Default This Joint is jumping: the "civilized" version of Kouros.

Today, I wore Joint by Roccobarocco (1994) for the first time. The notes (from the Estonian site) are:

"Aldehydes, artemesia, basil, bergamot, coriander, caraway seed, lemon, green notes.
Carnation, cardamom, geranium, honey, jasmine, iris, rose, tobacco.
Vetiver, tonka bean, musk, leather, labdanum, civet, cedar, amber."

This is another "power fragrance" that is a bit late to the party. However, that is often good in the fragrance hobby because it means that the "mistakes" of older, similar ones have been "fixed." Here we have a Kouros-like fragrance that is much less animalic and overbearing, though the youngsters still might find it too "old." The tobacco note is clearly present, though not dominant. I think there is some patchouli in here too, though not listed at that Estonia site. It's thick/dense, but has good note separation. And as you might expect, it's strong and long-lasting. Think of 30% Kouros, 30% Ungaro II, and 40% of other strong fragrances of that period (a dash of Paco Rabannae Pour Homme, a pinch of Oscar Pour Lui, etc.). This is more for a cigarette smoker than a smoker of anything else, I'd guess (so the name may mislead some people). It's a little sweet but nothing like Santos sweetness, and it's a little dry, again relative to similar fragrances. One of the greats of its type, for sure, in terms of being able to keep the powerful notes balanced, dynaimc, and separate. One spray a few inches above the navel lasted many hours for me, with good projection ("sillage").

Our very own Surfacing got me on to this beauty. I love the honey and tobacco accord in this and it has a great presence. Masculine and powerful.

I point out my diluted Kouros when I refer to it; otherwise, it is what everyone else is conceptualizing.

Thanks for name-dropping me Koala I totally see this fragrance the way you do. Honey, tobacco, masculine and powerful. That is one heckuva opening. It certainly got my attention. Yet it didn't bother me, like Balenciaga pour Homme did.

looks like pugsley really like to create threads about how joint was like kouros that no one commented on. cool!

As I've said before, some BNers seem to like "in your face" frags, so they should go with Kouros. For those who want balance in that kind of composition, Joint seems clearly superior.

Boy, how I loved this scent and how desperately (and, so far, uselessly) tried to find it

For a "civilized" Kouros I turn to Creed Orange Spice.

I tried that one and found it to be just a bit more refined and subtle, but not nearly to the degree Joint is, and Joint has a tobacco note I like as well. No comparison, at least to me.

I could see that. It's weird but I swear there's actually more civet in Orange Spice than in Kouros. However, it recedes pretty quickly compared to the more sustained ambiance of the YSL scent.

I'll happily stick with my "uncivilized" Kourus the way it is.

I think skin chemistry is a big factor with Kouros. On me, the base never comes. It gets stuck in the opening, more or less. I could imagine those who wear Kouros often saying that an hour after application they can't smell Joint at all, for example.

I generally find civet to be most noticeable among the top notes. Perhaps the difference is Kouros keeps its animalic vibe going more from the honey, while Orange Spice has subtle ambergris instead.

Yeah it's there front and center in the top notes, and mostly in the top notes alone. It lingers a bit in much lesser density the further things go w/Orange Spice.

Kouros definitely "handles" it for a longer duration, to put it one way.

I kinda have to agree with this one. I just cannot see that much in common between Joint and Kouros. But I will certainly try Joint again.

But Orange Spice has a reputation on here to be a more refined Kouros.
