Default Similar? - CREED Baie de Genievre and Vetiver 1948

I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts on this personal observation I had recently.
My favorite fragrance has always been Creed Vetiver 1948. In its absence, I have come to appreciate Baie de Genievre. I think that my favoring this fragrance may stem from the common Vetiver nature of the two. Could it be any other similarity between them?

You could just be enjoying them for their uniqueness. I find Baie de Genievre to be a unique blend, with strong cinnamon and juniper aspects that aren't in 1948 Creed Vetiver. You might find similarity in the vetiver, but I didn't key on that similarity.

I love both, but the only thing I find in common between them is the ambergris signature base.

Vetiver 48 - vetiver, citrus, ginger, moss

Baie de Genievre - juniper berry, clove

both are masterpieces, IMO, but definitely have very different characters and uses...

I hope that they both never share the commonality of being extinct dinosaurs in the Creed line.

Unfortunately I fear they already are.

Quite different to me and glad I count these among others in my collection.

Vetiver 48 is already gone. impossible to find now other than private sellers.

Baie de Genievre will soon be gone... probably within a year or two.

Both wonderfull but nothing alike. I managed to snag a bottle of '48 and it's one of the pride of my collection. Why don't they make 'em like that anymore!

Good question. Why, indeed do they not make 'em like that anymore?

BdG is my SOTE. Gorgeous, longlasting stuff! So far it's the only Creed I really like, but I haven't tried many of the older ones. (Epicea is nice but has poor longevity.)

To me, the dry down of BdG is the best part of this fragrance. I am often afraid to re-apply the stuff because I don't want to disturb the great, albeit fading, residual dry down flavor with the more powerful opening notes.

Baie de Genievre has an interesting title. It translates to Juniper Bay Cinnamon Leaf. I get all three of those when I smell this, and it falls short of being a complex bay rum due to the absence of rum. Off-Scenter commented in his review that it dries down to something resembling clean hospital bandages. I definitely get this from the scent as well. Not my favorite, but a good one nonetheless. If it resembles Vetiver then I think maybe I wouldn't like Vetiver as much as I want to.

Hey MOONB Baie de Genievre just means juniper berry. I believe the West Indian Bay Tree from which the bay rum flavoring is derived is known as bay St. Thomas in French. So in this case I think baie is being using for only one of its meanings: berry, not bay.

The last batch of vetiver 48 was made in 2008, and now is almost impossible to find. I have two bottles, one I bought from Perfumerie Nasreen and the other one from a fellow basenoter. It's one of the best creed fragrances ever made and blows away every other vetiver scent on the market. Unfortunately Creed is starting to discontinue all their classics ( 48, Orange Spice, Royal Delight) just to name a few.

The reasons offered for these fragrances being discontinued are many. I am not sure I believe any of them.
