.

Ropion is one of many I like. Hard to pick just one for me.

Guerlain --> vintage (though I appreciate Jean Carles's contribution)
Polge --> more contemporary (though I also appreciate Villoresi's work in the field)

Jacques Polge technically speaking is the greatest perfumer (when you consider his female scent creations) but my personal favorite might be Maison Francis Kurkdjian also, so +1.

Jacques Guerlain (Après l'Ondée, L'Heure Bleue, Mitsouko, Shalimar, Vol de Nuit, you just can't beat that catalogue, can you?)

Jean Kerléo (Sublime and Yohji are among my all-time faves)

    update and more explanations

Isabelle Doyen - for continuing the legacy of my favorite perfume house; for being a perfumer teacher; for creating lovely fragrances that may smell simple and laid back but when you think about it, she always creates original, unique and "natural" smelling perfumes

Jean Claude Ellena - very popular, a celebrity perfumer, a bit arrogant but brilliant if he gets his act together; compositions that are flirty and transparent but have a certain naughtiness in the drydown in all his fragrances.

Francis Kurkdjian - a bit play safe perfumer who always follows the market trends; when he grows older I hope he can develop more experimental fragrances

I will not mention some greats who already left the physical world. They have made their mark in perfumery. Sad that their compositions are no longer their true creations though.
