'male fragrances' that women hate? Women are not all of the same opinion on fragrances! Wear what you like! The same fragrance can smell completely different on each individual.

Wait, I had it wrong. The cologne I made two guys throw out is Hugo by Hugo Boss. Sorry for the error. That thing reeks and is a plague to my nose.

You're right. What a demented and dogmatic statement! How can you even think of such a crazy thing?

Women, as everyone knows, simply can't abide:

Vintage Tabarome, Jean Patou PH, Patou pour Homme Privť, Macassar, Royal English Leather, Versailles pour Homme , Jules, or even a large bottle of Egoiste

I feel that, having wasted my life as a libertine, it is time to make amends.

    Gentlemen:

Send me any of these bottles and I will force myself to part with a bottle of THE DREAMER!

Yes! That pink potpourri which we all know is an absolute babe magnet.

Send me 4 or more of the ones I've named and I'll even throw in a bottle of *sob* Green Irish Tweed.

Please do so quickly before my resolve wavers . . .

    Pax,

Women respond to what is marketed for men at the time. Something like Derby will get a wrinkled nose from a teenaged girl.

Interestingly enough, I am not particularly suspicious of complements on my clothes, which are reasonably frequent and encouraging because I make an effort. There is something so much more intimate about smell, though. The whole issue is pretty theoretical in my case. I can only recall one complement on my smell in my entire life and that was for something entirely ordinary. I have no doubt at all it was sincere, though.

I have to admit I liked the originally worded question but have also found that generalities are pretty worthless here. I'm met women who really enjoyed the fragrance of Habit Rouge, Opium pH, Tommy, or New Haarlem on me; and can think of a couple of memorable female friends who were crazy about Drakkar Noir and Polo. On the other hand, truth be told, almost everything I've worn often enough has turned someone off.

There's only one fragrance I can think of that led to discontinuation of intercourse in the midst of the act, perhaps as the sillage became more noticeable up close. The exclamation, "You smell like an old lady!" made it clear what the problem was, fortunately an issue that was able to be remedied fairly quickly.

I do still wear that one though

    Bump

I'm honestly a bit surprised the responses in this thread. First off, everyone is well-aware that these are generalizations, we get it. Just like the compliment mega-thread. And it's not like we weren't able to make conclusions from that thread (the popular Creeds melt hearts). I feel this thread should have a bit more validity though because people find it easier to accept that there are universally disliked scents [there aren't] than universally adored scents.

Ah, Sweet Skunk! Why We Like or Dislike What We Smell
This article points out that even things that have evolved to smell bad so as to be used as a self-defence mechanism don't even smell bad to everyone.

That being said we could easily start to list off smells almost no one likes: skunks, piss, dried sweat, old people, decaying corpses, Hugo by Hugo Boss, rotting garbage, etc etc... While there are technically no universally disliked scents, there are DEFINITELY notes that an enormous percentage of people find repelling, which is the subject of this thread. Perhaps a fairer way to frame this would have been "most polarizing scents". That is, an Aqua Di Gio is going to smell appealing to 90% of people but not unique, whereas a Kinski may bother 85% of women but get the last 15% inexplicably bothered.

I haven't had personal experience with this but I really expected to read responses like:
    - Synthetic oud
    - Vanilla (often found sickeningly sweet and cheap)
    - Florals (too feminine)
    - Comically gourmand (i.e. if you smell exactly like a pretzel it's not sexy)
    - Avante-guarde

The scent I expected to fall into this category for me personally was Tom Ford Extreme since it's more complex and manly than anything else at Sephora and it would follow OP's original theory of "man's club" scents being more liked by men than their mates. Except everyone loves it on me. Chalk it up to my immaculate personality and other-wordly self-confidence.

...BUT annoyingly throwing a wrench in this theory is Kolnisch Juchten by Parfums Regence. No one finds this appealing on me. No one explicitly said "I don't like this" but I'm used to getting "You smell amazing and great and perfect" instead of "meh". And I did buy it because it's a crazy scent, super manly, leathery, smells like nothing else (described as "high-calorie" hahah), so I wanted it to be a challenge: I expected most women to not dig it but the ones that did, I wouldn't even need a personality anymore to sleep with them. Unfortunately what ended up happening is that the scent smells completely different on me than it does on a tester. So I'm not actually smelling like the scent I bought; roll of the die that my skin & body chemistry morph it into something else. I think it's enough to add it to the thread tally, though.

just basing this on what my wife says....i dont think she really hates any...but she definitely isnt a big fan of real oud oils. just too stinky for her. she even dislikes when i burn agarwood in my incense burner, even though that is much more subtle. and also certain rose fragrances, she says makes me smell like an old lady.

Interesting replies and darned interesting to me, here is why...Strange story but Iím 55 years old and I wouldnít know if a woman likes or hates my fragrances. I have about 110, I have never received a compliment or a complaint my entire life. I do know that TDH edt makes people cough when I first apply it. Iím an introvert and very unapproachable. When woman see me they turn the other way. Not because Iím ugly, I just have an aura that says leave me alone. So itís easy for me to explain why I hear nothing, Iím not worth their time and Iím ok with it, besides that I have been married forever to my hot wife. She has never hated my frags but she is not crazy about barbershop frags.

Meanwhile thanks for the entertaining thread

If a girl is really in to you and you have some swagger, they'll be more receptive to a lot more fragrances.

But if you're average looking I've noticed that Dior Fahrenheit, Polo and Drakkar Noir are one's they claim to really dislike. Pretty much anything that's either old school, or thick and heavy. The more animalic, the more likely they'll think you stink.
I can't think of any relatively modern ones that have gotten bad results.
