Default Jean Claude Ellena vs Francis Kurkdjian

Who do you think is a better nose?

Both can make super transparent fragrances and yet Francis can also make power bombs.

    My pick is Francis Kurkdjian.

I own one J-CE fragrance (Terre D'Hermes) and 4 made by FK, so it's FK by default for my tastes.

Both produce my two favorite fragrances, and therefor I declare it a draw. They are the absolute best of the best in my opinion however. Oh, and first post on Basenotes in almost four years!

No favorites. I'll buy what I like .
    They're equally good though.

But JCE needs to take a lone due hiatus. The line between quality and quantity is getting thinner in his case...

Isn't it fair to say the same applies to all of us? I think I could use a hiatus from work as well... Either way, it tends to be the case that once someone does several things really well, they are all the sudden in incredibly high demand and then overused.

I'm afraid I lack the qualifications to decide who is the better nose. I am a fan of both. And if anyone believes JC Ellena only does ethereal/transparent stuff, he obviously needs to get acquainted with some of Ellena's earlier work.

Well said. I'm a fan of both too but I think the comparison rather flatters FK.

Then you and JCE should take a hiatus lol.
I take 2 weeks off biannually. Doesn't completely replenish me but gives me enough boost to go on.

    They're both excellent.

As of now I'd tell you the best perfumer is Ellena. But if I wanted an expensive bespoke fragrance I'd go to Kurkdjian and have him make me the brother of Enlévement au Sérail. Hopefully he'll make it anyway, although IFRA restrictions make it less likely by the second.

    I prefer Kurkdjian's fragrances.

I am not into "minimalist/transparent fragrances". Plus I have smelled the Declaration variations too many times. Give it a rest JCE......

As artistry, I would say Ellena. I am also one of those freaks who loves to wear minimal scents (I wore Angeliques Sous la Pluie yesterday), but I can certainly understand why some would prefer wearing the fragrances of FK.

Both can submit their whole list of perfumes in FB format to me so I can test and I will deliver my verdict then. Until then I can't decide without trying and wearing it all.
But once you get locked into a serious perfume collection, the tendency is to push it as far as you can.

I used to prefer JC Ellena untill he got stuck in this minimalist/transparent limbo which was interesting at first but turned very soon into a limit IMO. Minimalism is a very dangerous territory that goes from extremely conceptual/abstract/experimental fragrances (yay!) to inoffensive and uninspired commercial deliveries simply marketed as "minimalist".

I like Kurkdjian's scents more. Or rather, find them more interesting. I'm not a learned perfumer, I don't know which one of them is a better professional - actually I even don't know if there is a measurement for this. So I'd rather say: in my books Kurkdjian is the clear winner.

+10 on that! He needs to put down the iso-e super and whatever that Declaration accord is for a while, start something in a new direction...

I'd have a hard time personally judging who the better perfumer is, but technically I think it's JCE for his expertise in synthetic aromachemicals. It's just that I'd rather my frags be mostly natural materials with synthetics used only where really needed, and JCE along with most designer perfumers are the opposite, producing primarily synthetic frags. I really enjoy TdH so there are exceptions, but not too many.

I think Celine Ellena also has a terrific nose. I think there are cases in the TDC lineup where she out-Jean-Clauded Jean-Claude.

I could not agree more! JCE is a masterful perfumer, but please JCE, do more masterful creations!!! If I want a minimal fragrance I will apply a minimal amount.

C'mon - this is urban legend that JCE is minimalistic. What about "Jardin" series? He is versatile.
