Default Van Cleef & Arpels. Pour homme vs Tsar

Which of these timeless, classical legendary fragrances do you prefer? I like both, but I think Tsar is the most versatile though it`s quite formal.

Tsar is just alright to me. It's cool and all, but I'd reach for Pour Homme over it every time. I just love how intensely gothic the scent is... It's one of my favorites, for sure.

Personally I slightly prefer Tsar because the florals are sort of subdued (which to me means less soapy).

Haven't tried PH yet, but have and love Tsar. Works beautifully in cold weather I might add. Very crystalline, green, a touch soapy, old-school, excellent stuff.

I was about to buy PD, but I cancelled my order on the fourth or fifth hour of testing. I just couldn't stand the inextinguible animalic castor I guess note that appeared to last forever. I recomend testing it well, as for me the top notes are really nice but later, the leather stuff (I guess it is that) was too much for me. I would like to learn others impressions aswell.

Default Van Cleef & Arpels. Pour homme vs Tsar

For me, Tsar by far (incidental rhyme). I've worn Pour Homme but just have trouble warming up to it. Tsar was a winner from the first spray. Very versatile and enjoyable fougere which I'm glad to own.

Love them both but only have Tsar right now which maybe says something. Must get another bottle of PH sometime...

Tsar, as a slightly fresher, lighter, more versatile choice, but pour Homme as an overall fragrance, even though a bit more formal and complex, but also more luxurious and powerhouse-style (all of these being significant plus points for me).

Both are great, depends on what you are going for. The regal vapor trail of a powdered wig? Go with PH....A green, mossy smoking jacket with a rose in the breast pocket? You are the Tsar!

Does PH really contain castoreum? It's not legal anymore. I guess.

Own both; PH in current (excellent) and pre-current formulation and Tsar in original vintage and both are very good to say the least.
Vintage Tsar is pretty different compared to current formulation; not in smell but especially in depth and blend as well as the current does not contain real oakmoss.
The vintage works like an edp and lasts all day with average projection. Smells like a real gentleman and is a green work of art. The current version of Tsar is gone on my skin after 4 hrs unfortunately, smells very flat and has no depth at all (when comparing to vintage!).
The PH is my favorite (top 10 even) though as I reach for it way more often and is (to me) way more versatile. It starts of very loud being a powerhouse but settles nicely as a beautiful flowery rose-leather scent that goes on for hours with little above average projection and 10 hrs longevity. It's probably my most worn fragrance of 2014.
Both are winners and worth owning if you like these kind of fragrances imo but they are so different from each other that it' comparing apples and oranges.

This is an old thread.. Today, I'm not a huge fan of either, but I prefer Tsar over PH. I really dislike PH. If I want some "green classiness", I prefer Esencia Loewe over Tsar by miles.

Maybe there is still some useful info in this renewed thread for 'new readers'?! (eg. bluemmb1 who renewed the thread and asked for more info)

I also prefer Esencia over Tsar but besides being both green they cannot be compared. Tsar is like the green woody, smokey, dark and mossy and Esencia like the fresher, soapy, vetiver-ish mossy kind of green.

@Oslo: taste changes indeed over time and maybe you think different about Esencia as well in a year as you only just own this fragrance, right?

Thanks for the information. Anyway I got PH this morning. Maybe what I think I smell in the drydown is not what I'm really smelling, I guess I have to look at it with a different perspective. 3 of your top 10 are among my favourites

Maybe pour homme is also sensitive to skin chemistry?!
On me it works perfect and I got compliments on how good it smelled from a friendly couple, at work from people I did not expect it from and my girlfriend also loves it.
It just smells masculine, fresh, little soapy with rose, strong enough and leathery in the drydown (I guess indeed no castoreum anymore in last two formulations) and it lasts 10 hrs on me. Lovely stuff of which I own 2 current formulation bottles (leaf pattern box) and one of the slightly less good pre-current (all black box) but still good and actually not too much of a difference between the two!

Tsar seemed too much of a stew for me without as much note differentiation. Also made me nauseous. VCAPH is a total classic for me and challenging too, with that soapy note in the middle. Took me a couple wearings to get it. Great powerhouse - really enjoy in the outdoors.

I own both in formulations that are about three years old, and Tsar is in my regular rotation that I wear to the office. It's so classy and makes me feel like a million bucks. I break out PH far less frequently. I really like it, but it's old school in a way that almost makes me feel self conscious. I will say that the last time I wore PH, my girlfriend sang its praises.

At one point it was PH (and I still think that is probably the better constructed fragrance), but these days it's Tsar. I can wear it anywhere and it always feels like a second skin.

First try PH. It's really nothing to do with Tsar. This is strong winter scent. Real beast. Tsar I find it more for spring - summer. In my opinion, of course.
