    Question A Chypre with Carnation?

I was asked this by a friend.

Is there a chypre with carnation?

I couldn't think of one at all.

So does anyone know of one?

Have you smelled the original Halston by Halston? It's got a whiff of carnations in the middle notes, but I wouldn't say it's carnation prominent. It is, of course, a very 80's scent.

Some people call En Avion a chypre, and it's very carnation-y, but it smells like more of a leather-floral to me.

Yeah! It seems like a combination that ought to have been done in some major classic, but I can't think of one.

Gucci No.1 (Guy Robert, '74) is possibly my favorite carnation-dominant fragrance ever. I've seen it classified as a floral-aldehyde more often than chypre, but it has enough earthy mossiness in the base (plus bergamot and patchouli, not so sure about labdanum) to make me think it could easily pass as a chypre (or at least an aldehydic-chypre) and there is definitely that cool, creamy and softly spicy carnation throughout - it's part of its elegant signature. It's a bit like L'Air du Temps, but pumped-up with a lot more patchouli and moss. It was discontinued a while back, but I've found new-old-stock here and there, and used bottles on eBay.

Both Miss Dior and Aromatic Elixir are chypres with carnation in them, according to some sites.
The original Calvin Klein for women and Diorella are floral chypres with carnation.

I actually think you can find carnation hiding in lots of classic chypres, but Paloma Picasso is another one with a very bold and spicy carnation presence.

Oh, the original Calvin Klein - good one, Kiliwia - and another of my all time favorites! That's another one that is often classified as a floral-aldehyde, but I think its chypre accord is quite evident, and that carnation-spiced rose is to die for! It's very hard to find, but totally worth the search.

The older En Avion has a slightly more prominent chyprť character, although I have always thought of Tabac Blond being the more obvious chyprť. Sous le Vent is supposed to contain carnation, although not perceptible to me.

    Oh, my goodness, donna.

The first Scherrer is absolutely, categorically
A carnation chypre. It's all I smell its sillage
    during its heart phase

I know tagetes are not carnations, but Vivienne Westwood
comes up on these threads and it's a good one.

This may sound odd, but the new Eau de L'Eau ( silly name, I know ) is kind of a carnation-cologne that might appeal to someone seeking a carnation chypre.

I love the idea of a carnation-prominent chypre! I don't know one, but I'll suggest trying a favorite chypre of mine, Niki de Saint Phalle. I'm particularly fond of the marigold/tagetes note in it, but it does have carnation listed and I think I do detect it. Here is one list of notes for this fragrance:

Top notes: Green notes, tagetes (marigold), Artemisia, peach, bergamot, spearmint
Heart notes: Jasmine, rose, carnation, orris, ylang-ylang, cedar, patchouli
Base notes: Oakmoss, vetiver, sandalwood, olibanum, leather, amber, musk

I will have to try some of the others mentioned in this thread!

I just got Mitsouko EdT in current reformulation, and felt a blast of clove, which is close to carnation, and to some noses might be carnation. PM me you address and I'll send you a 2ml sample.

I enjoy wearing Bandit but never got the carnation accord either. I doubt it has any perceivable carnation in it.

Ok, I've been thinking about this for days now and I've finally found it...neglected deep within my mom's collection: Fidji. The perfect carnation chypre.

There are a lot of them actually, I think carnation is pretty common in chypres. Clinique AE, Wrappings, Jean-Louis Scherrer Jean-Louis Scherrer for women, Krasnaya Moskva... I think carnation is common in chypres because it is a really characteristic, heavier floral note, almost spicy in character.

and Givenchy III. Sorry some have been mentioned already. Now if you want to smell a bomb of carnations in a chypre, smell Krasnaya Moskva, I love carnations but that for sure has an overdose of them, which is not necessarily a bad thing.

It's not technically a chypre, but Moschino is a lovely carnation scent with a chypre feel to it.

What about Santa Maria Novella Garofano (italian for carnation)? Not exactly a chypre but the strong aromatic citrus opening paired with carnation has a sort of chypre-y vibe...

Knize Forest is technically more a fougere than a chypre but the bergamot/labdanum/oakmoss combo turns it into a sort of hybrid. That being said, some people get the carnation out of it, I don't...
