    Default Derby and Equipage

    Hello Gents,

I love Derby by Guerlain. It just seems to get better and better on me and I'm trying to get as much as I can of it as it's hard to come by.

I have yet to try Equipage by Hermes but have ordered a vintage bottle.

Could I ask your thoughts on these two fragrances? Which do you prefer and why?

    Best wishes,

    Koala.

Own and love them both...personally I find Equipage more "typically conventional"...

Have not tried Derby, but Equipage is one of the best classical male perfumes ever created.

Of course both smell different however, they both give off that smoky-woody vibe. I find Equipage more on the classic side whereas Derby is kind of on the modern side. I feel that Equipage is "heavier" than Derby.

I think they are very different.
    My experience is:
Derby has a deep woody chypre smell with a warm feeling.
Equipage has a mildly spicy pipe tobacco smell, and has a cool feeling.
(I've only smelled the modern version of these)
    Overall I prefer Derby.

Equipage is a spicier, more traditionally masculine woody chypre with a very mature-smelling tobacco note.

Derby is more of a floral-green leather chypre, although to me the chypre facets are so faint (especially when I factor in the prominent jasmine and tarragon) that it could probably be either a fougere or a chypre.

To my nose Équipage smells like the tack room of a riding school; I find Derby mainly smelling like wet hair.

I like them both and you'll find that they both probably fill a need in your collection. They aren't too similar in my opinion and I could echo a lot of the above comments. I do prefer Derby over Equipage because I find it more unique. That in turn could be read to mean that Equipage is more conventional as others have said and possibly replaceable by another fragrance. Can't think of one off the top of my head but doesn't mean someone else can't. Great choices, both of them, with very refined smells.

Never tried Derby, but I used to own vintage Equipage and I didnt care for it. I think the bottle I had might have "turned" though as it just didnt seem to smell right and only lasted about 30 min to an hour on me.

Derby is the ultimate leather chypre, crisp and refined. Elegance all the way.

Equally elegant is Equipage. It has less leather than Derby to my nose and more spice.

For tack room, try Cuir Pleine Fleur by Heeley. An elegant violet leather.
