Yeah, depends on the frag. Ones that have a strong citrus component will probably have somewhat degraded topnotes after a few years. I have 30 - 40 year old ones that still smell great. My ~70s (I guess) vintage Chanel smells a little rancid for a few minutes then its fine.

If you keep them in their boxes at room temperature they should be fine for at least 10 years, probably much more.

Citrus begins to degrade as soon as it goes in the bottle. You don't even have to spray it and the citrus oils are already degrading.

Other top notes fade over the years. After a few decades, it's likely that 50+% of the top notes have broken down into other things which either smell different or don't smell.

The other components last longer than decades.

Store it in a dark, cool place and it will last many years.

That sounds about right. I understand that citrus starts degrading right away - I would say that everything does, just more slowly. How long does it take for citrus to smell like it's gone bad, though?

The funny thing is that my Chanel for Men still smells citrusy, but there's something else that smells off along with it.
