    Default Amber Madness

I've been looking for an amber scent, and there are so many good contenders that it's hard to know where to start. I thought it might be fun to do a big amber throwdown in the style of March Madness. Not sure about the logistics yet; I'm thinking people could maybe sign up to represent one of these scents that they happen to ahve in their wardrobe. We'll probably need a few samples poured, too. Here are the things I need help with:

    * Help me fill in some more amber fragrances
    * Feedback on whether the pairings make sense
    * Volunteer to represent one of the scents
    * Ideas for the logistics of each round

    Thoughts?

    Update
To participate, you should be able to represent at least one of these fragrances. That means you have a bottle and, at some point, will be willing to decant about 2ml for other participants. Please indicate in a PM which fragrance you can represent. Due to the logistical constraints of mailing things to other sniffers, I'd like to limit the first throwdown to North America. Once I've figured out how this works, we can host the next one in Europe.

My first thought is that maybe I should move all the traditional/straightforward ambers to one side and all the amber+(animalic/powder/floral/fruit/etc.) to the other side. That would make the final round a showdown between a straight amber and an amber-dominant fragrance.

I haven't tried either of those. Are they straight ambers or ambers with a little something extra? (I'm guessing Amber Muscadin is the latter.)

    Some additions:

    Neil Morris Burnt Amber
    Dr. Vranjes Ambra Iris
    Sonoma Scent Studio Ambre Noir
    Parfumerie Generale L'Ombre Fauve
    Estee Lauder Amber Ylang

All worth sampling, in my opinion.

I think you might run into a problem in that, with so many ambers, very few, if anyone, has tried them all.

I think this is a great idea. Depending on the outcome, it would be excellent to follow up with one for Tobacco...

I'm going to attempt to collect samples for anything in the competition. What I have to figure out is how to disseminate them and vote for each round. There will definitely be no voting without sniffing.

I would recommend adding Mona di Orio's sublime Les Nombres d'Or Ambre.
    Current Top Favorites:
    1) Portrait of a Lady (EdP Frédéric Malle)
    2) Giorgio for Men vintage (Giorgio Beverly Hills)
    3) Dia Man vintage edt (Amouage)
    4) Les Nombres d'Or Vetyver (Mona di Orio) - tie
    4) Lalfeorosa (O'driů) - tie

    6) Anat Fritz Original Formula and Classical (Anat Fritz)
    7) Captain vintage (Molyneux)
    8) Tzora (Anat Fritz)

I will update the diagram tonight with all of the suggestions. Are they all readily available? Do you notice any on my original diagram that are not readily available?

Also, please PM me if you can represent one or more of these scents. I will probably ask you for about 2ml of juice.

    Great idea!

I'm not a fan of ambers, nor do I own many, so I cannot help you here. I enjoyed Dior Ambre Nuit (though I prefer the more complex Mitzah, amber + patch). And some people here seem to be big fans of Ambra mediterranea by Profumi del forte (hedonist?).

    Great idea.

I'd suggest Ambre Nuit by Dior, and maybe Kiehl's Amber oil. Prada's Cuir Ambre is great, though it may be hard to find a sample.

Im a real amber hound. Heres three that are top notch:

    MDCI-Amber Topkapi
    Il Profumo-Ambre D'or
Cerchi Nell'acqua-Ambr'ero(one of the best to me)
My mom's great. I appreciate her sense of humor, patience and fondness for daytime drinking. :0)

Amber Madness sounds like a soft porn star name.

I'll second Suga's suggestion for L'Ombre Fauve but I strongly recommend you to include in your list also Ambra Mediterranea by I Profumi Del Forte which is a TERRIFIC and luxurious/lascivious concoction of amber and frankincense. Crispy and bombastic yet incredibly elegant.

a vote for amber absolute by tom ford, it lasts and projects like crazy and is great for cold winter nights, has a burned house church vibe going on. Only down side though is that its not very versatile, id use it for special occasions or for things like going to a nice restaurant etc..
