Question Looking for a leathery vanilla for masculinity and playfulness

    Hello all,

First post. After a recent breakup (3 months is recent, right? ), I've started redefining and refining myself by learning to dress well, learning to cook, reading more, being more social, etc etc. Now I've got to smell good. Trying different colognes out I've discovered the notes I like on me, but haven't yet found the perfect combination. I've looked through various threads and even used the BaseNotes fragrance finder, but to no avail.

Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille sounds too tabacco-y for me. If it has to be smoky, then I prefer a subtle smoky, like hints of a fireplace breathed into my clothes, not projecting a sophisticated night out at a Scotch and cigar bar.

More specifically, I'm looking for a long lasting blend of vanilla and leather, perhaps even wood and citrus thrown in. The vanilla because it's playful, comforting, and therefore draws you in, and the leather because it roots the perfume with a naturally masculine smell. I'm not a fan of strong spice, so oriental seems out of the question. I don't like mint. I'd prefer to stay way from anything metallic and synthetic and too aquatic and aromatic. I'd like it to smell like a natural blend, and still smell manly and alluring. I do love citrus smells, so a citrus opening or heart is fine with me.

I'm stateside, and prefer to not have to hunt on eBay for obscure perfumes (I'm not opposed to it, if someone does know there's a perfect blend for me).

    Anyone have suggestions?

Thanks in advance, and happy holidays!

    I think you should try

    Bulgari Black - leather/rubber vanilla
    Knize Ten - leather, amber
Hermes Bel Ami: citrus, leather, vanilla

By the way, Tobacco Vanille isn't smoky tobacco. It's unburned tobacco. You may want to try it if you get a chance.

    Hey, thanks for the suggestions.

Hermes Bel Ami seems to be getting some love through the reviews, so I'll look for a place to sample it, or order a sample along with the Tom Ford.

Bulgari black on the kind of semi-strong side and the super-soft side Mip edp

    What is Mip EDP?

I'm reading throuhg Black reviews now, and there's a lot of love for it. It sounds like a step-above-safe, but not-quite-a-night-out-fragrance. True?

    Patchouli 24

It's not typically leathery nor vanilla prominent but it's worth trying.

Can I just say you guys are awesome! I've frequented all sorts of message boards --fashion, fitness, technical, hobby, sport-- and you guys are super friendly. The fact that no one is "go serch 4 it bro" or linking me to four threads with outdated information... BaseNote forums is --so far-- a great community.

Givenchy Pi is something I would recommend highly. Vanilla leather that lasts forever.

One hard-to-get: Le Labo Vanille 44,
and one classic more citrus than leather but some vanilla: Guerlain Mouchoir de Monsieur.

I have and love this one but I don't think I have ever picked up on any leather from this one. Guess too subtle for my nose. Vanilla yes.

As others have noted, Tobacco Vanille is not a heavy tobacco scent (despite the name). A must try IMO.

Also, i would suggest Armani Privé Cuir Noir.

This is so new in my collection it didn't even dawn on me. Tahitian Vanilla as a strong base and prominent leather at the top. I might as well cast my Bel Ami vote up above to the wind!

Huh? On fragrantica, leather has the most votes for 'Main Notes According to Your Votes' (http://www.fragrantica.com/perfume/V...aris-9685.html).

MIP EDP would be a great option IMO. And you can get it for super cheap ($38.55/4.2oz bottle) from fragrancenet (http://www.fragrancenet.com/midnight...mf/en_US/21724).

I suggest Jil Sander Man. Created by Thierry Wasser and Annick Menardo. Top notes are lavender, violet and bergamot; middle notes are sage and vetiver; base notes are cedar, myrrh and russian leather. Vanilla is unlisted but easily detectable.

Seconding Mouchoir de Monsieur. Also from Guerlain, perhaps Heritage may be worth trying- heavier on the vanilla, but still some leather in the background.

Thierry Mugler's Pure Leather is one you might want to sample. Synthetic leather and vanilla drydown.

Yep, MiP and Bulgari Black were the first things I thought of based on your description, with the vanilla combination. Agree also with Kagey that Tobacco Vanille has to be on your sample list as well, it's more vanilla than tobacco and just delicious. Don't let the prospect of smoke chase you off, I don't think I even get smoke of any kind from TV.

I love Bel Ami, but be forewarned that it is a spicy leather, with little to no vanilla at all. If you're dead-set on that leather/vanilla combination, then it may not be your hot ticket.

There are all kinds of orientals. They don't have to have strong spice nor be extremely sweet.

Bulgari Black - one of the greatest orientals. Has many of the characteristics you want. Dry woods/leather vanilla. Playful and "buzzing with brains".

Patchouli 24 (same perfumer). Not as plush, playful or easy to wear, but heavier on the birch tar. Excellent fragrance. Also an oriental.

Dior Homme - Excellent, and more citrusy than the other two.

Cuir Ottoman springs to mind. A soft, slightly boozy, suede-like leather with great vanilla in the dry down. It's very good stuff.

    +1's or 2's or 3's to A*Men Cuir, Knize 10.

Also try out Versace L'Homme, to me the best offering from this house, an excellent cologne, not normally discussed out here...

Also any of the Habit Rouge creations of Guerlain might be to your liking for leather + vanilla combo...

Mouchoir de Monsieur doesn't have any leather, so you can cross that one off the list. Same for Habit Rouge. And Dior Homme: very little.

I don't have a ton of knowledge on the intricacies of scent dissertation, but...I have tried a ton of samples lately. One thing I've latched onto in the last week is a combo of Tom Ford Tuscan leather and Tobacco Vanille. One spray of TL and then a spray of TV on top of it, both on the neck/collar. For whatever reason I find the two together far better than each individually. I'm really liking this combo. Sucks that you'd have to buy two different expensive scents, however they will last twice as long (maybe).

Of course, plenty of people will tell you that layering is a no-no, but I'd give it a try if you are collecting samples. Surely fits the bill for leather and vanilla.

I've heard of people mixing scents. Whatever works! But two Tom Fords is a bit much for me.

What'd you think of TV by itself? That's the one that I'm pulling for, right now.

Indeed two can be a bit pricey unless you go for splits or decants. TV by itself is strong vanilla, mild cinnamon and mild tobacco to my nose. There isn't enough tobacco for what I was looking for. That's my totally subjective opinion. Definitely try it out or get some samples before you buy.
