Default Vintage New York by Parfums de Nicolaļ?

just visited an old perfume shop near my house and found this frag.. i believe this is authentic but the bottle of New York that i see in BN and Fragrantica is totally different from this one..
i checked the website and googled for the bottle design but i haven't seen similar bottles as this .. i haven't smelled the "new" New York by PdN so i can't tell if the supposedly vintage frag that i found and smelled is the same.. anyway, here are some pics..

    THE BOX..

    THE BOTTLE..

    THE LABEL..

    THE BOTTOM BOX LABEL..
no great shakes but good enough..

If I were you I'd try emailing Luca Turin and Tania Sanchez. After all, he said he wore it for like 10 years. He might answer you. I sent them an email about 8 months ago about a discontinued perfume and got a really thoughtful reply from her. The address is mail@perfumestheguide.com.

What's strange is that, if it is legit, the packaging looks a damn sight better than the packaging this house is renowned for (not too keen on the bottle's base, though).

It's a tough one, so I'll sit on the fence for now.

Btw, what other niche brands does this shop stock?

Ah, released in 1989 - I never realised! That increases the possibility of it being vintage...

Do they have any other Parfums de Nicolaļ offerings?

Yeah, that is an old bottle. Definitely cool, though. Sort of reminds me of Yohji Homme. Enjoy it, nice find!

I own three or four older Nicolai frags with that style of packaging. I'm not sure it is the original packaging, but I think so. At any rate, it is certainly older than the current packaging. It is indeed legitimate.

I would get it if I were you. The price is cheap, the packaging is nice (agree with Trebor that it is much more attractive than the blah current packaging), and it might actually be a slightly different formulation than what is currently available.

But try it before you buy it. The scent itself is safe enough, an excellent but conservation citrus based one, but make sure that the product inside the bottle hasn't gone off over the years.

I own a recent version of New York I bought back in 2008-2009. If you save one of the old bottles of New York for me I can get it and do a side by side comparison of the vintage with the new and post the results.

That same shop also has Nicolai No. 1 in the old packaging. That's where I got mine. I think the others I have in this packaging are Crepuscule de Vanille (discontinued, but a great fragrance) and Juste en Reve.

Just to clarify: Citrus is part of the composition, the same as it is in Shalimar and others, and the herbal accents (mainly thyme) in New York can enhance the initial perceptions of the prominence of the citrus, but it's a rich woody oriental, and a spicy one at that.

And it has been reformulated, still better than most, but it's a hard, blurry, flat, compared to what it was (smooth, clear, plush).

I have seen only Number One there. I don't know how I missed New York! I thought I had scoured that shop pretty well.

Some of the Gazzaz shops used to have Crepuscule de Vanille and Juste en Reve in the old packaging. I also think the Hatem shop still has a bottle or two of Juste en Reve. Evidently Nicolai frags were distributed within Saudi Arabia some time ago, probably during the '90s, but for some reason the line was dropped.

I'm visiting the shop this morning and will get a bottle. I'll compare it with my recent one and report back here.

I've never been as keen on New York as many other Basenotes members are, so I'm also curious to know how the current version stacks up against the older one. Perhaps my opinion will change.

I've been wearing both versions this afternoon. First off, here's a photo showing the two versions of New York. I got the newer bottle in 2008, but it might be a bit older than that. I just got the older bottle today, and suspect that it is from the late '90s, but I'm not sure. Besides the very different packaging, the amber color of the older version vs. the gold color of the newer version is striking. Is it due to age or a different formulation?

Another difference is between the vaporizers. The vaporizer on the older version is much more generous and forceful than the one on the newer bottle, which outputs relatively meager spritzes.

And now to the heart of the matter: I don't detect any difference in smell between these two versions! I have tried and tried, from initial spray to drydown, and I cannot find any notable differences.

So it appears that New York made it through at least 2007/2008 unchanged from the late '90s, or if there have been changes they did not alter the smell of the fragrance. I cannot say if it has been reformulated since then, or if the older version being discussed here had itself been reformulated from the original.

this parfum saw too many different bottles!

i have the one on the left, around the same period, and i noticed how they put a sticker with an more expansive ingredients list over the place on the box where was printed something like 'alcohol, parfum, water, colorants' .

then i have something that looks like the right bottle and box in shape, but the bottle is frosted, has a gold cap, and the colors on the box are inverted (grey background, blue print). the printing is different, too.

and while there are differences in odor, there's nothing to mourn about; they both are great.

my guess is that new york fell apart with the new 2011 ifra regulations. the old version should still be possible to find. does the latest formula still have the same bottle and packaging as the photo above in noggs' post?

My box doesn't have the sticker with the expanded ingredients list. It says only: Alcool - Parfum

Fragrances typically get darker with age. I've got some older perfumes that are dark brown but still smell okay.

But who knows, maybe Nicolai just decided to make the color lighter!
